Set over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.
In one scene, Halley and her daughter are watching a TV show in their room. This show is "Greg the Bunny," a show which writer and director Sean Baker co-created.
It's only the second week of summer and there's already been a dead fish in the pool.
Moonee: We were performing a science experiment: we were trying to get it back alive.
Jancey and Moonee run off to Walt Disney World at the end of the film; yet the circumstances are extremely unlikely. They would have to run about 5 miles, down major highways and across interstates, to get to a Disney hotel or Downtown Disney, then use the bus system to get to the Magic Kingdom, then sneak inside somehow without paying. The ending is far too impractical, if nothing else, to be taken literally.
