The title of Girish Kasaravalli's 1977 film "Ghatashraddha" is directly translated as "The Ritual," although the on-screen English title is "Ritual of Excommunication." Both titles reflect the bleak circumstances of the film's protagonist, even though "The Ritual" implies that women are abused and discarded as a matter of course. "Ghatashraddha" is a bleak tragedy about a woman named Yamuna (Meena Kuttappa) who lives with her religious schoolteacher father (Ramaswamy Iyengar) and who is already a widow at a young age. Yamuna is already seeing another man, also a schoolteacher, although their affair is secret ... as is her pregnancy. The only person who treats Yamuna with any friendliness is a young boy named Naani (Ajith Kumar), who serves as a witness to the story.
When her father goes out of town to raise money for his school, everything falls apart. The school deteriorates, gossip begins to spread, and Yamuna becomes an outcast.

Between apocalyptic disaster films and cosmic terrors à la Lovecraft, the horror genre has the theoretical end of humanity pretty well covered. But what about its beginning?
In Andrew Cumming’s magnificent directorial debut “Out of Darkness,” the filmmaker reverses at full speed into the unknown with an imaginative and gruesome wilderness thriller tracking a group of nomads living 45,000 years ago. Part prehistoric “Prey,” part agnostic spin on The Book of Genesis, the film was written by Ruth Greenberg, and premiered under the more sci-fi sounding title “The Origin” at the BFI Film Festival in 2022. The moniker change is just the latest in a line of nuanced creative decisions that makes this ferocious 87-minute monster movie a testament to meticulous storytelling: a scrupulous feat made even more effective by the film’s use of Stone Age brutality and stark narrative simplicity.

Andrew Baird’s occult film, Sunrise, revolves around an immigrant family’s struggle for survival in America. The family’s savior, Falcon, holds a terrible grudge against the tormentor and makes him pay for his misdeeds. The macabre nature of the film can be compared to occult films like The Ritual and Apostle. The cast of the movie includes Guy Pearce and Alex Pettyfer. What is the concept of The Red Coat? Will Fallon be able to teach Reynolds a good lesson? Will Mrs. Loi and her children attain justice? Let’s find out!
Spoilers Ahead
What Happened To The Loi Family?
Reynolds, a staunch nationalist American, has been portrayed as extremely racist and is seen getting into a conflict with a peasant, Mr. Loi. Reynolds told Mr. Loi (a mongoloid) that since he was not the same race as him, he did not have a right to own land in America.

David Bruckner – who previously remade Hellraiser – is to write and direct a new take on The Blob for Warner Bros.

As first reported by The Wrap, the remake will be written and directed by David Bruckner, who previously made the 2022 remake of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser and, among other things, The Night House (2020) and The Ritual (2017).
Like Hellraiser and The Night House, the new Blob will be produced by David S Goyer and Keith Levine via their company, Phantom Four Productions. The Wrap notes in their exclusive report tonight, “Plot details about the reimagining are being kept under wraps. The original 1958 The Blob tells the story of an amorphous alien lifeform that descends upon a rural Pennsylvania town and begins consuming anyone it comes into contact with. According to The Wrap, David Bruckner has signed on to write and direct a remake of The Blob for Warner Bros. Discovery.
The original 1958 movie starred a young Steve McQueen, in his first leading role, and revolved around a carnivorous amoeboidal alien that crashed in a small Pennsylvania town and began consuming everyone and everything in its path. Plot details for this latest remake of The Blob remain under wraps, but… I’m sure you can use your imagination.
The original film was followed by a 1972 sequel, Beware! The Blob, directed by Larry Hagman of all people. Chuck Russell directed the first remake of The Blob in 1988, which featured much more gruesome effects. Although it was a box office failure at the time, the film has developed a strong following.

“Familiar” is one of those descriptors critics can twist into a positive or negative connotation. William Brent Bell’s folkloric Lord of Misrule basks in culty Pagan familiarity but not as cheap mimicry. If you’ve seen The Wicker Man, The Ritual, Kill List — I’ll spare you thirty more titles — you won’t be stricken dumbstruck by writer Tom de Ville’s ode to harvest rituals and wretched traditions. Bell’s not rewriting the book on insidious celebrations beneath all the synchronized dances and laughter, and yet, Lord of Misrule is an undeniably atmospheric venture into villages of the damned.

