Updated: Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was greeted with a very warm reception during its Cannes Film Festival world premiere in an early showcase last week, and amid much love for franchise architect George Miller. It has followed up with strong critical and social scores. Nevertheless, in this currently wonky theatrical landscape, the prequel underperformed in its global opening this launch weekend, grossing $58.9M from 76 total markets through Sunday.
That includes $33.3M from overseas play and $25.6M from domestic; the latter for its Friday-Sunday. We are waiting on confirmation of the four-day North American number given the domestic holiday on Monday.
Yes, we expected higher when we did our preview earlier this week, and perhaps the industry as a whole was praying too much at the feet of this origin story. It’s undeniably got some amazing action.

As per the synopsis, "as an Evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother (Halle Berry), and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum."
Slick, visceral kineticism and mind-blowingly impressive gun-fu are integral to every fight John Wick (Keanu Reeves) gets involved with. Throughout the four "John Wick" films, dynamism has been the name of the game in terms of one-upping fight scenes, where everything from cars, pencils, explosives, and even stairs have been incorporated to keep the adrenaline flowing. In "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum," John is the definition of a marked man, hounded by every assassin across the globe after breaking the rules, and he stumbles into a weapons shop with cramped rooms. After a few assassins corner him inside, there is but one option left: improvise and adapt with the countless antique knives displayed on glass panels to overcome a monumentally messed-up situation.

Keanu Reeves established himself as a bankable commercial action star in the 90s with films such as Point Break and The Matrix. However, Reeves’ 1994 action-drama Speed was a blockbuster and catapulted the actor to new heights. As a result, it was a surprise that Reeves did not return for a sequel.

Keanu Reeves’ John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was one visual treat that climbed to the status of the top-grossing movie in the franchise in just 10 days of its release. While John Wick 4 provided an even greater movie experience, the potential of Chad Stahelski’s realistic filmmaking was first noticed in the third film. The effort that went into making one underwater fight scene proves how Stahelski’s film was anchored in reality.

Ana de Armas is out for blood in “Ballerina,” the upcoming spinoff to Lionsgate’s successful “John Wick” franchise. And she’s got a question for Keanu Reeves.
“How do I start doing what you do?” she asks the legendary hit man. “Looks like you already have,” Reeves notes wryly.
The trailer that Lionsgate shared during its presentation to theater owners and executives at CinemaCon on Wednesday was heavy on ass-kicking, with de Armas’ assassin making short work of several assailants, torching a truck with a flamethrower, leaping from moving vehicles and engaging in brutal hand-to-hand combat in a burning building. Think de Armas’ bone-crunching sequence in “No Time to Die” stretched over feature length with a much, much higher body count. She also dances, sticking a landing like Margot Fonteyn when not wielding firearms.
The movie unfolds between the events of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4.

Lionsgate is stirring excitement with news of a fresh John Wick spin-off series. This comes as a surprise, especially since it won’t connect to the previously aired prequel, The Continental. At a recent conference, Lionsgate’s vice-chairman, Michael Burns, dropped hints about this project alongside an animated ‘Twilight’ continuation. He believes the John Wick series, starring Keanu Reeves, will grab our attention as a TV series.
The Continental, for those who might not have caught it, was a dive into the backstory of Winston Scott, a key character from the John Wick movies. It aired as three extended episodes on Peacock and Prime Video, showcasing the origins of the New York Continental Hotel – a safe zone for the underworld’s assassins. Despite its connection to the John Wick universe, it seems the new series will chart a different path.

John Wick has been one of the most iconic action franchises in all of Hollywood. Keanu Reeves’s portrayal of the titular character was incredible, to say the least. Not only were the fight sequences captivating, but the world that the story built and the dynamics were some of the most interesting in the genre.
John Wick
While the series had an excellent run, the main story of Wick finished with the fourth part, which ended with Reeves’s character passing. It is only natural that fans cannot let this be the end of his character when the series is still going on. Recently, a fan-made trailer was released online for a hypothetical John Wick 5 and the concept is quite interesting.

In the 95 years that they’ve been handing out Academy Awards, just 10 African-American actresses have won dating back to Hattie McDaniel’s famed supporting actress triumph for “Gone with the Wind” in 1940. Nine of those wins have come in Best Supporting Actress, with Halle Berry being the lone victor in Best Lead Actress for “Monster’s Ball” in 2002. Berry has expressed disappointment that no other Black winner has followed in her footsteps over the past two decades. But the truth is that while it was 51 years between McDaniel’s win and the second for Whoopi Goldberg in “Ghost” in 1991, things have improved significantly over the past few decades for African American actresses and actors in terms of winning at the Oscars in the supporting categories in particular.
This year, there are five opportunities for Black performers to take home an acting trophy spread across three categories: Colman Domingo (“Rustin”) and Jeffrey Wright...

