Sydney Sweeney‘s second film of 2024 is finally here, let’s hope that it doesn’t turn into a disaster like the first one. Produced by Sweeney herself, Immaculate is a psychological horror film and it follows the story of a young nun who joins a convent in the Italian countryside. Her quiet life quickly turns into a nightmare because of the horrific secrets hidden in the convent. Directed by Michael Mohan, Immaculate also stars Simona Tabasco, Benedetta Porcaroli, and Álvaro Morte. So, if you loved Sweeney’s horror film here are some similar movies you should check out next.
The Convent
Co-written and directed by Paul Hyett, the 2018 film British horror film titled The Convent gives a similar atmosphere to Sweeney’s Immaculate. The Convent tells us the story of a group of young women seeking refuge from the turmoil of World War II in an isolated convent in the countryside.

Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.
In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

[Editor’s note: This story was originally published September 2023. It has since been updated ahead of the release of “Immaculate.”]
In the real world, nuns typically lead simple, quiet lives. Taking vows of chastity and obedience in order to fully devote themselves to God, the average nun — be she Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, or some other denomination — gives up her worldly possessions in exchange for the pursuit of greater spiritual purpose, often spending her life in a monastery or convent and focusing on prayer, charity, and schooling. For some, that’s a fulfilling path, but it’s also maybe not the most interesting story to watch.
And yet onscreen, nuns can be whatever the director wants them to be. They can be the singing, lovable anti-Nazis in “The Sound of Music.” They can be the bawdy and hilarious R&b superstars in “Sister Act.” In some films, like Paul Verhoeven’s “Benedetta,” they spit in the face of those vows of chastity to engage in some sacrilegiously steamy antics.

When the March box office seems to be tailing off after a weaker weekend, who you gonna call? Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview to find out.
For the third weekend this month, we have the potential for a movie to open with more than $40 million after literally months without one. That new movie is Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” the sequel to the Jason Reitman-directed “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which helped revive the franchise in 2021 with what is now lovingly referred to as a “requel,” i.e. a combo of a reboot and a sequel.
“Frozen Empire” brings back the newest Ghostbusters, played by Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenzie Grace, and other characters from “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” as well as the OGs (Original Ghostbusters): Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and even Annie Potts. Sydney Sweeney has become a recognizable presence on television, garnering acclaim for her outstanding portrayal of Cassie Howard in the popular HBO series Euphoria. Her remarkable performance in the show even earned her an Emmy nomination.

With that said, Sydney Sweeney has clearly branched out and become a huge star in the world of Hollywood, as she has acted in films such as Anyone But You, which turned out to be a Box Office Hit. However, her latest film Immaculate doesn’t live up to its name as it has far too many plot holes.

In director Michael Mohan’s Immaculate, evil lies not in the efforts of Satan and his demons but solely within the hearts of the men running a convent in the Italian countryside and, to a lesser degree, the women who answer directly to them. In the opening scene, we witness a terrified young nun (Simona Tabasco) desperately trying to escape the convent, only to be hunted down and restrained by a creepy quartet of red-masked nuns. From this point on, it’s abundantly clear that something is off at Our Lady of Sorrows, even if it takes a young American nun, Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney), who’s freshly arrived at the convent, quite a while to figure out that serious trouble is brewing in this little corner of paradise.
While Cecilia arrives in Italy as a doe-eyed innocent, even she’s all too aware of the Catholic Church’s recent scandals,...

Some good news, ladies and gents – it appears as though the long-shelved big-screen adaption of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) won’t be deleted after all. Variety just broke the news that New Line and Warner Bros will put the movie out on its Max streaming service this year. While this was widely anticipated, in recent months, the buzz had turned pretty dark, with it heavily rumored that WB would be taking a loss on the film and deleting it, which is what they did with Batgirl. The Looney Tunes/live-action mash-up Coyote vs Acme seems to be going that way as well (unless John Cena’s comic performance at the Oscar swayed anyone).
This is the third adaptation of Salem’s Lot. The previous two were both mini-series, which aired in 1979 and 2004. This new take on the concept is said to be set...