A classic film that not only endures but continues to inspire half a century later is a true marvel. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, The Wicker Man helped popularize the folk horror genre that continues to flourish with the likes of Midsommar, The Witch, and The Ritual. Its impact extends beyond cinema, from inspiring Radiohead (“Burn the Witch”) and Iron Maiden (“The Wicker Man”) songs to being included in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony.
In the film, Sergeant Neil Howie travels from the mainland to the Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The devout Christian is appalled to learn that the islanders practice a form of paganism characterized by blasphemous beliefs, degeneracy, doublespeak, and peculiar customs. Like The Bride of Frankenstein, the namesake doesn’t show up until the final moments of the film, but it leaves an indelible impression long after the credits roll.

The Cloverfield franchise may have been dormant for the past few years, but like the titular creature, it will rise again when you least expect it. That’s the fun of this sci-fi horror franchise, which first made its name as a viral hit in 2008 before expanding into a larger universe of stories involving aliens and alternate dimensions. You never know when a new installment might drop.
Such is the case with Cloverfield 4, which, as is tradition in this series, is shrouded in mystery. What we know for sure is that it’s being penned by British screenwriter Joe Barton and will be directed by Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow). Unlike the other sequels, 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, which began life as completely unrelated standalone scripts before being rewritten and integrated into the Cloverfield franchise, Cloverfield 4 is being developed specifically for the franchise.

“The iconic found footage series returns with an array of explosive, bloody scares set in a decade obsessed with serial killers and the Satanic Panic,” writes Fantastic Fest of the film which says goodbye to the nostalgic neon lights and hello to the grit and grime of the ’80s.
V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.

Ghostface takes Manhattan in Scream VI, the latest installment in the slasher franchise. The home video release includes an informative audio commentary with directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, and executive producer Chad Villella.
Here are 12 things I learned from the Scream VI Blu-ray commentary…
1. Samara Weaving was the first and only choice for the opening scene.
Samara Weaving, who starred in Radio Silence’s Ready or Not, was the first and only choice to play Laura, the ill-fated film studies professor that serves as the opening kill. The actress has stated it’s the closest character to herself she’s ever played.
Gillett says, “We were walking to dinner in Montreal when we were like, ‘Let’s just call her and see if she’s game.'” They did so, and “she was super, super game to come and hang out with us for a few days.

“The English” is hoping for a successful Emmys season coming up, with the show on the precipice for a Best Limited Series bid as well as a Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor nomination for Chaske Spencer, while Emily Blunt is odds-on to be cited in the lead actress category. But they may be joined by the ever-reliable supporting player Rafe Spall, who emerged from Amazon Prime Video’s sweeping western series as one of the best things about it — if not the best.
“The English,” by creator Hugo Blick, follows Blunt as Lady Cornelia Locke, who is on the hunt for revenge in a search for the man responsible for her son’s death. Along the way, she meets Spencer’s Eli Whipp/Wounded Wolf, who is on a quest of his own — to claim back the land he is owed for his service in the US Army. The...

It's been five years since a "Cloverfield" movie has graced our screens, but that appears to be changing now that a relic of the past from when the franchise first launched has resurfaced. As fans of the J.J. Abrams-produced monster movie franchise are no doubt well aware, secrecy and viral marketing have been a gimmick big part of the franchise since the very beginning. Now, a bit of viral marketing tied to the original 2008 blockbuster that started it all has us thinking that a sequel is imminent.
The Slusho website is once again active after being offline for some time. In 2007, well ahead of the release of "Cloverfield," a website for the fictional drink appeared and included an interactive game, though nothing directly connected to the movie. A young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites, a group of sadistic supernatural beings from another dimension.
Ever since first seeing The Ritual back in 2017, it’s been crystal clear to me that filmmaker David Bruckner is one of the best of our time. His horror films are legitimately terrifying and manage to tackle themes such as grief, loss, and trauma in shockingly powerful ways. My favourite film of 2021 was The Night House, directed by Bruckner masterfully. On the surface, it’s essentially a creepy movie about a woman who may or may not be dealing with some paranormal, otherworldly stuff in her complexly designed house, but underneath it all, it’s really a...

A few of last year’s most notable horror movies are still without physical media releases, and that’s because they ended up being streaming exclusives. That list includes Netflix’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hulu’s Prey, along with Hulu and David Bruckner‘s Hellraiser.

