Unsolved Mysteries
(1987)

What a fantastic show
Watching this show on reruns makes me miss the late 80s Primetime. Not all of it was sitcoms, and this show put other reality shows like Cops and AMW on the map. The show flourished thanks to the straightforward delivery of Robert Stack. No other host could narrate re-tellings of missing persons and alien abduction and still hold the viewer captive with intrigue. I still enjoy watching reruns of this show on Lifetime, but it certainly seems odd that even some eighteen years later, there are still some unexplained death/missing person stories that are STILL unresolved. I have often wondered if these cases have just not been updated properly since the show went into syndication. For example, every once in a while an episode will air but without it's appended update report. I would always tune in every week in hopes of some bizarre story sandwiched between a bunch of stories of missing loved ones. My favorite would have to be the episode on the Queen Mary. That whole episode was so spooky even today I get a little creeped out by the reenactment. I still get misty-eyed when I watch the lost love updates. One of the best updates on lost loves would have to be World War II story of Fritz and his mother taking in both American and German soldiers, sharing Christmas dinner in peace. That one always gets to me.

I knew the show was starting to decline in ratings when the "special correspondents" had to come on the show to deliver updates that didn't really involve them at all. Not sure where they were trying to go there, perhaps they were trying to be like America's Most Wanted. It sure seemed that way the last few years before the show got canceled. The show was in its prime in the 88-89 season. Great topics, great recreations. RIP Robert Stack, we really miss you.

E.T. and Friends: Magical Movie Visitors
(1982)

Reissue this!!!
I taped this special long ago when it aired (or repeated) in the fall of 1982. It is a documentary featuring B movie sci-fi films very similar to It Came From Hollywood, also featuring Dan Aykroyd. The documentary hardly features E.T. at all, and was so titled to capitalize on the recent blockbuster sales of the movie. These are both very entertaining and should be released on DVD. Both documentaries feature some of the same sci-fi movies in their reviews. Too bad I no longer have that tape because it's been 22 years since I first saw it and I remember really liking it. If you can find it, watch it because it is simply great.

Paul McCartney & Wings - Rockshow
(1980)

The Definitive Wings Show
This video has been out of print for over 10 years. It shows up from time to time at Beatles trade shows and can be found in older video rental stores. Hopefully this will be remastered for DVD someday and include extra moments from this 1976 Seattle show, such as Ringo Starr greeting Paul on stage after the encore.

My videotape leaves out several songs present on the complete Wings Over America cd. This is odd because there is a trailer at the end of the tape that includes "Lady Madonna," which was cut from the 1981 Thorn/EMI release, which I believe is the last commercial release of this video. A few years ago VH-1 aired the show in its entirety the week "Flaming Pie" was released. Sir Paul has gone back and remastered a few Wings cds in the new 5 channel stereo format, so hopefully this will finally become available again. In the meantime, try to find the double cd "Wings Over America," which is also out of print but not hard to find.

Blood Rage
(1987)

Typical 1980s Horror Flick
I had completely forgotten this movie until I saw it at the local video store. I first saw this at the movie theater around Halloween 1987, and it was shown as "Nightmare At Shadow Woods." I had no idea it was aka "Blood Rage" and released in 1983. I did think the movie looked a little dated even for such as small gap between 1983 and 1987. I guess the film company wanted to bring it back under a new name to cash in better than its original release. Great gore scenes inserted between some pretty horrifying acting. A weak plot can destroy a movie, but for horror flicks it doesn't matter now does it? Recommended for those who favor more gore over suspense.

The Six Thousand Dollar Nigger
(1978)

Hilarious film ruined by lousy directing
This film has some really funny lines in it but is hard to appreciate because of its poor handling of the plot and also the bad editing job of the film! There are many subplots that aren't needed in the film, scenes that never develop into anything significant later in the movie. Someone earlier mentioned the same scene of a view from an apartment window used from the director's previous film. This scene (lasting all of about thirty seconds) seems to have been left out in the new video version of the movie. It was intact on an older video release, on a rental videotape. Anyone know why they cut this short scene out where Steve is shown the amenities of his new apartment??? The film was not prepared properly for video. Lots of camera shots are cut off, and for the most part of the movie you can only see partial head shots in closeups! And for one more regret, the end was so abrupt if I had blinked I would have missed it!!! Nevertheless, I still enjoy watching it and recommend it.
