Congo
(1995)

Excellent B-movie!
This movie must be appreciated for what it is- an excellent B-movie with a great cast that chews the scenery and spits out preposterous dialogue. The Cast has all of the credentials. Tim Currey, Ernie Hudson, Delroy Lindo, Laura Linney, and Joe Pantoliano are all capable of fine dramatic work. That isn't what is called for here. Bruce Campbell and Joe Don Baker set the tone for this campy-action-comedy. This is a good excuse for good actors to flex thier overacting muscles.

Lots of fun

Sarah McLachlan: Video Collection 1989-1998
(1998)

This collection runs the gamut.
Sarah McLachlan's music is excellent. That said, her videos range from beautiful versions of her songs to videos that make you cringe from thier absurdity. It seems that the early videos suffer from the high concepts that inspired them. On the other hand her later videos are very well done and are very complimentary to her music.

The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century
(1996)

The Forgotten War
This series chronicals the first world war from start to finish. Using first hand accounts(via letters read by voice actors) and rare footage, this documentary is very fair and thourugh. I particularly liked how the makers explained the events of The Great War in the context of history as it related to europe's past and future (WWII). At times, the letters can be quite moving, bringing the viewpoints of unsung heroes and victims as well as political leaders to the forefront in a very personal way.

Outside Providence
(1999)

Nice Movie-- Great Soundtrack
This movie is yet another attempt to depict the free living days of 70's teens (See also Dazed and Confused, Detroit Rock City, and to a lesser extent Boogie Nights). The characters are typical, like the wisecracking cynical father, the picked on friend, and the underdog struggling to make his way whom we can root for. This wasn't a bad movie if you are looking for a few chuckles and are a fan of the Farelly Brothers. You may, however, be surprised by the heart that this film shows in the relationship of the broken family wounded by the untimely death of the mother.

The best part of the movie for me was the soundtrack. Threaded throughout the film was nothing but the best music from the time. Nothing but the heavy hitters of the mid-seventies like The Who, Paul McCartney & Wings, Yes and many others. It truely sets the mood for the film and reminds the watcher how powerful the music of the time was.

All in all, it is worth a viewing, although other seventies retrospectives leave the viewer more satisfied. 6 out of ten
