There is a good chance that if Danielle Deadwyler was actually faced with an apocalypse, she’d be able to navigate the chaos of it all with the same poise that she does in “40 Acres.”
At least, her latest resolute-yet-vulnerable performance certainly makes the case for it. Alongside the great Michael Greyeyes, she gives this post-apocalyptic family drama a sense of gravity just as she is able to leap into action when bloody battles ensue.
Though Deadwyler has already gained acclaim for her work on everything from “Till” to this year’s “The Piano Lesson,” “40 Acres” lets her flex other genre muscles while never missing a step in her acting. Even as she’s been outstanding in the series “Station Eleven,” which was also about the end of the world, this newest project is more confined while still having plenty to chew on about civilization’s collapse.

Indigenous horror has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in Canada where efforts are being made to seek out, fund, and promote First Nation stories (see also: Slash/Back and the late Jeff Barnaby’s work like Blood Quantum and Rhymes for Young Ghouls).
With Seeds, we can add Kaniehtiio Horn’s name to the list. The multi-hyphenate is known for her acting work on series like Letterkenny and Reservation Dogs, but for her first feature, Horn takes up writing, directing and starring duties to tell the personal story of a Mohawk woman thrown into battle with a corrupt corporation.
Ziggy (Horn) is a late-twenty something living in Toronto. She’s an ambitious woman – hustling to carve out a spot as a social media influencer with cute videos of her and her cat Potato in between making a living as a food delivery woman.

Dark Winds and Blood Quantum actor Kiowa Gordon and Sera-Lys McArthur (Café Daughter, Outlander) have joined the cast of Many Wounds, a contemporary re-imagining of Lee Tamahori’s ground-breaking 1994 Maori film Once Were Warriors, set among indigenous communities in Canada.
Skye Pelletier (Prey) stars in Many Wounds as Mashka, a young teenager on the cusp of being swallowed up by a colonial system meant to further the goals of assimilation who becomes a warrior to protect his family.
Ojibway filmmaker Jeremy Torrie, who wrote and is directing Many Wounds, and producing the film together with Métis producer Tanya Brunel, said he drew on his own personal, painful experiences growing up indigenous in Winnipeg for the script.

[Editor's Note: This article was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being discussed here wouldn't exist.]
Pet Sematary has long been one of my absolute favorites. It’s one of my favorite Stephen King books, it’s one of my favorite horror films; in fact it’s the film that got me hooked on horror when I was a kid. The story of a father who falls under the spell of an unearthly piece of land and will do anything to restore his family is one that has held my attention and imagination for years. And though the 2019 adaptation didn’t capture my nightmares the way the 1989 film has, I still thought it was a solid effort that would bring the story to another generation of movie audiences.
Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is a reimagining of the Timmy Bateman story that Jud told Lewis Creed in the original book and earlier films. It is a prequel to the 2019 adaptation, which puts the timeline during the Vietnam War.

Dear readers, before I can move forward with my review of We Are Zombies, it’s only right that I inform you that I will be very biased in my assessment of this movie. First off, I’m a big fan of the works from filmmaking trio Rkss, and their debut feature Turbo Kid is one of my all-time favorites. Secondly, I went to college with some of the cast (though I won’t reveal who) and have seen them grow from background to principal characters. Finally, the film was shot around my home city of Montreal and I can pinpoint exactly where many scenes took place.
But I am not alone in my love for both Rkss and We Are Zombies. Its world premiere was chosen to be the closing film for this year’s Fantasia Film Festival. Before it even screened to a sold-out room, there was a...

Valentine’s Day is upon us, and as we’re doing our annual rewatches of My Bloody Valentine (both versions—don’t skimp) or 2001’s Valentine, it’s important to remember that we have another holiday-appropriate horror movie to add to the fun. And it’s a film that happens to be celebrating its 15th birthday this year. Happy birthday to Pontypool, a zombie film that doesn’t get nearly enough attention, despite the fact that it brings a truly unique vision to the table.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008, Pontypool is a zombie movie like no other. Like other recent favorites, it puts its own stamp on the material and creates something memorable. It rethinks the idea of what makes a zombie, taking the things we know and love about the mythology and bending them into a different form to create something unique, while still paying...