The first John Wick movie would easily have been a one-hit wonder, but with the presence of an actor like Keanu Reeves and a filmmaker like Chad Stahelski, the series has become one of the most revered action franchises of all time. Now having a gross of more than a billion dollars worldwide, its last movie was a cherry on top thanks to its usual adrenalin-packed action scenes and grueling narrative.

Currently overseeing the entire franchise, John Wick’s Chad Stahelski is said to be working with Ballerina director Len Wiseman. Focusing on the additional action sequences for the film is what apparently got the spinoff delayed by another year.

According to reports, John Wick spin-off film Ballerina has been given a delay from June of this year all the way into June, 2025.
Ballerina is set to be the latest action-packed instalment in the John Wick franchise, following the hugely popular four mainline movies that star Keanu Reeves as the fearsome hitman. As it stands though, Ballerina reportedly isn’t action-packed enough and has been delayed for a year so that further shooting can take place to insert more fisticuffs.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources at Lionsgate have confirmed that additional photography will be taking place to bolster the film’s action sequences. Interestingly, the report also states that the director of the John Wick films, Chad Stahelski, will be on set to supervise the shooting of these additional sequences alongside Len Wiseman, Ballerina's original director.

Ian McShane is 81, but you’d never know it watching him in “American Star.”
Also a producer of director Gonzalo López-Gallego’s new film, the English actor plays Wilson, a seasoned assassin who visits the Canary Islands’ Fuerteventura for a job, but instead unexpectedly becomes involved in the life of a French expatriate (Nora Arnezeder) and the lonely child of a vacationing couple (Oscar Coleman). From the first scene, McShane dances across the screen with the same effortlessness of a performer a quarter of his age, as his character reckons with an escalating series of disruptions to a sequence of events whose outcome is inevitable: someone dying of a bullet from his gun.
Though he’s been working in film, TV and theater for more than six decades, McShane has become well known in America largely in the last two, playing mentors and authority figures on series like “Deadwood” and “American Gods,...

XYZ Films knows a good thing when they see it, and that’s why the studio preemptively purchased the U.S. rights to Skyline: Warpath, a sequel in the Skyline universe starring Iko Uwais and Scott Adkins. Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline) directs the threequel from his own script, with filming taking place in Indonesia. You can check out Uwais and Adkins in the first-look images from Skyline: Warpath above and below.
Joining Uwais and Adkins and cast members are Louis Mandylor, Randall J. Bacon, and Yayan Ruhain.
According to XYZ, the story for Skyline: Warpath picks up five years after Beyond Skyline. The plot “follows Sua (Uwais) as he leads The Resistance against the aliens. When he discovers the powerful alien Radial Gauntlet, he must deal with both the corrupt Eric (Adkins) and the army of alien invaders.”

John Wick: Chapter 4 is a masterclass in action cinema. Despite being nearly three hours long, the action extravaganza maintains momentum by letting the audience breathe between intense set pieces as we follow Keanu Reeves’ John Wick fighting for survival yet again. But it is the French-set action set pieces that electrify the last third of the movie in incredible ways, and were my focus of conversation with stunt coordinator and second-unit director Scott Rogers.
With the film earning much-deserved acclaim in year-end consideration, I caught up with Rogers to discuss what his role is in layman’s terms, how they shot the Arc de Triomphe sequence, the experience of working with Keanu Reeves, and whether he sees a future in directing.
The Film Stage: How are you today?
Scott Rogers: I’m great. How are you?
I can’t complain. I got to watch John Wick 4 again last night.

If you're Dominican, chances are you're familiar with morir soñando, a simple but refreshingly crisp batida (milkshake) made with milk, orange juice, and vanilla extract. As simple as the three-ingredient drink seems, there's a reason it's given such a poetic name. "Morir soñando" translates as "to die dreaming," and after just one sip, one instantly feels like they've been transported into a dream - even if just for a matter of seconds. That was exactly the feeling Dominican American comedians and real-life besties Sasha Merci and Glorelys Mora, who both grew up in uptown (Merci specfically in the Bronx), wanted audiences to feel when they created their first all-Dominican comedy show back in 2019. On Monday, Nov. 6, the Morir Soñando show took over the historic United Palace, formerly Loew's 175th Street Theatre, in Washington Heights. It was the first show in the New York Comedy Festival to include an all-Dominican lineup,...