Recently, the buzz around Hollywood is that WB/ Discovery is getting ready to take a massive $115 million write-down in content. Coyote vs Acme seems all but certain to be deleted, but apparently that’s not the only piece of content the company may be on the verge of scrapping. Indeed, the long-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot has been in limbo for a long time now, and many fans are wondering when (or if) the axe is going to fall.
How did we get here?
In September of 2021, writer/director Gary Dauberman went into production on a new adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here), which has previously been brought to the screen as two separate three hour mini-series; once in 1979, and again in 2004. In the early days of January, Universal Pictures closed the first major Hollywood deal of 2024 by pre-emptively purchasing the short story package Long Lost, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners producing alongside Simon Kinberg and Audrey Chon of Genre Pictures, as well as Scott Glassgold of Ground Control Entertainment. Max Lippe will continue as the company’s director of development.
Maniscalco joins the company as it begins what looks to be a busy run across the horror landscape. The genre remains one of the few that have not only weathered but thrived in the harsh theatrical conditions of recent years. Dauberman late last year signed a first-look deal with Screen Gems/Sony Pictures. Back in June of 2021, it was announced that Julian Sands, best known around here for playing the Warlock in the 1989 horror film fittingly titled Warlock and then coming back for the sequel Warlock: The Armageddon, had signed on to star in a new genre project called The Piper, which puts a horrific twist on the legend of the Pied Piper. Sadly, it was only seven months later that we heard Sands had gone missing while hiking on California’s Mount Baldy. Six months later, his body was found. He did get to work on The Piper before he passed away, though, and the film is now ready to make its way out into the world. It’s set to receive a theatrical and digital/on demand release on March 8th, and with that date exactly one month away a trailer has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.

‘Camp Pleasant Lake:’ Slasher Pic Starring ‘Jerry Maguire’ Actor Jonathan Lipnicki Lands Distributor
Exclusive: DeskPop Entertainment has acquired filmmaker Thomas Walton’s 1980s-inspired slasher Camp Pleasant Lake. DeskPop has set the pic for a release in select theaters and VOD on February 27.
Written and directed by Walton, Camp Pleasant Lake follows Rick and Darlene Rutherford, who attempt to breathe life into the eerie remnants of an old campsite, unaware of its dark past. Strange occurrences haunt the area, mirroring the tragedies of the old camp, where two decades earlier, a young girl was kidnapped and her parents brutally murdered. Amidst chilling atmospheres and long-forgotten secrets, the couple grapples with a horrifying revelation—they are entwined in the camp’s history. And as the shadows of the past collide with the present, the Rutherfords must confront the haunting histories of a sinister crime.
Camp Pleasant Lake stars Lipnicki alongside Bonnie Aarons, Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster 1/2), Michael Paré, Kelly Lynn Reiter, Robert Lasardo (Death Race), Maritza Brikisak, and Greg Tally. Jared Safier produces the film alongside Walton, with Jeremy Hirsch, Matthew Macur, Damien Douglas, Lenny Vitulli, Jackson Everest, and Michael Mahal as its executive producers. Production companies on the picture are Safier Entertainment, PhilaDreams Films, Lux Angeles Studios, Stag Mountain Films, Rmr Productions, and Movies By Misfits.
“Collaborating with the DeskPop team to release Camp Pleasant Lake has been a pleasure. We’ve crafted an intense, frightening, and entertaining experience, and we’re excited for horror enthusiasts to come together in cinemas and VOD and relish the twists and turns we’ve brought to life,” said Walton.
The deal was negotiated between Mat Levy for DeskPop Entertainment and Jared Safier and Thomas Walton of Safier Entertainment.

