Getting impatient for Kenneth Lonergan to get his act together and make another great movie? Ghostlight should scratch that itch and more besides, being a funny, intelligent and yet at times almost unbearably sad movie that takes a searing family tragedy and spins it into a riveting redemption story that, while a little predictable in the more familiar second half, somehow never hits a false note. Although technically an ensemble piece, with a lovely cast of supporting players whose thespian antics will ring a bell with actors of all generations, it rests squarely on a powerhouse performance from Chicago stage veteran Keith Kupferer, whose career must surely about to enter a whole new phase, perhaps to the fill the void left by the late, great Brian Dennehy.

Anna Graves, the Minnesota-born singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who composes with the candor of a late-night conversation where nothing is off the table, is introduced on “Easy For You,” her first single. Revealing an honesty and vulnerability that seeps through the cracks between dusty acoustic guitar and sparse production like glimmers of light underneath a locked door, “Easy For You” is the first music from her upcoming debut EP, Ghostland.
Anna bares the roots of “Easy For You.” “It was inspired by a relationship that ended when I was in Nashville, and it haunted me,” she admits. “It devastated me, my ex was talking mad shit about me. It hurt. I lived to make other people happy. So, it felt like anything they said about me was true – even if it wasn’t. The only thing I could do was say, ‘If that’s the way you cope, do what...

It’s a long journey from a school in Beirut in the early 90s to a screening room at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. But two school friends, director Samah El Kadi and writer Rani Nasr, have teamed up with producer Michelle Ayoub to bring their story of childhood innocence clashing with political reality to life in “Bubblegum Brigades,” a feature film project pitched as part of the Red Sea Lodge workshop.
El Kadi told Variety that the real life “Bubblegum Brigades” started as “a secret society where we used bubblegum as a bribery technique to get members, and then it got cooler, and then we staged sit-ins and a revolution, and it failed as did every revolution we were part of in Lebanon afterwards.”
Commercials producer Ayoub first read the script in 2019. Its tale of rebellion chimed with the political ferment of the time, and not only in Lebanon.

Rosie. F******g. Perez. We’ve been on a roll with films overshadowed by controversy lately, especially after witnessing the real-life kangaroo violence in Ted Kotcheff’s Wake in Fright and the injuries sustained by the lead actress in Pascal Laugier’s Incident in a Ghostland (on top of a problematic queer killer). Ever since his late ‘90s heyday when he swapped chins with John Travolta in Face/Off and grew a mullet to take on John Malkovich in Con Air, Nicolas Cage has been trading off his reputation as an actor capable of delivering his own special brand of crazy to the screen.
The past five years though have seen him kick the crazy into high gear with a string of gloriously inventive movies that have one thing in common: Cage, front and center, losing his shit. Mom and Dad, Mandy, Color Out of Space, and Willy’s Wonderland have been the notable highlights in a recent run of films that have otherwise been consigned to the realm of forgettable direct-to-video releases.

The conceit is pretty straight forward: a dude must regain his freedom by rescuing a young woman. It's when you start adding layers that this thing goes bonkers - and since it’s directed by Sion Sono, you know it gets pretty wild.
Nicolas Cage plays the prisoner, a bank robber in a former samurai town who is sprung by the governor, strapped into a suit covered in explosives and then sent on a death mission into the "Ghostland" to rescue the governors' niece.
Prisoners of the Ghostland may well be the movie we did know we wanted. Or needed.

"How do I get out of here?" "You must surrender to fate!" Rlje Films has revealed the official trailer for a wacky, they-don't-make-'em-like-they-used-to, ultra violent action comedy from the Japanese director Sion Sono, called Prisoners of the Ghostland. This first premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival this year, and it will also be playing at the Fantasia and London Film Festivals next. Nicolas Cage stars as the prisoner, known as "Hero", and he's strapped with leather suit that will self-destruct in five days. He's sent to rescue The Governor's daughter, who has disappeared into a dark supernatural universe. To escape the nightmare world, Hero must break the evil curse controlling the mysterious Ghostland. A "delirious mash-up of Western, samurai, and postapocalyptic thriller is a sly spoof of the mythical hero’s journey." Also with Sofia Boutella, Nick Cassavetes, Bill Moseley, Tak Sakaguchi, and Yuzuka Nakaya, among many others. This film...

Half-naked and bleary-eyed, Hero (Nicolas Cage) is surrounded in Samurai Town. He looks to the left: all cowboy gunmen, outflanked by wary samurai. He looks to the right: dolled-up geishas croon at him from afar. So he looks ahead: Governor (Bill Mosely), clad in a pristine white suit, sneers back at him. This is Hero’s mission, he realizes: he needs to get the hell out of here.