Keanu Reeves has been at the forefront of some of cinema's most important franchises, including "The Matrix" and "John Wick." Even one of his biggest bombs has, against all odds, also become a franchise. Reeves starred in Universal's tremendously expensive blockbuster "47 Ronin" back in 2013. It was a major flop at the time and actually hurt the actor's career a bit. But nearly a full decade later, everything came full circle, and a sequel to that flop was released. Yes, was! As in, it already came out ... last year.
"Blade of the 47 Ronin" is a sequel to the movie in question, and debuted in 2022. One would be forgiven for not realizing it, as it wasn't quite as big as the original, to put it mildly. Unfortunately, Reeves didn't return for the follow-up, but for those who enjoyed that film, there is a sequel out there you can watch right now.

Helen Lee-Kim has re-upped her contract as president, international, for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. Lee-Kim has generated nearly $1 billion in sales since re-joining the studio in December of 2017. She will continue to head the international licensing of Lionsgate’s slate of first-run movies while shepherding the company’s multi-platform and global direct-to-streaming business.
Her most recent successes include “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which earned $253 million out of $440 million overseas, a 62% international uptick from “John Wick: Chapter 3.” While “Saw X,” which earned by far the best reviews of the ongoing horror franchise, is near $100 million global on a $13 million budget as it continues its overseas rollout.
She also closed deals with international partners on key Lionsgate properties including “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.” The buzzy prequel to Lionsgate’s flagship tentpole IP, based on a novel from Suzanne Collins, will open theatrically on November 17. This summer...

Where to Stream ‘John Wick’ Prequel Series ‘The Continental’ and Get Tickets to Its Hitman Hotel Bar
Before there was John Wick, there was Winston Scott, the manager of Manhattan’s high-end hitman hotel. That’s the premise of The Continental: From the World of John Wick, a three-part prequel series that begins streaming Friday on Peacock.
Based on the Keanu Reeves action film franchise, The Continental takes place in 1970s Manhattan and explores how Winston (Colin Woodell) came to lead the hotel for professional assassins. When his brother Frankie (Ben Robson) steals something “very important to a lot of very dangerous people” from the current Continental hotelier Cormac (Mel Gibson), Winston assembles a team of killers to save his brother and take on the hotel — and every assassin in it.
To celebrate the action-packed spinoff, Lionsgate and Peacock are bringing the assassin underworld to the Big Apple with Welcome to the Continental: The Hotel Bar Experience, a three-week-long pop-up that kicks off today in the Financial District.

It's hard to imagine a show or movie in the John Wick universe without John Wick, but that's exactly what "The Continental" is. The new three-part Peacock series is technically a prequel to the John Wick films, but it's entirely centered on Winston Scott, played in the original movies by Ian McShane. "The Continental" stars Colin Woodell as Winston and explores his origin story, tracing how he came to run a hotel that provides sanctuary for off-duty assassins and other criminals.
Based on the timeline alone, it's technically impossible Reeves could appear as John Wick in "The Continental," since his character is a child in the 1970s. As fun as it would be to see Reeves play a teenager, the 59-year-old actor has passed that threshold at this point.
It's also unlikely we'll see a young version of John in the show. Thanks to the comics and "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum,...

“John Wick: Chapter 3” director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves were partially motivated to make a fourth chapter in the action franchise because they felt they had disappointed audiences with the finale to the third installment, the filmmaker said in a recent “Happy Sad Confused” podcast interview.
Speaking to podcast host Josh Horowitz in an episode aired Monday, Stahelski stated, “We did the third movie and then we were really done… We’re like, ‘We’re done.’ And then again, it was a year later, Keanu and I both felt like we kind of let everybody down with the ending of No. 3.”
At the conclusion of the 2019 actioner, Wick helps Winston (Ian McShane) retake control of the Continental. However, he is betrayed by his colleague and shot several times before stumbling off the hotel roof. In the film’s final moments, the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) carts our inexplicably...

Going into filming the action fantasia that is "John Wick: Chapter 4", franchise director Chad Stahelski had some big challenges to overcome. How the hell do you shoot a fight scene at the Arc de Triomphe at the height of rush hour? How do you shoot a video-game-inspired top-down sequence that requires John Wick to unleash a firestorm of incendiary "dragon's breath" ammo and looks like it was shot in one long take? And perhaps most challenging of all, how do you top three previous films which elevated action to an art form, influencing a whole era of similar films as a result?
Stahelski was used to tackling such issues. Back when "John Wick" was yet to make its 2014 debut, he and co-director David Leitch were basically making what was supposed to be a meager B-movie style project with a star whose then most recent movie — "47 Ronin" — was a bonafide box office bomb.