The UK DVD release of Hellraiser (2022) arrives on March 27, 2023. As always, you’ll be able to watch the disc here in the States but you’ll need a Region Free DVD player first.

South Korea’s Climax Studios, behind recent Netflix genre hits Jung_E and “Hellbound,” is teaming up with Andy Serkis to develop a creature feature, The Monster Tale.
The Monster Tale will be written and directed by Jason Kim, who is behind South Korean possession horror The Divine Fury (pictured above) and the upcoming series “Bloodhounds.” Deadline reports that Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish will executive produce through Imaginarium Productions.
The upcoming feature “brings together a warring group of three infamous East Asian monsters, an unlikely team of enemies who must unite to defeat a menacing invasion by a monster from across the seas in Europe.”
“Bringing brilliant, flawed, and complex characters to the screen is at the heart of what we do at the Imaginarium, and we cannot wait to work with Climax Studio and their talented team to develop this wild roller-coaster ride of a story — it’s going...

A stroll past the credits of filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield delivers an assortment of monsters, disasters, and delights. He's taken on the producer role in projects like "Dinosaur Hotel" (which he also wrote) and "Croc!," and has recently set his sights on your childhood faves.
His directorial debut this year puts an A.A. Milne creation in the spotlight, though not in the way you might imagine. "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" takes the beloved big-bellied bear of Milne's stories and, with the help of Pooh entering the public domain, re-imagines him and the plucky Piglet as feral beasts who launch a campaign of terror when an adult Christopher Robin returns to the Hundred Acre Wood. If you're looking for the rest of the Hundred Acre gang like Eeyore, Rabbit, Kanga and little Roo, or Owl, you won't find them; Pooh and Piglet devoured them alive, and a house full of...

For many movie fans who watched "Bambi" at a tender age, the Disney movie may seem as horrifying as it is cute. After all, before the sweet yearling at the heart of the classic 1942 film has a chance to so much as finish gulping down his first taste of spring grass, his mother is shot by hunters. Bambi's mother's death may be mild by adult standards, but for a kid, it's a harrowing introduction to the world of Disney. But at least in the world of Walt Disney, Bambi has a happy ending. The same can't be promised for "Bambi: The Reckoning," an upcoming horror film that Bloody Disgusting reports is in the works from the director of "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey."

The viral success of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, coming to theaters on February 15, 2023, has led director Rhys Frake-Waterfield down a path of putting his own horror movie twist on other iconic children’s properties that have slipped into the public domain, with Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare currently in the works for a future release from his team.
And that’s not all, as Dread Central has scored the exclusive word that Rhys Frake-Waterfield is also planning a Bambi horror movie that’s currently titled Bambi: The Reckoning.
From ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions, Bambi: The Reckoning is set to be directed by Scott Jeffrey with Frake-Waterfield producing the “dark retelling” of the classic tale.
Jeffrey tells Dread, “The film will be an incredibly dark retelling of the 1928 story we all know and love. Finding inspiration from the design used in Netflix’s The Ritual, Bambi will be...

Rhys Frake-Waterfield is on a streak of taking public domain children’s book characters that have previously been given the Disney treatment and turning them into something terrifying. His movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey is set to receive a U.S. theatrical release through Fathom Events on February 15th, he’s developing a horror twist on Peter Pan that will be called Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare, there’s a chance of a Blood and Honey sequel, and now the folks at Dread Central have broken the news that Frake-Waterfield will also be producing a horror movie inspired by Felix Salten’s 1923 novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods. The horror take on Bambi is called Bambi: The Reckoning.
Coming to us from ITN Studios and Jagged Edge Productions, Bambi: The Reckoning is set to begin filming in January with Scott Jeffrey (The Curse of Humpty Dumpty) at the helm.

I've heard of just about every kind of killer animal movie in my time, from hordes of ravenous rats to the mutton monsters of "Black Sheep," but a killer deer is a new one. According to Dread Central, the team behind the demented "Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" are tackling the beloved story of "Bambi," but with their signature sickening twist. ITN Studios and Jagged Eye Productions will be making "Bambi: The Reckoning," giving the story of the fawn who loses his mother a horror update.
"Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey" saw Winnie the Pooh and Piglet going feral and turning into murderous beasts because Christopher Robin forgot to feed them when he went off to college, so just about anything is possible with the team's Bambi retelling. There's a revenge story baked into the movie already with Bambi's poor dead mom, so it wouldn't be a huge...
