Have a Nice Day! (¿Encontró lo que buscaba?) is a Mexican comedy movie directed by Yibrán Asuad starring Álvaro Guerrero and Andrea Chaparro.
Today, Friday, the movie Have a Nice Day!, a film about old people who are looking to regain their youth, always with the friendly air of these “youthful” comedies.
Looking for a lighthearted and a bit (too) silly comedy for this Friday night? Then this is the perfect opportunity to let yourself be carried away along a path of simplicity and good intentions.
Movie Review
Simple, straightforward and charming, especially thanks to this fine actor named Alvaro Guerrero, who alongside Eduardo Minett makes up the curious tandem of maestro-pupil, with Andrea Chaparro providing the feminine balance.

With his animated drama “Art College 1994” about a group of students who contemplate about contemporary art, literature and philosophy in search of their own path, Liu Jian returns to the official competition of the Berlinale, six years after he walked down the red carpet to the Berlinale Palast for his multiple-awarded crime tale “Have a Nice Day”. In this story set up against the backdrop of reforms opening China to the rest of the world, there isn’t much of a plot, since Jian simply gazes back in his own college days, rummaging in the past. Different from anything he has done so far, apart from the animation style which is uncompromisingly his, are the loose plot and a multitude of characters that share almost the same attention.
Asian Movie Pulse was given an exclusive interview by Liu Jian straight after the world premiere of the film in Berlinale Palast.

The quote that opens Chinese director Liu Jian’s shaggy but amiable new animated feature is instructive. “To live, to err, to fall, to triumph, to recreate life out of life” is a passage from James Joyce’s “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,” and indeed, Liu was himself at art college as a young man in the early ’90s, when and where “Art College 1994” is, unsurprisingly, set. The quasi-memoir feel to the movie does have its charm — it’s always a kick to see animation techniques applied not to extravagant flights of fancy but to slices of real, ordinary life — but it’s also its chief flaw. In re-creating life out of life, Liu is quite successful; whether he makes it into drama is another question. Like its characters, “Art College 1994” gives the impression of having just too much time on its hands.

Art College 1994, a deadpan slice of comic-sad social realism from Chinese animator Liu Jian (Have a Nice Day), offers reassuring evidence that although cultural specificities can shape artistic traditions — and fashion and tastes fluctuate — art students are basically all the same and always have been: slovenly, idealistic, and prone to pretentious waffle, especially when lubricated with alcohol. But also, at least based on the evidence of the characters here, reasonably endearing with their guileless dreams of making meaningful work in a world where it sometimes feels like everything has been done. Mind you, others just want to meet romantic partners, make money somehow and maybe go abroad someday.
There’s a sense that this gently meandering, sketchbook-like work is aware of its own cinematic precedents. It certainly seems to suffer from an anxiety of influence as it tries to carve out a space for itself somewhere in the region of Eric Rohmer wistful romances,...

China has had a roller-coaster year so far at festivals worldwide, with high-profile wins and accolades but also more instances of highly disruptive censorship than ever before. In 2019, five international film festivals around have so far ended up tangling with China’s content overlords, who are on unusually high alert ahead of a particularly sensitive political anniversary for the ruling Communist Party in October — the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic.
The year kicked off with a bang in February at the Berlin Intl. Film Festival, which became a showcase of both the country’s highs and lows. China was the best-represented non-European country at the festival, with three entries in the main competition; two in the Panorama section (Lou Ye’s “The Shadow Play” and Xiang Zi’s “A Dog Barking at the Moon”); and Chinese film producer, director and screenwriter Vivian Qu on the jury for First Feature Film.

It was the shot Chinese-American director Ren Wen had spent an entire day of his short 15-day shoot preparing for: a long take in which a supposedly sweet old woman brutally kicks the protagonist of the film out of the car, leaving him to die in the freezing night of a future world where the sun has flamed out.
But when Chinese censors handed “Last Sunrise” back to Ren with the single, vague piece of feedback that the film “showed too much of the darkness of humanity,” he realized the shot had to go. “The problem is they’re not specific, so we just had to cut whatever we thought they might find too dark or violent” — about four minutes of material, he says. More experienced Chinese colleagues had counseled him to cut more than he thought necessary. Not removing enough “shows that you have an ‘attitude problem,’ which will...

Chinese film “Better Days,” about disaffected youth and a mysterious death, has been yanked from the Berlin Film Festival. Sources say that the movie failed to receive the necessary permits from authorities in China, where censorship and cultural control has tightened considerably in recent months.
The picture, by director by Derek Kwok-cheung Tsang, was due to receive its world premiere in Berlin’s youth strand, the Generation 14Plus section. But on Monday, the festival announced without explanation that all four screenings of “Better Days” had been canceled.
Sources with knowledge of the situation told Variety that the film had not obtained the official permits needed from mainland Chinese authorities. While Tsang hails from Hong Kong, which is under separate jurisdiction from the mainland on many matters, the film was made as a China-Hong Kong co-production, which means that mainland Chinese rules apply. Tsang is the son of well-known Hong Kong actor Eric Tsang,...