What are the highest grossing horror movies of all time? More specifically, what are the highest grossing horror franchises of all time? On the list of the Top 20, only Five franchises in the history of the genre have crossed the $1 billion mark. Can you guess which ones?
Franchises including The Purge, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination, The Exorcist, Insidious and Halloween are some of the biggest of all time, but even they haven’t yet been able to crack that massive billion dollar milestone. Other franchises including Paranormal Activity and Scream come even closer, but haven’t yet crossed over into the billions.
The only horror franchises to hit $1 billion, you ask?
With 10 films under its belt – and an eleventh on the way soon – the Saw franchise officially shattered the $1 billion milestone with the release of Saw X last year. The return of Jigsaw and Amanda drove the...

The 2015 survival horror Until Dawn is the latest in a glut of videogame to film adaptations. It’ll be directed by the chap who did Shazam!
All arguments about its merits as a film aside, the huge commercial success of Universal’s Five Nights At Freddy’s seems to have formed the blueprint for IP-hungry studios in a world where endless sequels and superhero films are no longer a sure thing.
Following a year where conventional Hollywood ‘wisdom’ was turned on its head, the conversation continues as to what will be the next sure-fire money maker for studios: movies about toys or products? Projects based on video games? Maybe even original stories containing bold ideas made by talented filmmakers?
Naturally, we’re all hoping for the latter but of course, studios are keen to cover all of their bases, and in the wake of Five Nights At Freddy’s huge...

Nick Frost has entered the Viking village.
Frost, perhaps best known for his starring turns in Edgar Wright movies such as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, has joined the cast of Universal Pictures’ live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.
Dean DeBlois, who co-wrote and directed the original and revered trilogy, is steering the new feature, returning as writer, director and producer.
The project already has Mason Thames (The Black Phone) and Nico Parker (The Last of Us) set to star as Hiccup and Astrid, the young teens who befriend dragons. Gerard Butler, who voiced Stoick the Vast, the leader of the Viking clan and Hiccup’s father, is reprising his role in the flesh.

Stars: Julian Sands, Charlotte Hope, Aoibhe O’Flanagan, Pippa Winslow, Philipp Christopher | Written and Directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen
What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see the one written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

North America Box Office: Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan Becomes The Only Indian Film Beating Even Oppenheimer To Get #1 Movie Tag In 2023… ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
It looks like it’s Shah Rukh Khan’s box office day today because just after writing about his unmatched stardom in Germany, we’re back with yet another record he created in 2023, and this time it’s North America. Amidst the bundle of many memorable films in the year, Yash Raj Films’ Pathaan became the only Indian film to earn this prestigious record.
Pathaan released on 25th January 2023 when James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water was ruling the American box office. It not only managed to grab a day from it to become the top-grossing domestic movie in North America but also became the only Indian film to do so.

In 2023, the rules didn’t apply to many of the year’s biggest success stories.
For the past two decades, superheroes and sequels have dominated at the box office. But in the last year, many of the movie business’ Tiffany franchises had all the appeal of an Old Navy clearance bin, with the likes of Indiana Jones and Ethan Hunt swinging back into action for more high-flying adventures only to be greeted with grosses that were decidedly Earthbound. And cinema’s mightiest heroes, from Ant-Man to Aquaman, were told to hang up their tights and tridents as comic book movies suffered a historic collapse at the box office. Marvel, once seen as the movie business’s most indestructible brand, is asking tough questions about its creative direction, while DC Films has brought in new leadership in James Gunn and Peter Safran and tasked them with undertaking a total reboot.

While the industry as a whole felt more downs than ups this year, horror films continued to be a consistent attraction overall. While the studio hits were not quite as splashy as they were 2022, the year saw the birth of new franchises (M3GAN, The Pope’s Exorcist, Talk to Me, Thanksgiving), the revitalization of the reliable favorites (Evil Dead Rise, Insidious: The Red Door, The Nun II), and reminded us just how essential writers, actors, and the all the creatives both in front of the camera and behind it are to making any of this not only work, but sell.
As for the big horror trend this year, controversy was thy name. While there were a few entries critics and audiences were able to rally around, most of them drew conflicting opinions — which this list is surely proof of.
Skinamarink, The Outwaters, Cocaine Bear, Beau is Afraid, A Knock at the Cabin,...

