I think this show is off to a great start, personally, but I'm really just here to ask what is everyone's issue with the ages of the cast? Get with the times people! It's 2022 and completely normal to have kids in your 30s which would make you 50s with teenagers! End rant, but seriously, get a grip!
  • Don't really understand the low rating this show gets. It's got a snappy script, well executed by the cast. It is a very classic sorry but embraced in it's fullness. It's a bit silly and a bit serious, but anyone watching it should never forget that this is intended to be silly. I like it and plan to finish the season as it unveils. I don't expect amazing twists and turns, just an enjoyable ride.

Don't be deceived by negative reviews, this is definitely worth your time! I came close to passing on this brilliant series but glad I gave it a chance. The writing is perfect and love the hilarious quips between the family members. I would have given it a higher rating but wanted more. Eight episodes Isn't Enough, pun intended. The family dynamic is enough to make me go bat cray, too. You will be left wondering if Pat is really cray or possessed. The ending left room for a season 2 but not sure how it could be done.

Judith Light is perfect in the role of the whacky grandmother, and the daughter has an amazing singing voice. As an added bonus, we get to see Greg Kinnear's warm, sweet man cave! He's aging very well. I binge-watched this series in two days, and I'm very picky about what I watch. Trust me, this is good. This is the perfect show to throw a viewing party with friends and cocktails.
  • I'm sure there's something immoral about giving this show a 9 but it had me laughing for all 8 episodes and I can't find any fault with it.

Most shows nowadays seem to start with a couple of good episodes, then have a stretched-out middle and finally a good finale.

Shining Vale keeps up the intensity all the way through.

It's wickedly funny. Well-acted. Has a clever story.

It also has non-stop swearing and is slightly insane.
  • ...esp. The ones that didnt watch more than 3eps.

I usually dont judhe before the full season, but I enjoyed todays episode so much, I checked the ratings... I just dont get it. I am a massive horror fan and also watched about everything that has come out in the thriller-, sci-fi, mystery-, suspense,- genre in the last decade as well. And I gotta say "shining vale" has one quality that makes it one of the very few shows i look forward to watch every week: non-predictability. YES, the elements of it are superoverdone: posession, haunting, sterotype teencharacters, drugabuse etc... BUT they do it so twisted and over- or under-the top... at least I can´t see it coming. Or at least not totally. They also have a way of misleading the viewer with sound or trope- cues (which admittingly annoyed me in the beginning, cuz it felt like thats all that will happen. Which may be why many dont stick with the show....)... which by now I love, cuz its fun when sth. Actually DOES happen, just not the way u thought exactly.

I dunno... I am just rly tired of beeing in the minority of what shows I like these days...

One last thing: the comparison to "American horror story" is valid as any show compared to another.

(and I think I get where ppl are coming from, but there are so many points to make on how they are nothing alike from theconceptual pov to the vibe and structure.... I wont even get into any of that.) but from the start it reminded me a lot more of "santa clarinets diet" and "ghosts" than AHS.

I did not expect much because of all the negative reviews. I decided to watch it anyway because there's not much else on. I found it entertaining. I always liked Greg Kinnear and Courteney Cox. . As per other reviews, I did not notice much with the age different. If they're in their 50s ,they had their kids in their 30s So I don't see why all the complaints? Just give it a try and don't expect much. It's a lighthearted dark comedy and I'm looking forward to season two. If you are offended by bad language , definitely don't watch it.
  • I'm so surprised at all the bad reviews, esp from critics. I think this show is fun! I don't like horror and I think the scary stuff is just right. Funny writing and the family dynamic is interesting. Let's see, what was that other Courteney Cox comedy that was totally panned by the critics but the viewers liked? Oh yeah - "Friends."
  • Courtney Cox and Greg Kinnear play so well off of each other. I have LAUGHED OUT LOUD at Kinnear's one liners in every episode.

Definitely an R Rated Horror Comedy. I think the FBombs make it even FUNNIER since they say things that you might actually say in real life.

I hope there's a Season 2. We signed up for STARZ just to watch this Show. SO FUNNY!