The New York Asian Film Festival, which takes place every summer, is launching its first winter showcase. The 15-title season runs Feb. 1-10 and claims ‘Crazy Broke Asians’ as its theme.
“The showcase offers an alternate perspective on the continent with films that range from pure entertainment to profound introspection, stories about the 99% and the extraordinary lives of ordinary people, which might be from halfway across the world but are more relevant than ever in our troubled times,” organizers said in a statement.
The season opens with 2018 Korean crime drama “Miss Baek.” It stars actress Han Ji-min, who the festival organizers have also named as the ambassador of the winter showcase.
Most of the remaining screenings are of revived East Asian titles in an array of commercial genres, described as “deeply moving epic of despair, raw tales of the streets, crime thrillers, redemptive boxing dramas, a comic period piece, darkly humorous animation,...

It was a strong year for wicked and weird in cinema—if you knew where to look for it. A strong showing of women directors and larger-than-life females made for some exceptional offerings from Sundance through the thick of Oscar campaigning with plentiful opportunities for resistance amongst a wave of films determined to critique, condemn, and capsize the patriarchy.
A shout out to a handful of exceptional wonders who didn’t make my top 20 favorites but still flit fitfully through my mind’s eye, including the exceptional Trine Dyrholm as Nico in Susanna Nicchiarelli’s Nico, 1988, the cerebral goading of Alex Garland’s Annihilation, Liu Jian’s noir anime Have a Nice Day, Bruno Dumont’s heavy metal musical Jeannette, the Childhood of Joan of Arc, the velvety melancholy of Pawel Pawlikowski’s Cold War, and a couple of femme-centric duos—Kristen Stewart and Chloe Sevigny in Lizzie and Margot Robbie...

Wes Anderson’s “Isle of Dogs” and Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” are two of the 25 movies that have been officially submitted this year for the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the official submissions list, which includes titles from regulars of the category, such as Walt Disney Animation Studios (“Wreck-It Ralph 2”), GKids (“Mirai”), and Illumination Entertainment (“The Grinch”).
The Oscar for best animated feature includes five nominees. Both “Isle of Dogs” and “Incredibles 2” are frontrunners for a nomination at this point, with the Pixar superhero adventure being a likely candidate for a win thanks to its critical acclaim and its more than $1 billion at the global box office. “The Incredibles” won the category in 2004, when the award was in its fourth year. Recent winners of the Oscar include “Coco,” “Zootopia,” “Inside Out,” and “Big Hero 6.”

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced on Wednesday that 25 films have been submitted into the Oscars Animated Feature race, meaning there will be a full slate of five nominees in the category this year. Highlights among the group include “Incredibles 2,” “Isle of Dogs” and “Sherlock Gnomes.”
Several of the films have not yet had their required Los Angeles qualifying run. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process. Sixteen or more films must qualify for the maximum of five nominees to be voted, meaning that this year the submitted films have crossed that threshold.
Films submitted in the Animated Feature Film category also qualify for Academy Awards in other categories, including Best Picture.

At the low-key opening ceremony April 28 of Wanda Studios in Qingdao, Li Guoqi, deputy director of State Administration of Film, made a little speech that had a big message. He told the crowd sitting before him, including China’s top filmmakers such as Feng Xiaogang, Huang Bo and Wu Jing — as well as those travelling from Hollywood — that cinema in the middle kingdom was more than just a bourgeoning, lucrative industry.
Cinema in China, Li said, served the important function of publicizing the ideology of the Communist party and must demonstrate the determination to implement and develop Chinese socialism.
“We must follow the direction of [president] Xi Jinping … to realize the great Chinese dream,” Li stressed in his speech to the assembled movie industry executives and the media.

Both films record strong ratings on the 2018 edition of the grid.
Wes Anderson’s Isle Of Dogs, which opened the 2018 Berlin Film Festival, and Alexey German Jr’s Dovlatov are setting the early pace on this year’s Screen Berlin jury grid.
Screen’s international jury of critics awarded both films a respectable 3.1 stars from a possible 4.
For Isle Of Dogs, two critics, Sight & Sound’s Nick James and Screen’s own, awarded the film a maximum four stars.
Dovlatov also received two maximum ratings, from Nicholas Wenno of Dagens Nyheter and Anton Dolin from Meduza.
At last year’s Berlin Film Festival, only two titles from the Berlin competition topped a score of 3.1 – Have A Nice Day and chart-topper The Other Side Of Hope.
Nine films have registered scores so far on the 2018 edition, which will amass scores for every film in the festival’s competition. Eva (on 1.3) and Damsel (on 1.4) are the two films to register...

Following last week’s Oscar nominations, Fox Searchlight’s “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” led the field of Oscar contenders. Both films showed healthy jumps over last weekend, with Guillermo del Toro’s showing the most strength.
While both films were outgrossed by 20th Century Fox’s “The Post” in much wider release, they did add around $21 million to their impressive totals so far. That’s far above boosts for last year’s “Hidden Figures” and “La La Land.”
