The Prosecutors
(1996)

Worth a Try
Picked this up out of curiosity at the video shop and was pleasantly surprised. I though the acting was good, the characterisations well based and the story credible. I liked the drama and tension between what many women must feel when they have a satisfying career and all supports are lost through a senseless act. The moralistic and righteous stance is really challenged and I think many will accept the decision Rachel takes. While not top shelf, this movie does make one think.

Arlington Road
(1999)

Scary Stuff
Why do I get the feeling there is an element of truth in this movie? I found the plot to be plausible and compelling and the build up to the climax terrifying. With modern technology and a twisted mind, a character such as Tim Robbins could pull such a stunt off! I realise there were a few imperfections in the movie, but, overall had me sitting on the edge of my seat and feeling quite disturbed at the end. One of the few movies that had me thinking of the disadvantages of a society such as the USA where gun control is out of control and law enforcement seemingly powerless to defend the majority of citizens. Remember the line - "if you can name a suspect, the rest of us will feel safe"

Saving Private Ryan
(1998)

Very Powerful
I am one of those baby boomers who arrived just after WWII and escaped Vietnam. So this movie seems to me to portray the horrors of war in such a realistic way, that it has changed my view of conflicts such as this forever. Who cares whether it was accurate in terms of the weapons used or from a historical persepective. The first 30 minutes show what war is really like and that for me was the power behind this movie. I am sure people will talk about this movie for ever!

Mars Attacks!
(1996)

This is so bad it is funny!
A movie that is not for anyone who loves a good sci fi flick. The acting and plot is so outrageous and the lines so bad, that the movie does have its funny moments. At least millions weren't spent on computer graphics and cheap theatrics. Nevertheless, I think I will have to watch it again just to make sure I really did not like it the first time!

Notting Hill
(1999)

A fine fairy tale romance
Just delightful. This is one of the few movies where you can let your heart escape with Hugh Grant and dream and live the impossible dream. A humble, if not quirky, bookseller falling in love with a high profile beautiful actress. Has all the hall marks of one of those great English movies, not falling into true comic proportions, never a drama. It is what one could call a "nice" movie that was thoroughly entertaining and delightful.

The Long Way Home
(1998)

Heartwarming
At last a movie that deals sensitively with the relationship between a widower (recent) and his children and why those children choose a course of action which does not always include the widower (Jack Lemmon). The fact that he chooses, on the spur of the moment, to go to California to see someone he has not seen for 50 years is testimony to the fact that he believes his life is being led by others and not himself. Part of the self realisation comes from a young woman who nearly runs him over and it is through her that he gradually realises that he is not old, he does not have to retire and that he has a purpose after all. A touching movie with nice warm overtones. If you are a child with an aged parent, it is a movie which one should see so that you do not make the same assumptions!

The Gingerbread Man
(1998)

Could have been better
I am a fan of Grisham novels. Seeing this, I thought the movie would be terrific, especially with the cast. However, I was so disappointed. Much more could have been made of this and while suspenseful, it did not quite produce at the end of the day. It was entertaining without being dramatic. Could have been better!

Ricochet
(1991)

Only Just Suspenseful
A lot more could have been gained from this movie without resorting to crass and over the top scenes, particularly those in the prison. Whoever designed the escape needs their head read? Talk about fanciful! > Somehow the plot just does not come through, although the actors try to pull it together with some good acting, particularly Lithgow and Washington. Leave this one on the shelf.

Analyze This
(1999)

A Good Laugh
I must say I was a little apprehensive when renting this as I did not quite know what to expect. However, both my partner and I laughed a lot and felt that we had really been entertained. I thought the acting was terrific and the role reversal with DeNiro the comic and Crystal as the straightman an intelligent way to portray the characters. Well worth watching and a little unusual.

Rush
(1991)

An emotional drama
I think I hired this movie because I noticed that Eric Clapton had scored the soundtrack. I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the movie, the acting, although the dialogue and diction were hard to pick up at times, and the overall theme. The little twist at the end was a nice way to finish and does remind a viewer to concentrate earlier to ascertain the reason why! Can Sam Elliott get a deeper voice than this!

The Deep End of the Ocean
(1999)

Long and drawn out
Promises a lot but does not deliver. Casting terrible with Whoopi Goldberg totally miscast ( what has a black, gay police officer got to do with the central plot has me beat!). Actors try hard to deliver the emotional torment and frustration at not locating their kidnapped son but, in the end, the standard of acting does not portray that feeling of helplessness and despair. The older son, Vincent, frustrates the life out of the movie and is portrayed as a rebellious individual with little or no sympathy for the plight of the parents. Overall, very disappointing.

True Crime
(1999)

A well worn path
This movie treads a well worn path. Someone sitting on death row waiting for the good guy to bail him out and prove his innocence. This movie is passable. Not as good as others and lacks some of the high tension drama that could have been generated with this plot. I thought the acting was a little sub standard and could have been better. Overall rating only fair.

Enemy of the State
(1998)

Fast Action Packed Thriller
This movie is much like David Baldacci novels; fast, action packed and riveting. I found the plot plausible, and the acting sufficiently laid back to give the film credibility. The tense relationship between Dean and Brill provides a good balance to the frustrations earlier experinced by Dean in not knowing what the hell is going on. An exciting film and one not to be missed.

Y2K
(1999)

Y2K humbug
Why they called this movie Y2K is beyond me! What starts out as promising loses a lot as the movie winds on. The plot and the acting is slightly second rate and I found that by the end the countdown did not engage the viewer. Tying the plot to a Columbian drug lord at the end was just too much. Passable.