Update: We were SO EXCITED FOR A SEASON 2!! It is so incredibly funny. We love the dark and twisted sense of humour. This is written so well and the lines delivered by Courtney Cox & Greg Kinnear are OUT LOUD Funny. They have a wonderful chemistry.

Sure it's crazy but we need a little crazy ! I tell anyone that will listen how funny it is. This coming from someone who hasn't watched a sitcom since the 80's. (It was probably Friends!). A MUST SEE.
  • The comedy horror genre is my fave and this is a great installment! Great to see Mira Sorvino and Courtney Cox and all the characters have great chemistry!

The kids are great. Funny and creepy. The jokes are laugh out loud and i have to watch it with the lights on! 😂WAAAAAY better than this rating!
  • I have read the reviews and am shocked how low they are. I think it's a great series and cast. I know everyone is different, but as for me I really like it. I rated a 7 because I didn't like the religious bashing/mocking in the show.
  • Love it so far, interested to see where it goes. Side note, I have a filthy mouth so the f bomb doesn't bother me at all, but the frequency and timing of the f bomb in this show ruins it. Comedic timing is imperative to make it funny or drive your point home, it just sounds crass without the benefit of wittiness. I don't know if this is the writers fault or the actors delivery, but that's my only con so far.
  • Honestly this is laugh out loud hilarious! I almost didn't bother after reading negative reviews and low ratings. It's a very dark comedy and the humour is spot on. I won't go into the story as there's different layers that are hard to accurately portray in writing. Just watch it. Glad a second season has been commissioned. Interested to see how this continues. If you're looking for something full of depth and serious then this isn't for you. If you're looking for a laugh out loud comedy of a woman being possessed by a ghost and slowly transcend into madness then you'll enjoy.
  • Season one is GREAT!! I HIGHLY recommend it. Courtney Cox almost never lets you down in successful TV shows and movies. Mira Sorvino is a treasure and very under appreciated. Her performance in season I've is the highlight of every episode. Greg Kinear is always a good bet as well. The actress that plays the daughter has serious acting chops with nuance and timing. The son isn't given much to do and is sort of an after thought.

The show has many references to The Shining, is both eerie and funny.

Unfortunately season 2 is garbage. Though it hasn't ended yet every episode is worse than the one before. Episode one was decent but after that downhill. I'm on episode 5 and I hope it either gets cancelled or season three is nothing like this.
  • I really want to like this show more... I do, but it's not happening. The family is as dysfunctional as possible... Nobody believes one another so the story goes nowhere... The son is one of the most exceptionally annoying characters I have ever wanted to hospitalize.... Even the dog, somewhere along the way, turns me into a volcanic ball of rage. 1st season.... Everyone except for the mother either dismisses what is happening all around them, or try to Encyclopedia Brown the hell out of it. (It's award winning aggravating.) So, of course, decided to continue the show's aneurysm inducing story line by starting the second season. Yay... the mom thinks that she is just crazy and now another character is beginning to see/hear things.

The acting is great.... The storyline... Not so much.

I must admit I wasn't all that into it at first. But if it was on I'd let it sort of play in the background. After doing that a few times it started to grow on me. Now I look forward to new episodes. Some of the complaints I've seen on here are pretty harsh. I don't think they are fully warranted but I admit it's not everyone's cup of tea. However, it might be yours if you give it a chance. I'm glad I did. By the way, love Judith light as Courtney Cox's mom. The family is a mess but entertaining.

The only issue I have is looking at Courtney Cox. She looks like a Stepford Wife gone bad in so many ways. Greg Kinnear is awesome in his role. I just wish they had cast someone else to play the role of Patricia.
  • I've seen 7 episodes and this shows awesome! Its a slow start but its worth the investment. I appreciate when a show takes risks instead of relying on a formula, and this show isnt predictable. Its pretty funny. The mystery is engaging. The characters are cute. It has a Silent Hill theme of not knowing if the main character is crazy or if theres a supernatural threat. Its my new fav.
  • I'm not really that into comedy, and I loathe anything even remotely affiliated with "Friends." That said, the acting, writing, and comedic timing in this is great -- especially the scene references to The Shining. During a couple of those, I laughed so hard I snorted.

Shining Vale is a guilty pleasure of mine that no one knows about but me. It's smart, and it understands and respects horror fans.

