Welcome to a new era of "Star Wars," in more ways than one. Today's newly-released trailer for "The Acolyte" has been a long time coming, promising to delve into an older and more unknown period of history in the galaxy far, far away. Set over a century before the prequel movies during the epoch known as The High Republic, the upcoming Disney+ series will cover wholly new ground that fans have never seen before -- at least, those who haven't been keeping up with the various official tie-in novels released over the last few years. But filling in lore gaps in the canon isn't the only reason why this exciting new story should be on our radar, however. The talent involved in this series both in front of and behind the camera immediately sets it apart from any other to this point, although one name stands tall above the rest.

Equal Strain on All Parts, the 31st and final album from the late Jimmy Buffett, is out now.
Comprising 11 originals and three covers, Equal Strain on All Parts is a fitting final entry in Buffett’s studio catalog. It features an array of collaborators including Paul McCartney, Emmylou Harris, Angelique Kidjo, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Naturally, Equal Strain is a mostly lighthearted record, its title inspired by Buffett’s grandfather’s description of a good nap. With a tracklist including song names like “Fish Porn,” “My Gummie Just Kicked In,” “University of Bourbon Street,” and “Nobody Works on Friday,” it encapsulates the most important tenet in Buffett’s artistry: Having a good time.
Pre-orders for Equal Strain on All Parts are ongoing. Stream the record via Apple Music and Spotify below.
Buffett died this past September at the age of 76 after a prolonged battle with skin cancer and lymphoma.

Actors and filmmakers Steven Yeun, John Cho, Justin Chon and Lee Isaac Chung shared their thoughts on the appeal of Korean Diaspora cinema – as well as how they see the current wave of content coming out of Korea – in a philosophical but relaxed press conference at Busan International Film Festival.
Lee, who directed Oscar-winning Korean immigrant story Minari, said he was amazed by the reaction to the film whenever it was screened as “people from all walks of life would want to talk about their own experiences, people who’d never emigrated, but they’d moved to some place new and found it stressful. I wonder if the immigrant story just speaks to many experiences.”
Chon, an actor-director whose Jamojaya is screening at the festival, said: “It’s just an interesting dramatic situation – being in transition and also an underdog story. It was right there for the taking, to tell immigrant stories,...

Let me put it this way: Netflix’s latest rom-com, Love at First Sight, took my 4/10 kind of day to a solid 6.5/10. That is me basically saying that the film, which I started watching only for work with less than the bare minimum expectation, made me feel good. There is a severe lack of good romantic comedies these days, which is particularly sad given the chaotic, misery-filled world we live in demands feel-good distractions. And the ones that Netflix churns out every now and then are mostly atrocities in the name of cinema. That is why I would compare coming across Love at First Sight to finding a needle in the haystack.
Amongst the movie genres, romantic comedy is probably the one that is sneered at the most by “Cinephiles.” This doesn’t make any sense to me, considering I have always been an admirer of both Richard Curtis and John Carney.

Donovan’s “Atlantis” is one of the most unusual songs in the classic rock canon, as it combines spoken word, rock, and Greek mythology. Donovan revealed a supposedly supernatural book inspired “Atlantis.” Subsequently, the tune’s composition garnered comparisons to a famous Beatles track.

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

And to think her star could have been even brighter, perhaps, if she had taken a meeting with Ari Aster.

Riki Lindhome, who was recently seen playing Dr. Valerie Kinbott in the Addams Family series Wednesday on the Netflix streaming service, has signed on to join Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), John Cho (Searching), and Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking) in director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, but wasn’t able to dig up any information on the character Lindhome will be playing… which is to be expected, because all They Listen plot and character details are being kept entirely under wraps.

The Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, was flooded with millennials and Gen-Zers on Feb. 21, all buzzing in excitement for the first night of Sza’s Sos tour. Advertisements for a “Seek & Destroy” speciality cocktail — made with pink lemonade, Tito’s, and cotton candy — were posted throughout the arena. Fans flocked for tour merch, poring over psychedelic graphic tees, chrome-emblazoned caps, and a purple-and-tan tote bag made by Los Angeles fashion company Online Ceramics. Less than three months after the long-awaited release of Sza’s second album, her performance would differ...

I'm not going to start this with the typical caveats — how this is my list of favorites, it's not a personal attack against you if your choices aren't represented, and blah blah blah. It's almost 2023, so I'll assume we all know how this works by now. You're hopefully here to read about some good movies and maybe be surprised by the selections or their order, and I'm hopefully going to provide an entertaining list and maybe slip in a surprise or two. Ideally, you'll take these as recommendations and add these movies to your queue if you haven't seen them. That's all! That's what we're doing here, and I hope you're ready to join me on a whirlwind recap of ten movies that stood out to me during another hellfire of a year on planet Earth. My list careens from small indies to maximalist blockbusters and back again, and watching...

I want to use this blurb to acknowledge a couple of films I’m yet to see that I feel, through a combination of my own personal taste and their critical reception, maybe would’ve made the cut had I seen them this year. The first of which is idiosyncratic anime Director Masaaki Yuasa’s Inu-Oh, a rock opera set amongst 14th century Japanese performers. I’ve been a fan of Yuasa’s bombastic and enveloping style ever since I watched The Tatami Galaxy a few years ago and am dying to see the latest in his ever-growing oeuvre of impressive works. The second film is Kogonada’s After Yang. Anyone who knows me on a personal level will know how much I loved his debut Columbus and to see the filmmaker follow up that up with a quiet, reflective sci-fi sounds too good to miss. That all being said,...

