  • I was trepidatious when going into "Buddy System," afraid all of the personality of Rhett and Link, one of my favorite comedy duos on YouTube, would be lost in an expensive and corporate production. But one minute into the first episode, when the camera smoothly immerses itself onto the "Good Mythical Morning" set and follows Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal behind the scenes as the two discuss tucking their shirts into their underwear and whether or not it boosts confidence, I knew I was in good hands.

All of the fast-paced, zany, random, family-friendly humor that they showcase on GMM has made it into their YouTube Red debut. The story of "Buddy System," though it doesn't even take off until the second episode, is that Link loses his cell phone and their mutual former girlfriend steals it, intending to flood their channel with bad infomercials -- vengeance with a side of publicity.

But like I said, the story doesn't really begin until the second episode of this eight- episode series. The focus here is on the friendship of Rhett and Link, the anchor around which the show is constructed. The back-and-forth banter the two of them have is either so well-written that it feels like really good improv, or so well-improvised that it feels like really good writing. Their charisma carries every minute of "Buddy System," and when they're not on-screen, the supporting characters are equally ridiculous and fun.

Leslie Bibb shines as their ex-girlfriend, now dubbed "The Infomercial Queen" because of her empire of bad commercials, and though she mostly acts as the scenery-chewing villain, the more the plot develops, the more we get to see of her character, and of Bibb's range as a comedic actress. One outburst she has in the show's penultimate episode is riotous and makes one wish she had even more time on-screen.

Also in every episode is a musical number, full of the random lyrics that normally accompany Rhett and Link's songs. I appreciated that every song's style was different, as there's a rap song, a '90s boy band song, an early-2000s-era rock song, and even a barbershop quartet number. My personal favorite was a song about rollerskating that cleverly acted as, and this is just my interpretation, a satire of religious conflict. Pretty deep stuff coming from a lighthearted comedy show.

My only flaws with "Buddy System" are that one rather introspective episode toward the middle feels a little drawn-out and less entertaining than the others, and some of the joke reincorporation feels overdone at points, especially when we're on the sixth or seventh episode and we're still referencing jokes from the first instead of coming up with new ones.

Also, some of the visual effects don't really work, often feeling jarringly artificial and cheap, as is the case in the first episode, when we get a green-screen peek of a nighttime sky. But the comedic nature of the show and its own willingness to poke fun at itself save it, and the lackluster effects feel like jokes of their own rather than detriments. Most of the effects work is outdone by the outstanding production design in the musical sequences, anyway.

The most beautiful thing about "Buddy System" is how easy it is to recommend to people who don't even watch GMM. It certainly helps to be aware of Rhett and Link and the YouTube show they run, as their show is the McGuffin that launches the entire plot, but it isn't necessary to know who they are. As long as you like fun, ridiculous, and family-friendly humor, it's easy to recommend "Rhett and Link's Buddy System," and that this show probably has the most creative integrity, wit, and charm out of anything else YouTube Red offers is certainly worth a commendation.
  • Rhett and links buddy system (season 1) is a youtube red show that is a step away from their normal morning show routine. Their normal formula being a comedy morning show with daily unique bits is often very funny, entertaining and enjoyable.

I would recommend buddy system to the hardcore Rhett and link fan but not necessarily the average person who are not familiar with them. Good mythical morning, their morning show, always has a high level of entertainment from it that I would highly recommend to anyone. But buddy system has some weaknesses alongside its strengths.

Let's start by going over some of the areas that buddy system struggled in. One area that buddy system struggled in is its transitions between scenes. A lot of the transitions between scenes felt choppy or forced and completely unnatural at times. For instance most episodes would have a musical piece but the transition into those songs weren't always smooth or fluid. In fact there are times when the change happened so quickly I had to double back and make sure I hadn't missed them saying something leading up into the song.

