China’s film industry is the second largest in the world behind Hollywood – although home grown productions tend to struggle both in the domestic and global marketplace. In the first week of release, “Battle of Memories” took almost $22,000,000 at the box office, opening just behind the Hong Kong/China co-production “Shock Wave” (directed by Herman Yau) and “The Fate of the Furious 8” (directed by F. Gary Gray). “Battle of the Memories” is one of the few Chinese fiction science fiction thriller films produced in a market traditionally dominated by historical epics and big-budget fantasies. More remarkable is the fact that Chen dispenses with traditional fantasy conventions and instead combines Asian noir with a largely realist aesthetic in a philosophical mediation on trauma, memory and murder.

Trading in Wanda Film Holding Co was halted on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange last July with plans afoot “to acquire film-related assets,” the company said at the time. Now, Wanda is getting in gear. On Monday, Wanda Film, which is part of Wang Jianlin’s recently embattled Dalian Wanda Group and holds the conglomerate’s Chinese exhibition business, said it intends to purchase 96.83% of Wanda Media (alternately referred to as Wanda Television Media) which is the film production and distribution unit. The transaction price was listed at Rmb 11.62B ($1.77B).
In a Chinese regulatory filing, Wanda Film says its core business will be expanded to investment, production and distribution of movies and TV dramas, as well as the distribution and operation of online games and video IP and interactive platforms. The unit already includes Wanda’s 516 directly-operated cinemas with nearly 4,600 screens.
The Wanda-owned Legendary and AMC Entertainment are not part of the current proposal.

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.
With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.
Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

Huang Bo takes the lead role in Battle Of Memories, the latest effort from The Great Hypnotist director Leste Chen and the result appears to be something unusual for mainland China - a slick scifi thriller in a nation where local censorship and content laws make science fiction a generally tricky proposition. With a starting point similar to Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, Battle Of Memories revolves around a famous novelist who opts to cope with his recent divorce by having a decade of his memory wiped. But when he has second thoughts and tries to recover those lost memories he instead finds himself in the mind of a serial killer. Production values here are fantastic - which should be no surprise as backers...