The Scene 2 Seen podcast is back!!
Sorry ya’ll. I had to go on a brief hiatus for July. With San Diego Comic-Con, Emmy nominations and my travel schedule, I took the time to sit down brainstorm some fresh ideas to add to the podcast.
I am excited to be publishing one episode a day between today and Friday of this week. Trust me it will be worth it as there are some awesome guests, beginning with today’s episode featuring Plains Cree actor Michael Greyeyes.
Greyeyes is from the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation from Canada has been in the acting business for over 30 years. He feels like he’s just now found his footing with his role on Peacock comedy series Rutherford Falls, which premiered its second season June 16.
Rutherford Falls follows two lifelong friends, Nathan Rutherford and Reagan Wells, whose relationship is tested when a crisis hits their small town.

At the past two Toronto festivals, features from a new wave of Indigenous filmmakers — notably Jeff Barnaby’s “Blood Quantum,” Tracey Deer’s “Beans,” Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ “The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open” (co-directed with Kathleen Hepburn) —found acclaim and went on to connect with buyers and audiences beyond the borders of Canada.
Poised for similar traction, this year’s Toronto slate spotlights the past, present and future of Indigenous filmmaking across the festival’s public, industry and events programming. And just outside the festival frame, the Indigenous screen community is cued for non-stop action.

Exclusive: Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to Night Raiders, a dystopian sci-fi feature executive produced by Oscar winner Taika Waititi.
The debut feature of writer/director Danis Goulet is set in 2043, exploring a future in which a military occupation controls disenfranchised cities in post-war North America. In this world, where children are considered property of the regime which trains them to fight, a desperate Cree woman joins an underground band of vigilantes and infiltrates a State children’s academy, so that she can get her daughter back. A parable about the experience of the Indigenous peoples of North America, Night Riders is billed as “a female-driven sci-fi drama about resilience, courage and love.”
Night Raiders stars Elle-Maija Tailfeathers (Blood Quantum), Brooklyn Letexier-Hart (Burden of Truth), Alex Tarrant (800 Words), Amanda Plummer, Gail Maurice (The Twilight Zone) and Violet Nelson (The Twilight Zone...

When Daily Dead announced that April was to be Indie Horror Month, I was psyched to finally have a chance to geek out about Blood Quantum. This is a fantastic movie that came out a couple of years back, but for whatever reason has sort of managed to stay out of the public eye. Which sucks, because this movie is fantastic, and we should all be watching it.
So I queued it up on Shudder and was astounded to see that this movie was dated 2020. Because the last year has been lost to an endless time vortex and I legit thought that this movie was at least two years old. But whatever! It’s still great and everyone still needs to see it, so here we are!

Apple Original Films continues to expand the cast for the Martin Scorsese-directed thriller Killers of the Flower Moon.
Joining Leonardo DiCaprio are William Belleau (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) and Louis Cancelmi (The Irishman), along with Grammy-winning singer-songwriters Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson.
Set in 1920s Oklahoma, Killers of the Flower Moon depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror.
Belleau will play Henry Roan, an Osage rancher with close ties to DiCaprio’s Burkhart family. Cancelmi is Kelsie Morrison, a local hustler and friend of Burkhart. Isbell, who makes his acting debut in the film, plays Bill Smith, an adversary of Ernest Burkhart, while Sturgill Simpson joins as infamous rodeo champion and bootlegger Henry Grammer.
Belleau was born in Williams Lake, BC, on Alkali Lake, a small reservation also known to First Nations Secwepemc as Esketemc.

The Canadian Screen Awards, formerly known as the Genies (Film) and Geminis (TV), have been around in their current form since 2013. The indigenous zombie film Blood Quantum, currently streaming on Shudder, led the nominations for film with 10 citations but missed both picture and director. In second place, in terms of nomination tally, was Deepa Mehta's gay drama Funny Boy (which you'll remember was disqualified as Canada's submission at the Oscars since almost all of its dialogue was in English). If you watch Funny Boy on Netflix, take note that friend of Tfe Arun Welandawe Prematillek, plays the teacher in the classroom scenes. The awards ceremony on May 20th will be a virtual event.

