The Writers Lab launched in 2015 and is the only lab in the world devoted exclusively to script development for women writers over the age of 40. It creates a springboard to the next stage of production and expands the boundaries of today’s commercial narrative film. Many past participants have seen their scripts optioned and/or are actively working in writers’ rooms.
The program, which is presented in collaboration with the Writers Guild of America, East, is supported by Oscar-winning actresses and Big Little Lies stars Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman.

On Sunday’s “American Idol,” two of the Top 5 contestants were eliminated: Laci Kaye Booth and Wade Cota. Although they performed at the top of their game, in the end their three rival finalists got more of America’s votes. That leading trio of vote-getters as revealed by Ryan Seacrest are: Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg. (Vote in our ‘American Idol’ winner poll.)
This result meant that Laci and Wade fell just short of making the Top 3. We asked you which of these two talents to be sent home was robbed of a place in the finale next Sunday (May 19). By a margin of 56% to 44% “(as of this writing), “American Idol” viewers favor Wade over Laci.
Wade, a 27-year-old musician from Phoenix, had never been in the bottom 2 before. Conversely, Laci — a 23-year-old college student from Livingston TX — only made it to the semi-final after she inspired Luke Bryan,...

The May 12 episode of “American Idol” showcased the Top 5. Each of the finalists sang three songs: one in honor of Mother’s Day, another chosen by mentor Bobby Bones, and a third from the Elton John back catalog. As with the last three Sunday shows, this episode aired live nationwide. America got to vote for their favorites in real-time, with the results revealed by host Ryan Seacrest at the end of the episode.
The top three vote-getters — Alejandro Aranda, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg — will contend in the final next week. And the bottom two — Laci Kaye Booth and Wade Cota — were bounced from the competition.

In advance of the final five taking to stage on Sunday’s live “American Idol,” we wanted to know who viewers were backing to win season 17. Alejandro Aranda garnered a whopping 40% support in our poll. Laine Hardy, his closest rival more ways than one, is next with 31%. They lead out power rankings from best to worst and are all but certain to number among the Top 3 revealed by Ryan Seacrest at the end of the show on May 12.
Of the other three contestants, Wade Cota looks the likeliest to round out the roster of finalists. He has 15% of the total tally. The two women still standing — Laci Kaye Booth and Madison Vandenburg — did not break into double digits with 6% and 8% of the vote by “American Idol” fans respectively.

Laci Kaye Booth is almost certain to face elimination on “American Idol” this Sunday according to the results of our poll of viewers. She only made the final five on last Sunday’s episode when Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie decided to use their one judges save of the season to keep her in the competition. But she has earned only a measly 6% in our survey of “American Idol” fans heading into the Top 5 show on May 12.
The other contestant joining her in the bottom two is likely to be Madison VanDenburg who merited a mere 8% in our poll results. All five singers still in the competition will take to the stage on Sunday to perform a trio of tunes. Each will sing a song from the Elton John catalog, another picked out by mentor Bobby Bones and a third in honor of Mother’s Day.

After the results of the public vote were revealed by Ryan Seacrest, the five contestants still standing are: Alejandro Aranda, Laci Kaye Booth, Wade Cota, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg.

On the May 5 episode of “American Idol,” the Top 6 sang two songs each: one that was inspirational and the other from the summer of 1969 in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. Four of the half dozen contestants made it through based on their votes from the public: Alejandro Aranda, Wade Cota, Laine Hardy and Madison VanDenburg. A fifth, Laci Kaye Booth, got the judges save while the other artist in the bottom two, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon, was eliminated.
We asked for your predictions as to which of these remaining five finalists will go all the way to win season 17. “Idol” fans are divided between two of the artists: Alejandro Aranda has 41% of the viewers vote as of this writing and Laine Hardy is at 30%. While Alejandro is about where he was last week (40%), Laine has added five points to his total. Much of that support comes from fans of Jeremiah.

“American Idol” ended Sunday’s live episode with a shocker after Ryan Seacrest revealed the last of the four artists from the Top 6 to make the cut. On May 5, the “American Idol” Top 6 will sing two songs apiece: one will be inspirational (as chosen by Grammy-winning Christian singer Lauren Daigle) while the other will date back to the summer of 1969 in honor of the 5oth anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. At the end of the live two-hour show, Ryan Seacrest will reveal the four artists to make it through based on the public vote.
“Idol” fans still give the edge to Alejandro Aranda to win season 17. His audition video went viral and he continues to lead our viewers poll as he has all season long. Sunday’s “American Idol” episode showcases the Top 6 who will sing two songs each: one that is inspirational and the other from 50 years ago. If the viewers vote along the lines of their responses to our recent survey, it will be the end of the road for the two remaining women in the competition: Laci Kaye Booth and be Madison VanDenburg. They earned a mere 6% and 8% respectively in our poll.
Two of the four fellows still standing also look like they could be in trouble: Wade Cota has just 12% of the vote count while Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon sits at just 10%. Adding together the support for these four contestants comes to 36% of the total.
That sum is easily eclipsed by Alejandro Aranda, who has registered an impressive 38%. His closest competition, Laine Hardy, has risen to 26% of the vote to date.