This scene totally encapsulates the craziness of Sion Sono’s hotly-anticipated whack-o epic, “Prisoners of the Ghostland.” Sion Sono’s first English-language film — starring Nicolas Cage in a Samurai-Western-post-Nuclear fallout fantasyland — premiered at Sundance on Sunday night. Though the premiere was strictly online, applause was no less muted; critics on on Twitter, Letterboxd, and even Whatsapp press chats gave the film glowing reviews.

When it comes to the films of Sion Sono, the one thing they all have in common is that they are all, in one way or another, a total gonzo cinematic experience that generally defies the constructs of traditional visual storytelling. And his latest, Prisoners of the Ghostland, very much keeps that tradition alive with his East meets West post-apocalyptic genre mashup that has elements of classic spaghetti westerns, Mad Max, Escape from New York, and Versus coursing through its very amped-up veins. While Prisoners of the Ghostland is uneven at times, and the story loses some of its energy in the latter half, the parts that do work about it work exceedingly well, and I guarantee this is a film that fans will be debating and discussing for years to come.

Last night, Prisoners of the Ghostland, the latest from trailblazing filmmaker Sion Sono, premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The genre-bending post-apocalyptic actioner stars Nicolas Cage as a bank robber called “Hero,” who is tasked by a nefarious figure known only as “The Governor” to retrieve his granddaughter (played by Sofia Boutella), who has run away and gone off the grid. To take on the role of The Governor in Prisoners of the Ghostland, Sono brought on veteran actor and fan favorite Bill Moseley, who relished the opportunity to play the over-the-top bad guy, even if he wasn’t very familiar with the director’s work prior to becoming involved.
“My contact for Ghostland was the writer, Reza Sixo Safai,” Moseley explained. “We're pals here in Los Angeles, and he had talked about the movie and suggested I look into it. I didn't really know anything about Sion Sono, so...

Arguably the hardest working man in show business, Nicolas Cage appeared in over 40 films the last decade alone. Yes, he may no longer work with the likes of David Lynch, Brian De Palma, Francis Ford Coppola, Charlie Kaufman or the Coens, but the eternally entertaining actor usually finds a gem every now and again that truly utilizes his eccentric talents. That’s why the prospect of him teaming with a director as unhinged and prolific as he is an actor made for the most-anticipated collaboration in some time. With Cage as his lead, Sion Sono––one of Japan’s most creative, kinetic filmmakers––embarked on his English-language debut Prisoners of the Ghostland following his life-altering, death-defying heart attack. The results are a madcap Mad Max-esque, Gilliam-style fever dream that throws everything at the screen that its limited, but resourceful budget can muster up. The actual experience of watching this...

At some point in the distant future, long after nuclear holocaust or airborne plague has wiped out the human race, some film critic will no doubt uncover a list of the projects Nicolas Cage has turned down, and it will finally become clear how the actor determined the course of his career.
For about a dozen years, from mid-’90s Bruck-buster “The Rock” through family hamster-tainment “G-Force,” it has seemed that the ka-ching of a cash register must have been the deciding factor, but in the dozen years since, a pattern has emerged that Cage isn’t merely cashing checks but may in fact be shaping the world’s most eccentric filmography by design.

The 57th directorial credit in his vast filmography, Sion Sono’s Prisoners of the Ghostland premieres at this year’s Sundance before his 56th, Red Post on Escher Street, plays Japan Society next month as part of the series “21st Century Japan: Films From 2001-2020.” Ghostland is Sono’s first English-language film and stars Nicolas Cage in a spaghetti western-cum-Western film, in the global sense. Cage plays Hero, a bank robber sprung from jail by Samurai Town’s wealthy warlord The Governor (Bill Moseley). He offers Hero his freedom in exchange for finding his missing granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella). The plot owes much to John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A. and the prison of Ghostland looks transplanted from Sidney Lumet’s The Wiz, but the directorial execution is pure Sono.

One of my personal favorite movies of 2018 was also one of the year’s most controversial: Incident in a Ghostland, written and directed by Pascal Laugier (Martyrs). It’s just as brutal and grueling as you’d expect from one of the pioneers of New French Extremity, but it’s also a beautiful meditation on literature’s ability to […] The post Shudder’s August 2019 Us Highlights Include Elm Street Franchise and Controversial Incident In A Ghostland appeared first on Dread Central.

2018 has been, yet again, another fantastic year for movies. There has been some great films in the cinema, on DVD and VOD and the film festivals we’ve covered have been jam-packed with quality movies. Which makes it Very hard to narrow down a list of the Top 10 of the year! With that being said here’s Alain’s pickls of the ten best of the year – and if you’re not already, make sure your following Alain on Twitter @Wightblood
1. Hereditary “I’m certain this will go down as one of the great horror movies in years to come. Completely original and truly scary.”
2. Bodied “Somehow a film about ‘battle rap’, something I know little of and have no interest in, is one of my favourite movies of the last ten years. It’s that good.”
3. A Quiet Place “Horror brings more great originality this year, as well as horror with emotion.

