Jefferson in Paris
(1995)

An interesting American history movie
My interest in seeing this movie was to compare it with the recent CBS mini series, "Sally Hemmings," which I recently saw and enjoyed. This movie was slow moving and not nearly as interesting as the mini series but it did provide some supplementary information about Jefferson that was not in the mini series. The movie, of course, was written from Jefferson's perspective while the mini series was written from the perspective of Sally Hemmings. The photography in the movie was wonderful as well as the acting. The last part of the movie, was by far the best.

Rear Window
(1998)

A well done remake of a Hitchcok classic.
This version was quite a bit different from the 1954 version but equally good. More time was given to developing the lead character, mainly by showing how he became paralyzed. It was great to see Christopher Reeve again and I hope to see more of him in film roles. A possible good story for him would be a "male version" of "Sorry, Wrong Number".

The Accidental Tourist
(1988)

A Really Moving People Story
I waited almost 10 years to see this movie and was sorry that I waited so long. This was a human interest story about people going through crises in their lives told in a humorous but moving manner. The movie would appeal to people who liked ":The Big Chill," "On Golden Pond," "Ulee's Gold," "As Good As It Gets", and, probably, "Feeling Minnesota" .

A Perfect Murder
(1998)

A very good mystery thriller, at least as good as the original.
This great thriller needs to make no apologies to the original Alfred Hitchcock classic. Michael Douglas and Gwenyth Paltrow were just as good as Ray Milland and Grace Kelly. The changes gave the story a more contemporary feel. For some reason I haven't seen "Dial M for Murder" showing on TV for many years so the story should be reaching a new audience. I saw the original several times, and liked it a lot, but had forgotten the story line.

Wag the Dog
(1997)

A comedy that wasn't very funny.
This movie was one of those movies that I thought I would have to like because the critics, with whom I usually agree, said it was so good. Other examples of critics praising boring movies are "The Last Emperor", "The English Patient", and "Pulp Fiction." The acting in "Wag the Dog" was great but good acting cannot subsitute for a boring story line.

Hard Promises
(1991)

A pleasant romantic comedy with good acting.
The movie was about a woman's ex-husband coming to town the day before her second wedding to stop the wedding. Similar stories have been filmed many times but the acting made all the characters believable and likeable. Sissy Spacek and William Peterson were very effective in the lead roles and all the supporting players were right on the mark. People addicted to a lot of non-stop action, rather than talk, should look elsewhere.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes
(1971)

Entertaining 2nd Second Sequel to a Great Movie
This was an entertaining movie but it, of course, suffers from comparison with the great "Planet of the Apes." Look for TV soap star Eric Braeden of "The Young and the Restless" in a very important supporting role.

Ulee's Gold
(1997)

A good family story set in Florida
People who are addicted to a lot of action and special effects will not care for this movie. Those of us who like stories about people who have problems and deal with them will like the movie very much. Peter Fonda and the other cast members performed well. My only complaint, a small one at that, is that the movie could have moved a little faster. The photography was exceptional and there was a lot of interesting information and scenes about bee-keeping.

Friends at Last
(1995)

A well made and moving TV movie
This is one of those TV movies that was definitely of theater quality. Kathleen Turner, a once very popular movie star who has been missed, was at her best as a woman trying to come to terms with her divorce and years later reestablishing a relationship with her ex-husband as a "best friend". The movie was such a pleasure to watch I hated to see it end.

OP Center
(1995)

A TV movie of theater quality
I liked this TV movie better than Tom Clancy's other book-into-film movies, "Hunt for Red October" and "A Clear and Present Danger." The extra screen time possible with a TV mini-series makes a mini-series the best way to film a long and complicated book. The acting was good and the photography and special effects were great.

Rock Hudson
(1990)

Much about his sexual preference, but little about his great movie career.
It would have been interesting to see more about his movie career and non -sex personal life. Nevertheless it was an interesting movie and the cast performed well. Marc Christian was painted in a more favorable light than the press did at the time of Hudson's death and the lawsuit. George Nader, who received most of his estate according to some accounts, was not in the movie at all.

Rebecca
(1997)

Famous story well done. First to show Rebecca alive.
This was an excellent production of a famous story. The acting was just as good as the previous versions and the photography was the best, far better than most theatrical movies. One thing that made this version special was seeing Rebecca and hearing her in a flashback sequence.