Here's something I'm curious about though. Why is Courtney Cox in this and not the creator Sharon Horgan? She is an actor who would be perfect for the role, though perhaps they were hoping for more star power.

I love this kind of show. We all know the 'ghost story' thing. This is a bit American Horror Story a bit sitcom. We all know the tropes, that's ok. It's a fun ride. I want to ask the 'people' that don't like this show and all the other shows/movies they dump on; 'Do you want people to have no entertainment, do you want no different point of view on a familiar story. Does anyone else feel like the bulk of the bad reviews are just trolls that don't like anything on principle. This is an ok show if you like this type of story. If it's not for you. Watch something else. Let other people make up their own minds.

    FIRST SEASON : 7,1/10

    1) SHINING VALE= MARRIED WITH CHILDREN + AMERICAN HORROR STORY, first season, the one with the haunted house.

Of course, SV is not as brilliant and hilarious as MWT, neither scary as first season of AHS. Still, it's entertaining, there are some funny moments, some intense moments, the pace is kinda fast, and you will not get bored. Nowadays many tv shows bore you to death. SV is recommendable for any person who wants to watch a good comedy/horror show ( Not many of them). It is well directed, too.

    2) Every character here is likeable (well, except the one who shouldn't be). I am sick and tired of watching unlikeable characters in tv shows, thank God that is not the case here. Cox and Kinnear did an amazing job. So did the other actors. Their daughter and son, etc.

    3) Still, this is not a masterpiece, it's not a 9/10 or 10/10 for sure.

It's interesting enough to watch it but you won't remember it after a month tops. Viewer doesn't bond much with the characters. It's a little bit superficial and shallow. Lower your expectations and you will enjoy it.

Not impressed by the ending but i am gonna watch the second season to see where it goes.

    SECOND SEASON : 6,9/10

Second season is somewhat chaotic and messy, still funny though and if you liked the first, you are gonna like it too. Maybe if you pay attention, it's not that confusing. In any case, i enjoyed it. First one was a hommage to AMERICAN HORROR STORY, this one is more like Rosemary's Baby. This is not exciting neither MUST SEE, but if there is a third season, i will watch it.
  • The set-up is very standard - and has been since the 1980's: Yuppie parents want to get away from it all and reconnect as a family so they bring their disaffected city kids to a spooky old house in the country. The problem is Mom is hallucinating... or is she?

Courteney Cox and Greg Kinnear are both fast approaching 60 - Cox's face shows every day of it - and way too old to be playing the parents of high school kids. And after two episodes, we don't know any more about who these people are and why we should care about them than we learned from the trailer.

Frankly, I am mystified - the show is not funny, it's not scary, the characters are caricatures, and if they all get killed and eaten by the ghosts, so much the better. I walked away from the first two episodes thinking, "Well, there's two hours of my life I'll never get back again."

I rated this a 3 out of 10 because I don't want to completely torpedo it too soon. Maybe it just got off to a bad start. But I'm really not holding out much hope for this one.
  • Absolutely surprised that this is so good. It is hilarious, the writing is fantastic and I think the casting is superb, it couldn't have been better. I don't know why anyone would give it so few stars because to me it was one of the funniest TV series that's currently being aired by far.
  • Quite addictive tasteless show. Not that scary, not that funny but still quite entertaining. At the same it reminds me a Santa Clarita diet which was good and bad at the same time. At least it's definitely something different from any other current shows airing.
  • I was very much looking forward to this new series, especially after seeing some of my favorite actors from the past in this cast. I simply couldn't waste my time after about 20 minutes of the first episode. The characters aren't likable, the potty mouth dialogue is juvenile, and the characterization of depression in general is over-the-top. I'm really sad to say that this is a no go for me :(

After watching the first two episodes I am ready for more. It's not fantastic but definitely watchable.

Honestly, I think it is Courteney Cox's best work. I was never a Friends fan and everything after that, other than maybe Scream, was worse.

The writing is witty, dry and funny. Pretty much what you would expect from Sharon Horgan. I can't say that it is spooky but I don't get the sense it is meant to be. It is more of a quirky, silly and suspenseful story about a midlife crisis.