To celebrate the release of Incident in a Ghostland – out on Blu-ray & DVD 3rd September from Arrow Video – we are giving away a copy on Blu-ray!
From the director of 2008’s horror ordeal, Martyrs, Incident in a Ghostland is a terrifying thrill ride that’s as intense as it is disturbing. Having screened at 2018’s Arrow Video FrightFest to positive reviews ahead of its UK Blu-ray & DVD debut, Pascal Laugier’s latest will have you hiding behind your hands and squirming in your seat.
It would spoil things to give too much away about the plot as it’s a film best watched when you’re unprepared for it but the lead cast give powerhouse performances, really selling the characters. Combine this with Laugier’s unique, visceral visual style and you genuinely believe these characters are trapped in an inescapable nightmare.

Pascal Laugier is well-known in horror circles as pretty much the godfather of 21st-century extremism. Over 10 years on, his heady French thriller Martyrs still stands as something of a measure for just how twisted an under-the-radar genre movie can be. His latest, a second English-language offering (following 2012’s so-so The Tall Man), hits some of the same troubling depths as his most-talked-about work, but with a more high-octane edge, ditching the slow build for a one-two-three reveal that just about knocks the wind out of you.
Incident In A Ghostland begins as a bare-bones home-invasion thriller – two teenage girls and their mother are victim to a horrific (and we mean horrific) attack – but what builds out from there defies both expectation and convention at nearly every single turn. It’s nothing short of an assault on the audience; an emotionally, psychologically and philosophically charged no-holds-barred horror that burrows deep down...

Guillermo del Toro didn’t need a snazzy trailer, a visually arresting poster, or an A-list actor to sell buyers at Cannes on “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.”
In lieu of extra bells, whistles, or shrieking, Bernard Hermann-style violins, del Toro took the stage at the Carlton Hotel armed with his passion for the blood-soaked genre. For roughly an hour, del Toro and director André Øvredal talked for 45 minutes about their vision for “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” while dipping into their deep connection to films about monsters, ghosts, and otherworldly elements.
“The presentation he did wasn’t a bunch of dazzle dazzle and movie stars,” said Nick Meyer, CEO of Sierra/Affinity, the sales company hawking foreign rights to the picture. “It was two artists talking about what makes this genre global. It was a master class.”

Deadpool actress Taylor Hickson is suing her latest film’s production company after allegedly suffering a gruesome on set injury that she says is debilitating to her career.
The actress was filming “an emotionally charged scene” for her upcoming movie Ghostland during which her director Pascal Laugier, who is not a defendant in the suit, allegedly encouraged her to pound on a glass pane, according to a lawsuit obtained by Deadline.

Taylor Hickson says she was 19 years old, working on an indie horror film called “Ghostland,” when her director ordered her to keep pounding on a glass door. She asked, according to a lawsuit filed this week, if it was safe. The director, Pascal Laugier, insisted that it was, and so did a producer, the lawsuit said. But the glass shattered, “causing head and upper body to fall through the door and shards of glass,” according to the suit. The left side of Hickson’s jaw was slashed by the broken glass, leaving “permanent scarring” that took “approximately 70 stitches” to close,...

"Are you going to let me die alone?" The official French trailer has debuted for the latest horror film from French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), titled Ghostland or also Incident in a Ghost Land. The story is about a house where a woman had to fend off intruders to save her daughters. Years later, the two of them grow up with completely different personalities, still traumatized by the events. When they all reunite at the house once again, strange events began to occur. I like the tagline on the second poster: "you really thought you've been scared before?" Oh damn. The horror film stars Crystal Reed, Taylor Hickson, Rob Archer, Emilia Jones, Adam Hurtig, Anastasia Phillips, Mylène Farmer, and Alicia Johnston. The film opens first in France, then should hit Us theaters sometime in the spring. Take a peek if you dare. Here's the first international trailer for Pascal Laugier's Ghostland,...

French director Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, 2008) has a new film in the works. Titled Ghostland or Incident in a Ghost Land, Laugier's latest involves murder in a new home. Colleen (Mylène Farmer) and her two daughters turn on each other, on their first traumatic night in the home. As well, Laugier is one of he purveyors of New French Extremity, which include truly horrific films such as Frontiere(s) (2007), Baise-moi (2000), High Tension (2003) and many more. His latest looks to continue the onslaught, with Ghostland releasing first in France. A short Red Band trailer for Ghostland is hosted here. The Red Band trailer is a short one. The clip shows one woman attacked by an invisible figure. Another sister is pulled into a dark portal. The lighting, in the trailer, is very dark as the family struggles with the supernatural. Mars Distribution will host the film's first showing, in France. Though an English language title,...