Jeff Barnaby’s Blood Quantum is a very singular zombie film, set in a First Nations reserve in Canada called Red Crow. Structurally, Blood Quantum follows pretty much two days in the lives of several characters from the reserve, including the chief of police Traylor (Michael Greyeyes) and his relatives: his ex Joss (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers), his two sons from different mothers, Joseph (Forrest Goodluck) and the problematic Lysol (Kiowa Gordon), and his father Gisigu (Stonehorse Lone Goeman). The first part of the story has the characters discovering, in 1981, that there’s something extremely weird going on. Dead animals, like Gisigu's gutted fish or the dog Traylor had to shoot out of pity, are coming back to life. Humans are also affected and some of them are now...

In 2013, writer/director Jeff Barnaby emerged as a force to be reckoned with, an aboriginal artist with a unique, developed vision and fully primed to be the next big thing. And then the years passed.
While Barnaby kept working, his sophomore effort wasn't easy to get off the ground but persistence and determination led to the release of Blood Quantum (review) last year; a bloody, in-you-face zombie movie where the native people are immune to the zombie virus.
Leading up to the movie's home video release, we had the chance to speak with Barnaby about the long road to making his new film, the lack of aboriginal voices behind the camera, and what he's working on...

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Elevation Pictures. Director/writer: Jeff Barnaby. Cast: Michael Greyeyes, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, Forrest Goodluck, Kiowa Gordon and Olivia Scriven. Blood Quantum is a Canadian shot feature from a Canadian director, Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes with Ghouls). The film was shot in the province of Quebec, with help from Telefilm Canada. A film that focuses on Canadian Native issues, Blood Quantum has a unique tale to tell. Told partially with aid from Barnaby and Joe Barrucco's musical score, this feature also offers up a bit of gore, for horror fans. A chainsaw is always handy in a zombie apocalypse. As well, the story focuses on two brothers: Joseph (Forrest Goodluck) and Lysol (Kiowa Gordon), in relationship to their father. One turns into the bad son, while the other struggles to handle his growing family. As the credits roll, most horror fans will...

A visually distinctive, semi-effective Canadian thriller pits a First Nation community against a zombie invasion
Given how movies about the undead refuse to die, a tweak on what’s become a decaying formula is always a welcome surprise, especially if said tweak involves a little more than “what about zombies but strippers”. Back in the 60s, and at rare times since, the zombie subgenre has been used as a way of sneaking social commentary into horror, the set-up of an invading force destroying a community allowing for a range of sly metaphors.

Tagline: "When the Dead Rise Only the Immune Survive." Blood Quantum is a Canadian shot release. From director Jeff Barnaby (Rhymes with Ghouls), this title is moving to Shudder, today, in various territories. The film stars: Michael Greyeyes ("True Detective"), Forrest Goodluck (The Revenant), Kiowa Gordon and Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers. Showing in an unrated format, a Red Band Trailer was release for the film in February. Now, Blood Quantum is available in: Ireland, the U.S. and the United Kingdom. Shudder General Manager Craig Engler has talked about the film and its synchronicity. Engler says of the themes within...

- 28 Days Later Analysis
Jeff Barnaby’s Blood Quantum is an unconventional yet accessible strain of zombie cinema. Instead of keying into 28 Days Later ferocity as patient zero outbreaks spread, Barnaby favors an exploration into one community’s slice-of-life future well after Earth turns apocalyptic. More akin to World War Z or The Walking Dead in terms of accentuating humanity’s ugliest responses to dystopian pandemonium, but not without righteous walker brutality. Characters notch a few “Zombie Kill Of The Week” entries that’d gain votes on over-the-topness alone, not to distract from the indigenous storytelling that makes historical use of Native American perspectives. A fresh take on a festering horror subgenre, albeit an overall formula that’s still familiar on fundamental zomboid terms.
