Journey to the Center of the Earth
(1959)

This is definitely a keeper; a family film in the best sense.
I saw this film as a teenager; thanks to cable, I have seen it many times since and have enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. The performances are charming and believable, including Pat Boone's character, the script is witty, the color photography is fine, and Bernard Hermann's score is, as always, beautiful and memorable. It may not be Citizen Kane. but for entertainment value alone, I give it a 10!

Vertigo
(1958)

Eternally haunting movie, with perfect performances.
I first saw this movie the year it came out; I was 14. I must have seen it at least a half-dozen times since, and it still intrigues me. I thought from the beginning that it was a masterpiece; what took the U.S. critics so long to figure it out? (The Europeans were way ahead of us!) How strange, also, that Kim Novak's performance was trashed by critics; now she is praised. Also, what a tribute it is to her performance and Stewart's that they are totally believable as lovers, though he's a good twenty-five- to thirty years her senior. And Bernard Herrmann's music is so dominant a factor, without overpowering the performances or the story. This, on a scale of 1 to 10, deserves a15.

Heart of Midnight
(1988)

I also thought this film received unfairly low ratings.
This film has haunted me since I first saw it on cable. The acting is excellent, especially Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the story (from the author of The Color Of Night) is creepy and intriguing. I would give it a 7 1/2