Gary Dauberman had a good thing going at Warner Bros. for several years. He worked on the screenplays for the company’s two-part adaptation of Stephen King’s novel It, scripted the Conjuring Universe films Annabelle, Annabelle: Creation, and The Nun, co-created the 2019 Swamp Thing TV show, and wrote and directed Annabelle Comes Home. But then he wrote and directed an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel Salem’s Lot for the company… and two years after principal photography wrapped, they still haven’t figured out what they want to do with his Salem’s Lot. So it’s no surprise that Dauberman is now set up at a different company. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Dauberman has signed a first-look deal with Sony’s Screen Gems for feature films. He is expected to “create projects for himself while curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

Sony’s Screen Gems, behind recent horror movies including Insidious: The Red Door, The Pope’s Exorcist and The Invitation, is looking to make an even bigger mark on the horror space, The Hollywood Reporter informs us tonight. On that note, they’ve signed Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) to a first-look deal for the purposes of developing feature films in the genre.
THR notes, “The move comes as Sony seeks to rebuild Screen Gems, its division focused on lower-budgeted fare, into a more productive label, with horror being a top focus.”
As part of the deal, Gary Dauberman is said to be “creating projects for himself,” while also “curating a slate featuring established and up-and-coming filmmakers.”

Warner Bros. Beetlejuice 2 has wrapped filming, Tim Burton announced on Instagram.
This is not a shock considering the movie only had two days left of shooting once the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.
While there have been many pivots on the 2024 theatrical release calendar, we’ve been informed by studio insiders all along that Beetlejuice 2 will meet the highly savored Warner Bros. post-Labor Day weekend release date which has been a fertile ground for horror movies; big pics like It and The Nun launching to the month’s highest openings.
There had been whispers out there among exhibitors that Beetlejuice 2 was considering a Christmas release. The studio is looking to hold firm to Sept. 6, 2024.
Beetlejuice 2 reunites Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara from the original cast of the 1988 movie. Joining in the mix this time around is Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci and Justin Theroux.

“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. It’s also more than the $200 million DC superhero tentpole “The Flash.”
The eight films, begun in 2013 with James Wan’s “The Conjuring,” have earned over $2.25 billion on a combined budget of $71 million. Well, $2.37 billion if you count Michael Chaves’ “The Curse of La Llorona.” That early 2019 flick earned $123 million in early 2019 and contained a handful of “Conjuring” universe treats.

Warner Bros. Discovery shed more streaming subscribers in Max’s first full quarter of existence: July-September 2023. The company lost 700,000 streaming subs in the quarter, it reported on Wednesday; Max and Discovery+ now combine for 95.1 million streaming subscribers.
Wbd’s streaming business was able to turn a profit in the third quarter — just like it did at the beginning of the year. Adjusted Ebitda at direct-to-consumer was $111 million. The same segment lost money in Q2, but surprised with positive Ebitda in Q1, which is also the last time Wbd grew its streaming-subscriber base.
The loss of subs in the past two quarters is not really unexpected. Max, which launched on May 23, is a combination of the former HBO Max and Discovery+. While Discovery+ remains available as a standalone platform, it is now pretty redundant for folks who had previously subscribed to both of the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming services.

This post contains spoilers for "The Nun II."
It's difficult to encapsulate just how huge The Conjuring Universe truly is. The third successful horror franchise launched by James Wan (following "Insidious" and "Saw") has expanded into three distinct tracks of horror stories: "The Conjuring" films, following Ed and Lorraine Warren; the "Annabelle" films, centered on the titular doll; and "The Nun" films, centered on the demon Valak. "The Nun II" is the latest addition to the series, a massive hit at the box office and a film that laid the groundwork for what feels like the inevitable climax of the decades-spanning story. It feels like we're heading toward a final chapter like The Avengers, but with demons, possessed artifacts, and Patrick Wilson singing Elvis songs.

