  • Just binge watched this show up to the current episode and I have to say, I love it. While certainly this isn't jolly laughs, it's very in depth and very realistic. This show is very much comedy, however it's done in such a way that, it replicates real life in many ways, it leaves in many depressing and unfunny moments which is really atmospheric and really makes you sympathise with the characters. One other thing this show does well is it's ability to know when to end things. There are many overarching plot lines but with each episode there are definitive ends and good developement towards characters and setting. It also cuts out many times where I have not wanted to continue, i.e. Awkward situations, for which I am thankful for.
  • Confronting, dealing with contemporary issues and points out th public hysteria around them whilst addressing the problems faced by social workers. Deliberately choosing a profession vilified by the public Jo Brand and Co, tackle the topics sensitively and humorously. the entire cast should get medals for this show.

Watch it, you may find it confronts some of your own prejudices in the nicest possible of ways.
  • Holy moly what a gem this show is! I stumbled upon it on the streaming service Stan, and have just finished watching the first season. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it so easy to watch. I personally found the style of humour to genuinely be very funny. It's very witty, black, sassy, serious, it's my jam <3 Damned finds the funny in social services. I love each character and their oddities. I love the awkward moments. This is coming from someone who enjoys those awkward moments on Peep Show haha - and on that note, the actress who plays Dobby is in this show Damned! Such a pleasant surprise :) Any who, I am really looking forward to starting the second season of this show, and highly recommend it to others. I had to write a review here, as there are only 8 here so far, and there should be more. I do really hope that this show gets discovered and enjoyed by more people. It's certainly worthy of the recognition! All the best and happy watching :)
  • This is one of my all time favorites. It's so funny and well written and you really get a sense of who each character is. So bummed this got cancelled I reached out to see if they shopped it around and apparently no one wanted to pick it up. I wish Netflix or Hulu would pick up the two seasons so more people could see this. It never aired here in America which absolutely does not make sense. This is a hoot! Definitely check it out if you haven't seen it.
  • Set in a social services office around 2 of the social workers. Both funny and sad. Poingnant on occasions. Well worth watching, particularly Alan Davies' low key, but exactly right, performance.

Comedic and also touches on difficult issues. Therefore cancelled! Just like Motherland! BBC can be a bit disappointing..
  • Working in an office for so long can make you appreciate the dynamics of a busy office, Nothing as serious as this narrative but the humor is well balanced with what the horrible things that people really do. Hard to watch but very rewarding. Hope they make a third season.
  • My father caught me watching this and sneered. It's one of those programs that remains 'meh', hence the 5/10 rating. An 'alrighter'. An 'it's decent, yeah' one. The acting is what you'd expect from a bunch of comedians: they behave as they usually do, being humorous over deep. Sometimes there are moments of character building, but the amount of care put into them is shallow. Alan Davies was surprising, as he managed to play quite a different character than his QI persona, and, out of all the team, I'd say he was the most interesting.

The saving grace of this one is the fact that Jo Brand has had experience with social work and the greatest pits of human suffering. When watching, you get the impression she may have pulled this from reality, which makes Damned more touching to watch. The scenes expressing mature or morbid lives in less fortunate households do work, and the viewer finds themselves rooting for the poorly funded, barely functioning team.

The plot, whilst working when it needs to, does often feel bare, with reality somewhat being prioritised over interest. There's a lot of filler, so to speak. It relies on the banter to keep it going, which is moderately humorous, but nothing above what you'd hear two strangers on a bus laughing about. I think for Damned to have been more successful, it should've really taken control over the resources it has, since the setting is that of room of sweating, miserable people. There was room for a darker sense of humour, true gallows, mischievous stuff. It might've retracted from the message, but that's precisely the problem.

Damned is a social commentary, and that's respectable, but it's not educative ENOUGH for it to work, and nor is it risky enough to be truly comical. It's in a grey area, and it had to push one way or the other to be anything above 'decent'.
  • It's a very funny series that seems somewhat ahead of its time, two series of terrific humour, sarcasm, absurdities, and definite touches of realism.

They took a group of people, namely social workers, and tried to show what they deal with, and add in some humour, they took some subjects, that are now almost too offensive to even mention, and made them funny, and why not? When did people lose their sense of humour?

Georgie Glen as Denise is an absolute riot, she is so funny, so cutting and scathing, she is the perfect opposite to Rose and Al. The timing is superb, Davies and Brand are just great together.

I wish there had been a third series, it should not have ended when it did, deserved a longer run.

It's quite left leaning it's fair to say, not sure anyone could argue with that, Daily Mail readers may be offended, Guardian readers will love it.

    Great show. 9/10.
  • When I saw the first episode I thought, great another bland, poorly written, dramedy, but give it time to grow on you and you quickly realise what a well observed, well acted piece of work it actually is, almost every comedy show I love I didn't like my first taste of, but over a year after seeing the first episode as has always been the case something made me come back to this show and I am very glad I did, it's allot better than it gets credit for.

I really wanted to like this. Alan is such a character on Q.I. and I haven't really seen him outside of it. The setting is something that could have the potential of being something like The Office, but I got a serious headache out of it and only half way through the first episode I had to stop watching. It wasn't funny at all and I generally love all the comedy that is produced on Britich television. It was such a mess with phones ringing all the time and very short and seemingly unimportant encounters that you just wanted it to end. Everything seems to have been filmed by a 6-year old too because it's very shaky and badly filmed. I hope it does become better after half the first episode, but even if it does, it has to be so much better that I actually think it will be impossible.

    :(
  • Warning: Spoilers
If only they could refrain from the political viewpoints. Otherwise this show would have been great. But a couple of the actors/actresses in this are known to spout of anti- this and that. Tired and boring.