Another area where buddy system struggled in is it felt like it struggled to know who their audience was geared towards. GMM is a youtube show that is made with all ages in mind. So there is no swearing and the content is roughly a PG rating. Buddy system is similar in that there is little swearing and it is roughly a PG rating. However, you could argue most of Rhett and links fans are not young or younger children. Most of their fans are younger adults. But the content in the series buddy system felt a little dumbed down so that it could be palatable for younger viewers but at the same time that sacrifice may have lost some opportunities to write content in buddy system for a slightly older audience. Buddy system in a sense "holds your hand" but I think there is no need to do that.

Now let's address the things about buddy system I liked. One thing I liked is how when they wrote the script they weren't afraid to experiment. There were a lot of odd things that happened that made me raise my eyebrows but I have to give them props for it because it shows their originality and unique ideas.

And the main thing I liked about buddy system is the songs. The music in the show is very well made and the level of care and effort they put into making the songs shows that they put a lot of their budget into the songs and it paid off. The songs are catchy and fun. Some remind me of OKGO, 90's Rap, and barbershop. So there's a lot to like when it comes to the songs not to mention the creative music videos they made to go with the songs.

All in all I would give buddy system a 7 out of 10 or roughly a "C" grade. It is fairly evidently that this is their first voyage into making a project that isn't their normal jam. There are a lot of areas that could have been better but the average fan of Rhett and link will be sure to enjoy this show. Also let me be clear this is my review of buddy system "season 1" there is a season 2 that I haven't watched and after watching it I may write a different review.
  • Every single episode was hilarious. It had all of the fun mythical stuff we all had come to know and love and then some. Wow Rhett and Link did a superb job on this what can only be described as an incredible achievement. Laughed so much, sang along and felt sad when it's over.

Upwards and on wards guys!! Thoroughly enjoyable, very well written and I am proud of them. I cannot express how much of an achievement this is for two very down to earth funny best friends. The narration at the beginning of each episode was so well done too. I really hope they continue writing stuff like this. They are a part of thousands of peoples days and hopefully thousands more in the future .

    Warning: Spoilers
It was hilarious. I found it extremely entertaining and I really liked that the songs felt like they were part of the guys' imagination and not really part of the plot. And I enjoyed that the plot was really far from reality but it still hinted at things that actually happened. It felt like watching the events of an alternate reality. If you are a fan of Rhett and Link, you'll definitely enjoy this.

    awesome
great show, really brings out the true comedy genius in these two friends. nothing like Good mythical morning this is definitely a show, and it would be awesome if was as long as one too. very funny watching these two adventure together on this show. show has great plot line that ties into there talk show Good Mythical morning. I really don't much else to say besides it is a definite must watch especially if you watch Good mythical morning. If you like good mythical morning your sure to enjoy this. I would for sure recommend this to a friend. Really anyone who wants to get a good laugh i'm sure would love this. That is about all there is to say about this show.
  • The first season was outstanding, from the first scene i was in for the whole ride. Loved the characters, especially the magic lady lmao. The second season is longer and just as wild and just as good, an alternate universe where they don't know each other ? And still become besties? Fanfiction could never. I can't believe it's been a lil secret that i didn't know about. I'm currently marathoning the entire series, i just can't get enough! I know it's never coming back, but i can't understand how it flopped when it first launched. If i had known it was happening when it did, i would have been beyond excited. Great work fellas!
  • It's as simple as that. The show is very memorable and funny. It truly brings the best in these two - acting, comedy and personality wise.

I am a big fan of GMM. It's a great show, and Rhett and Link have a lot of charisma to keep the show going. I was initially excited when the Buddy System was published. "More Rhett and Link!" I thought to myself.

But as the first episode went on (and on, and on, and on...) I forgot that Rhett and Link actually have a collection of skits and songs that I was never a big fan of. They would be silly or fun, but nothing so special that I would want to share it with my friends.

This show was a let down. 15 minutes felt like 30. The songs had cool visuals but were still bland and pointless. I'll just go back to watching GMM on the regular. If you're a big fan of Rhett and Link, you'll probably enjoy this show regardless. But if you demand a bit more out of your narrative, I recommend something from Cracked.