It's a wonder that horror filmmakers don't scare themselves senseless all the time. Whenever I see creepy set pieces like the freaky clowns from "Hell House LLC" or monster designs like the one brought to life by Bonnie Aarons in "The Nun," I imagine I'd be running for the hills after spending too much time on set -- like Bill Hader sprinting away from Bill Skarsgard's Pennywise on the set of "It: Chapter 2." It's no wonder, then, that the life-sized animatronic puppets and costumes used on the set of the new "Five Nights at Freddy's" movie gave some of the cast and crew the willies.
In a Reddit Ama ahead of the film's release this week, director Emma Tammi said she was unnerved the first time she came face to face with the titular killer bear. After Reddit user AnimeLonk asked if any part of the production scared her,...

Universal/Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s was still plenty game this weekend, crossing $100M at the international box office and $200M worldwide. The sophomore frame overseas, where this is a pure theatrical play, dipped 54% to deliver $35.6M in 74 markets for a $103.5M offshore cume and $217.1M global.
Fazbear and crew have surpassed the reported international box office totals of Insidious: The Last Key, Halloween, M3GAN, Lights Out, Evil Dead Rise, Get Out, The Black Phone, The Invisible Man and Insidious Chapter 3. The overall cume is above The Nun 2, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle Comes Home and Insidious: The Red Door in the same markets at the same point.
This is now the biggest Blumhouse film in 29 markets including Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Chile, Peru, Central America and Ukraine.
The Emma Tammi-directed horror pic added 11 new hubs this session. Spain saw the biggest opening Wednesday and biggest horror opening day ever...

Warner Bros. has been keeping director Gary Dauberman‘s adaptation of the Stephen King novel Salem’s Lot (buy a copy of the novel Here) on the shelf for a long time – and while a rumor recently surfaced that they may be sending the movie to the Max streaming service, we’re still waiting to see if that rumor is going to be debunked or confirmed. While we wait, King has decided to go ahead and share his thoughts on Dauberman’s film on his X account. Overall, King has a positive outlook on the new Salem’s Lot… even though it has diversions from the book that he didn’t agree with.
King said, “The Warner Bros remake of Salem’S Lot, currently shelved, is muscular and involving. It has the feel of “Old Hollywood,” when a film was given a chance to draw a breath before getting to business. When attention spans were longer,...

Exclusive: Black Bear and BlockFilm — the new production label of former Miramax boss Bill Block — are set to heat up the AFM market some more today with action movie Levon’s Trade, which will star Jason Statham (Fast & Furious franchise) and be directed by David Ayer (Suicide Squad) from a screenplay adapted by Sylvester Stallone (Creed).
The project marks Stallone’s first screenplay since Rambo: Last Blood in 2019 and Creed II in 2018. The screen icon, who was famously Oscar-nominated for his Rocky screenplay in 1977, has adapted Levon’s Trade from the novel of the same name by comic author Chuck Dixon. The book is the first of eleven in the popular Levon Cade thriller series. Stallone’s Balboa Productions had previously developed the project as a TV series.
The movie will chart how Levon Cade (Statham) left his “profession” behind him to go ‘straight’ and work in construction. He...

Sister Death is a horror movie directed by Paco Plaza starring Aria Bedmar and Almudena Amor.
It’s not uncommon for convents, churches, and the like to have terrified us throughout the centuries. Just take a look at the baroque paintings of Caravaggio and others to realize that this “chiaroscuro” thing has a lot of potential, and the film industry couldn’t resist it.
If Hollywood brought us “The Nun,” which was more successful with the audience than with critics, now comes “Sister Death” to Netflix. It’s a calm horror movie that serves as a prequel to “Veronica.” It knows how to build up suspense and maintain it before the (expected and necessary) final explosion.
It’s also commendable in its cinematography, directing, and screenplay.