Chris Weitz went uncredited on his feature directorial debut American Pie, which he directed alongside his brother Paul Weitz, but since then he has earned directing credits on Down to Earth, About a Boy, The Golden Compass, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, A Better Life, and Operation Finale. He dealt with some horror elements in the Twilight movie, but now Deadline reports that he is going all-in on horror with his new film They Listen. They also report that Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant) and John Cho (Searching) have signed on to star in the film.
This makes They Listen a continuation of a working relationship between Weitz and Cho that stretches all the way back to American Pie. Weitz has only directed Cho in two movies previously, American Pie and Down to Earth, but Weitz was a producer on American Pie 2, American Wedding, American Reunion, See This Movie, In Good Company,...

Exclusive: 93-year-old Oscar nominee June Squibb (Nebraska) has found her first, long overdue leading role in Thelma, an upcoming “action” comedy written and directed by Josh Margolin, which has wrapped production. The actress is joined in the ensemble by Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), Richard Roundtree (Shaft), Parker Posey (The Staircase), Clark Gregg (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange).
Margolin’s first feature, based on a real-life experience involving his grandmother, is (half-jokingly) billed as Nebraska meets Mission: Impossible. It centers on 90-year-old grandmother Thelma Post (Squibb), who gets duped by a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson and sets out on a uniquely treacherous quest to reclaim what was taken from her.
Zoë Worth, a longtime collaborator of Margolin’s, and producing partner Chris Kaye started developing Thelma after reading an early draft in their writer’s group, Rock & Roll Universe. The film will be their first produced together.

Chris Columbus notably directed the first two beloved Home Alone movies, but he only got the gig after begrudgingly quitting his role as director on Christmas Vacation. Aside from John Hughes’ iconic '80s teen movies, like The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, the writer-director is also well-known for his popular holiday and adventure screenplays. Two of the most iconic and beloved Christmas movies of all time, Home Alone and Christmas Vacation, come from the mind of John Hughes and were released within a year of each other. Chris Columbus, Home Alone's director, was initially supposed to direct Christmas Vacation — and were it not for on-set differences with star Chevy Chase, he would have.
It's hard to imagine a world where the iconic Home Alone doesn't exist, but things came incredibly close to Chris Columbus making Christmas Vacation instead of Home Alone. The reason why...

An arrest has been made in the case of a 10-year-old girl who sought an abortion in Indiana after services were allegedly denied to her in Ohio. According to the Columbus Dispatch, Gershon Fuentes, age 27, was arrested on Tuesday. Law enforcement officials say Fuentes confessed to raping the child — whose identity has not been released to preserve her privacy — on at least two occasions, and has been charged with rape.
In the weeks leading up to the arrest, prominent right-wing pundits and government officials attempted to discredit the story as a liberal pro-abortion fantasy.

“You’re not gonna like the way this story ends,” announces the teenage narrator of “Don’t Make Me Go” as the film opens, “but I think you’re gonna like the story.” The first half of that sentence is so accurate it complicates the second. The movie’s ending is misguided to the point of being perplexing rather than upsetting, recasting everything that came before it in a less favorable light. That’s a shame, as this father-daughter drama starring John Cho has more than its fair share of touching moments before hitting the roadblock that is its questionable third act.
Directed by Hannah Marks and written by Vera Herbert, “Don’t Make Me Go” is in some ways an inversion of the “unexpected kid” genre in which the protagonist is introduced to the child they didn’t know they had. The difference is that here, circumstances of the life-and-death variety...

The ambitious Apple TV+ series “Pachinko” took 20 historical consultants from the United States, Korea and Japan, numerous translators, seven executive producers, two directors, two directors of photography, and 637 cast members to put together – 95 of whom are Asian. Directors Kogonada and Justin Chon split the first season in half, each directing four episodes, and it’s a testament to their collaborative vision that the show has drawn raves for its painterly aesthetic.
Lee’s novel tells the story of four generations, with one woman — Sunja — at the core. The show captures Sunja at three distinct points in her life: young childhood (Yu-na Jeon), teenage and young adulthood (Minha Kim), and older Sunja as a grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung).

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers for “After Yang.”
One evening in a not-too-distant future, a humanoid robot named Yang (Justin H. Min) suddenly shuts down.
Mika (Emma Malea Tjandrawidjaja), the young girl he has practically raised, is devastated. Her chronically busy parents, Jake (Colin Farrell) and Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) are more irritated than heartbroken by the loss of their live-in babysitter. When Jake goes to get Yang repaired, he discovers a portal into his memories – and realizes he’s been looking at everything the wrong way.
“After Yang,” the second film by “Columbus” writer-director Kogonada, can be hard to pin down. It falls somewhere between science fiction and speculative fiction, but there are no heroes or villains, space battles or swamp creatures. It’s a family drama, but almost all of the plot plays out internally. What is clear is that it stands apart from other films about artificial intelligence,...