“People think that I’m faking my big, raspy voice ’cause that’s not how I talk,” Wade Cota said during Sunday’s Top 14 performance episode about all of the “American Idol” haters who’ve been questioning his voice throughout Season 17 of ABC’s reality TV show. “[Since] I just sang metal through puberty, I wrecked my actual voice,” he explained before adding, “If I had never sang metal music I don’t think my voice would sound the way that it does today, so I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Watch his latest performance of “Trouble” above.

Stories of sibling rivalry can be as trite as romantic comedies. They feud; there’s a backstory; they love each other again. But even though writer-director Theresa Rebeck’s “Trouble” follows this predictable path, it’s charming enough to make you forgive the familiarity.
That’s due in large part to its leads: Anjelica Huston (playing against type in a cowboy hat) and Bill Pullman are Maggie and Ben, a sister and brother whose paths cross when Ben shows up on Maggie’s rural property with a backhoe. But it’s his property, he insists. Some mutual friends show up mid-scuffle; Maggie rustles up the sheriff. Nothing much comes of it, but Maggie’s shooed away to give Ben a chance to show the sheriff the papers he insists he has.
Indeed, he does have papers that show the property is his. His argument is that their father left them both the land,...

"She's a piece of work." Paladin has released the official trailer for an indie dramedy titled Trouble, the second feature film from Pulitzer Prize-nominated playwright and novelist Theresa Rebeck (her first film was Poor Behavior in 2016). The film is about two middle-aged siblings who don't care for one another - played by Anjelica Huston and Bill Pullman. Ben returns home in hopes of getting back his father's estate to build a house there, but runs into the hard-headed Maggie, his sister who won't let him have any of it back. The cast includes David Morse, Julia Stiles, Brian d'Arcy James, Jim Parrack, and Victor Williams. This looks a bit wild, with some brutally honest take from both sides. Might be worth a watch? Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Theresa Rebeck's Trouble, direct from YouTube: Maggie (Anjelica Huston) and Ben (Bill Pullman) are middle-aged siblings who don't care for one another.

Tuesday night on “The Voice,” rock singer Britton Buchanan from Team Alicia Keys narrowly escaped elimination after being forced to sing for America’s instant save along with Pryor Baird and Kaleb Lee. Britton picked Calum Scott‘s “Dancing on My Own” as his instant save song — a great choice as it earned enough live votes to send him through to the season finale, thereby eliminating both Pryor and Kaleb. Britton now joins Brynn Cartelli (Team Kelly Clarkson), and Kyla Jade and Spensha Baker (Team Blake Shelton) as the Final 4 artists on “The Voice” Season 14. Britton Buchanan is one of the front-runners to win season 14 of “The Voice.” This student from Sanford, North Carolina just turned 18. Which of these has been your favorite so far? Vote in our poll below and then sound off in our comments section with your thoughts on this edition of “The Voice.”
Do you think that Buchanan was best with the tune he performed on the May 7 episode: “What’s Love Got to Do with It” by Tina Turner. Alicia Keys heads into the knockout round on season 14 of “The Voice” with the strongest team of the four coaches. That is not surprising given that she also had the best team before the battles began as her 12 artists had a whopping 29 chair turns during the blind auditions. At the end of the battle round, she had cut that roster in half and added two steals.
These eight artists merited 22 chair turns between them. Compare that to the rosters of the other coaches: six-time champ Blake Shelton (19 turns); rookie Kelly Clarkson (17 turns) and three-time winner Adam Levine (13 turns).
Keys pitted up her original 12 artists against each other in six battles. The winners of these — Johnny Bliss, Britton Buchanan, Sharane Callister, Terrence Cunningham, Christiana Danielle and Kelsea Johnson — move on to the knockout round. Alicia Keys returned as a coach on season 14 of “The Voice” fresh from a win. In her second stint as a mentor, she propelled Chris Blue to victory last spring. One of the keys to her success was choosing the right artists at each stage of the competition. This season’s battle rounds begin on March 19 and Keys must choose which six contestants on her team to take through to the next round, the knockouts. To assist her in making these tough decisions, Keys has brought in teen heartthrob Shawn Mendes as an advisor. He certainly understands the pressures facing these would-be stars.
