Country Strong
(2010)

Fantastic ensemble film - terrific singing
Very solid and enjoyable, and also heart-tugging story about fame, burnout, up-and-coming rivalry, love, fear.

The singing is solid from everyone, and although I am not a country music fan, I am a fan of the music in this film, it is beautiful.

Garrett Hedlund in particular is outstanding as a friend/lover/musician. Gwyneth Paltrow is solid and her role does not overshadow the other performances in the piece - very much an ensemble. Tim McGraw is scary-good.

This movie was so much more complicated and real than I expected. Fantastic.

The Magic of Ordinary Days
(2005)

Well crafted, subtle story
Lovely movie, subtle and well acted in major and minor roles. Funny at times, the way country characters can be funny once you know them. Beautifully filmed, and gorgeous music.

I loved the slow telling of the story. How the characters were kept apart by philosophy (city vs country), nature (hurt vs shy) and interests (world vs home). I loved how so much was shown in body language, and how her prejudice was erroneous, although not malicious, and not entirely tolerated by Ray despite his patience. I loved how much he loved her - and understood that she disliked herself.

The downside of the movie is the internment camp and POW story. I agree with others that it was a distraction and not entirely believable, and not necessary. I fast forward through that section.

Not a movie for Van Damme fans.

North & South
(2004)

simply excellent
Excellent rendition of Elizabeth Gaskells book.

The production is authentic - set in an impressive, historic working mill - with Edinburgh filling in for Manchester (Milton). The camera work is fluid and modern, and the story is told easily, not stilted, like some period dramas.

The acting is superb - the lead characters John and Hannah Thornton, Margaret Hale, and union man Nicholas Higgins are so natural that you forget that you are watching a movie, and get simply enthralled in their story. The supporting characters are also strong making this an unexpected gem of a movie.

Some of the dialog is taken directly from the book; some scenes are new but feel authentic. Overall I think that the story is very well told - the story of owner vs. worker in the industrial revolution - as well as an unexpected romance between social classes.

Timeline
(2003)

surprisingly interesting despite previous criticisms
I avoided this movie at the cinemas because of general poor reviews online, and in the papers - however I thought the premise of the movie was interesting, and after a couple of years I decided to check it out for myself. Reviewers on this site have given it 1 - 10/10.

I found it interesting as a movie, with likable characters, including Paul Walkers portrayal of Chris, Marek, the physicist, and the corporation bad guys with/without a conscience. The movie moved along quickly, cutting from past to present just at the correct moments to heighten the drama. The production quality was good. Time travel/worm hole science is left for scientists to understand, and an explanation is not attempted in the movie, for which I am glad.

I don't know why some of the main characters were changed from the book, however the adaptation of a book to movie has to be a difficult thing, and if you take this movie at face value it's pretty entertaining.

Correlli
(1995)

interesting and gritty
very interesting prison drama, with strong stories, and many great character portrayals.

It is mature and often ugly, realistic and very surprising for television. The lead characters generously share the glory as other stories come to the forefront, and are true to themselves - the ending is honest and atypical for North American audiences.

It is impossible to take your eyes off of Deborah and Hugh, they are so good together.

I wonder if the series continued without the presence of Hugh Jackman?

Underrated.
