Adso is late for the next trial phase, limping and William has to wash blood from his face and torso, warning against open support for the arrested 'witch' he loves. Inquisitor Gui has Salvatore tortured to extract confession of black magic for her love and testimony against his mentor Remigio da Varagine, who is forced to admit his part in the Dolcenite heresy and pillaging. William can only doubt the merits of torture-extracted declarations, to no avail, as his order is implicitly linked to the poverty-obsessed sect which turned rapacious. The search for the book, and Dolcino's letters hidden in it, is frustrated as Remigio's discredited, no longer loyal friend Berengario is replaced as librarian by Benno, Anna intrudes the abbey to free from the dungeon Remigio, who admits having betrayed her mother, and the 'witch', just too late. Adso approaches in vain the blind monk, by whom the abbot's blind greed is exposed, another murder follows conform his fifth Apocalyptic warning.