‘Rebel Moon’ Trailer: Zack Snyder’s Sci-Fi Epic Wages Massive War in Space, Sequel Gets Release Date
Netflix has released the official trailer for Part 1 of Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon,” titled “A Child of Fire,” coming to the streamer on Dec. 22, 2023. Part 2, titled “The Scargiver,” will arrive on April 19, 2024.
The film follows an enigmatic young woman (played by Sofia Boutella) who must search for fighters who can fight off an impending invasion by the despotic ruler Regent Balisarius (Fra Free).
Here’s the official logline: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. [Editor’s Note: The following story contains major spoilers for “John Wick: Chapter 4.”]
John Wick is dead, right?
“John Wick: Chapter 4” director Chad Stahelski spoke to Empire magazine about the ending originally shot for the film, which indicated to audiences that John Wick was very much still alive. In the final theatrical version, John Wick appears to die on the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur while ruminating on his family. Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne’s characters are then seen looking over his grave — implying Reeves’ character has died without ever explicitly showing so.
“We had a different ending,” Stahelski said. “[The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending. We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

Plot: Set 23 years after the original story which inspired it, The Machine finds Bert Kreischer facing familial crisis and the arrival of his estranged father when the ghost of his booze-soaked past arrives: a murderous mobster hellbent on kidnapping Bert back to the motherland to atone for his crimes. Together, he and his father must retrace the steps of his younger self in the midst of a war between a sociopathic crime family while they attempt to find common ground.

Whenever someone signs on to be in an action movie, they are doing that with the knowledge that there is a chance they might get hurt. The same goes for professional athletes. Even if the risk is small and every precaution is taken, there is still that creeping thought that you could pull, break, or rupture something. This is why stunt performers are so vital, putting their bodies on the line. They are there to both make the actors look good and to mitigate the risk of injury to those actors as well.
When you sign on to be in a "John Wick" movie though, that responsibility required for taking care of and preparing your body for the action set pieces increases exponentially. More than almost every single action film series going right now in Hollywood, the "John Wick" films demand the most out of their actors, requiring them to...

Lionsgate has officially noted that the four “John Wick” films have topped $1 billion at the global box office. Its new cume, $1.011 billion in all, comes from a combined production budget of just $245 million, for a 4.12 times rate of return just through theatrical revenue. It again shows the value of at least trying to create new or outright original IP amid a sea of revamps and revivals.

Since its establishment in 2019, Leonine Studios has become one of Germany’s leading film distributors.
Forged by the merger of two companies, Concorde Film and Universum Film, the distribution powerhouse releases between20 and 25 films a year, including around five in-house productions or co-productions, says Bernhard zu Castell, Leonine Studios’ chief distribution officer.
“Our aim is to offer a slate of event movies that is an optimal blend of genres for all target groups and all our partners in the highest possible quality,” adds zu Castell, who previously headed Universum Film. “This strategy was key in establishing ourselves as a reliable distributor and licensor for all content platforms.”
The company last year enjoyed its biggest hit yet with “School of Magical Animals 2,” a fast-growing franchise that Leonine also co-produces. The film sold more than 2.8 million admissions (3 million counting Austria), making it 2022’s most successful German release and the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year by admissions.

Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” passed $400 million worldwide this week, a first for the R-rated, Keanu Reeves-starring action series that puts it in contention to become a top-earning franchise — a win that the studio greatly needed to meet Wall Street’s lofty expectations.
The fourth installment has already earned more — $176 million and counting — domestically than “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.” Cruciallly, though, what’s letting it far outpace the previous film is the $226 million it has earned overseas, 43% more than the $157 million earned by “Chapter 3.”
That’s an overseas bump on par with the third entries for “Jason Bourne” (up 17%), “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” (up 83%), “Fast & Furious” (up 213%) or the 3-D enhanced “Resident Evil: Afterlife” (up 247%). It didn’t quite soar to infinity and beyond overseas on the fourth go-around as with some action franchises, but “John Wick 4” will still end up earning over $100 million more than its predecessor.

Global audiences have been gaga for Baba Yaga with Lionsgate/Thunder Road Films/87 Eleven’s John Wick: Chapter 4 now having passed the $400M mark worldwide.
The Keanu Reeves-starrer jumped out of the gate in late March, scoring a $137.5M global debut in a best-ever for the franchise. JW4 in mid-April then became the top-grossing film in the series; it’s also the best-reviewed John Wick movie ever at 94% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Currently, JW4 is estimated at $226M overseas and $402M global (+22% versus John Wick 3 – Parabellum’s final tally). That’s after a weekend that brought in another $10.1M from 86 international box office markets.
The previous titles in the series have had staggered overseas releases while JW4 kicked off in 71 markets, the widest day-and-date release internationally for the franchise.
Anticipation was high for the Chad Stahelski-directed pic with Reeves starting a promotional tour at Brazil Comic Con in December.
