Back in 2022, when I was reviewing the first season, I wrote “With the exception of the mid part and a few episodes close to the end, “The Rising of the Shield Hero” emerges as an excellent title that manages to differ from the plethora of similar anime, due to its overall context.” Unfortunately, the second season seems to be more like the mid part of the first, with the majority of the elements that made the title unique, missing from it. Let us take things from the beginning though.

Note: This article is an offshoot of Variety Intelligence Platform’s special report “The New Face of Content Piracy,” available exclusively to VIP+ subscribers.
It’s easy to assume that what’s driving illegal consumption of film and TV is as simple as viewers wanting to watch popular titles without paying for them. Indeed, that was essentially the case for film in 2022, with the year’s highest-grossing titles largely overlapping with the most pirated films, according to exclusive data piracy-focused research firm Muso shared with Variety Intelligence Platform.
Films’ ease of accessibility on streaming also played a notable, albeit smaller, role. The most pirated film of 2022, Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” has only been available to stream in the U.S. thus far via Starz, whose domestic subscriber base is a fraction of the size of platforms like Disney+ and Netflix. Piracy of the film therefore remained elevated throughout the year.

Spooky Season is in session on Hulu, as the streaming service is adding a ton of horror-themed content this month. But not to worry, there’s plenty of other non-spooky new movies and shows to watch, too.
In the horror realm, director David Bruckner’s new (and well-received) take on “Hellraiser” arrives on Oct. 7, while horror films ranging from “Annabelle: Creation” to “The ABCs of Death” to “Monster House” to “The Exorcism of Emily Rose” arrive throughout the month.
In decidedly non-scary new arrivals, the entire series of “Schitt’s Creek” comes to Hulu on Oct. 3 after streaming on Netflix for the last few years, while the Hulu original film “Rosaline” – which tells the “Romeo and Juliet” story from a different point of view – streams on Oct. 14.
Other noteworthy library titles include Wes Anderson’s “The French Dispatch” on Oct. 25 and David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” on Oct. 31.

Sharpen your teeth, because the highly-anticipated anime adaptation of "Chainsaw Man," Tatsuki Fujimoto's award-winning and extremely popular manga series of the same name is arriving on Crunchyroll next month. Originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump, the "Chainsaw Man" anime is directed by Ryū Nakayama, and tells a bleak and nihilistic story about Denji, a teenage boy living with Pochita, a painfully adorable dog err ... chainsaw devil as the two harvest devil corpses to repay the debt of his father. After Denji is betrayed and killed he makes a contract with Pochita to be revived as a "Chainsaw Man," which gives him the ability to spawn chainsaws out of his body, including a horrifying metal head with a chainsaw on top and sharp teeth to help him gnash demons.

Medieval themed anime have given us some of the most iconic titles over the years, with series like “Berserk”, “Scrapped Princess”, “Goblin Slayer” and others being the first that come to mind. Will there be a Goblin Slayer Season 2? While only the anime production committee can answer that question definitively it’s possible to analyze the chances of a second season. Popularity and the resulting financial numbers are the biggest factors influencing a decision and it just so happens the sales numbers for the Goblin Slayer Blu-Ray/DVD box sets have just come in. While not critically derided in Western reviews like The Rising Of The Shield Hero anime, Goblin Slayer suffered from some mixed reviews early on since rampaging goblins raping human women was a prominent part of the story.
