Moro No Brasil
(2002)

Where have all the ideas gone...
*Warning: Slight spoilers* Alright, Buena Vista Social Club was a huge success... one most wouldn't have expected. So it's quite obvious for some people to try to get a piece of this success themselves - the sudden appearance of various Latin American music films seems to be the best proof. Unfortunately, "Moro no brasil" seems to be one of these tries. I'm sure Mika Kaurismäki is a huge fan of Brazil music and only made this film to celebrate his love for the country and its music. But having seen Buena Vista Social Club I just found far too many coincidences for just calling it pure chance. Well, apart from the better plot line in BVSC - in "Moro no brasil" the plot is purely based on the journey undertaken by Mika Kaurismäki, which starts with very traditional (and for most European ears unusual) music in the middle of the country and comes to the "common Brazil" sounds of the coast towns at the end. And I must say, the second half of the film was really enjoyable - great percussion music, moving on to Salsa and mainstream sounds and also covering modern aspects like Funk music from the ghettos. IMHO, Mika Kaurismäki tried far too hard being a second Ry Cooder and making this film the Brazil version of BVSC so it lost most of its (possible) charm. In addition, there weren't enough strong characters with interesting stories like in BVSC - or they weren't introduced well enough. Overall 6/10.

The darker side of winter tourism
The film is about a young woman who makes a living working as a waitress in a winter tourism region of the Austrian Alps. Not far behind the beautiful and relaxing atmosphere of "winter wonderland" lies Evi's reality of hard work and long hours in an unfriendly working environment. She finds happiness in alcohol and meaningless one-night-stands.

Only her little daughter gives her the will for ending this, but she doesn't quite succeed yet...

Quite a sad film actually, as you will notice most of the story line happens everyday in reality in thousands of villages living of tourism. Also sad to see about the results of alcohol abuse. Not a film for a night out with a date I should think...

Mexico is Corona and Corruption
We don't get a lof of Mexican movies here in Austria, so this gives an interesting view on that country:

After his wannabe-girlfriend is found naked dead, a 16-year-old boy has to face the macho-tradition of getting even with her murderer. A victim for the blame is quickly found in a traveling criminal who gets on very well with the women in the village. Only the local senior inspector is still searching for the truth...

Great characters, especially the inspector who has to deal with his own corrupt colleagues, and in every scene there is at least one corona bottle! Apart from that average story, I'll give it a 7/10.

Bend It Like Beckham

Nice film for a night out...
The girls are cute and clever, the guy is tough but caring, the story is well-known but still good, the jokes are British - what else can someone ask for in a film? Even for someone not football-obsessed like me a more than enjoyable... good and clean entertainment for a night out with the girls...

Great Austrian Cinema lives!
Despite the title, Austrian film is not going to die - it lives! and this film shows it again.

Being based on an excellent book, which also won the German Krimipreis 1999, it gives an great film, whereas the satire and sarcasm even gets better in the film. 100% black humour and 100% real, life can't be any more bizarre or funny as in this story of a former detective, now ambulance driver, trying to find the murderer of a nurse and later a fellow ambulance driver.

The cast contains some of the best Austrian comedy actors, especially actress Nina Proll shows once again her young talent. Karl Markovics acts best of all these people with the more serious and deep-minded character of the wheelchaired former angel of death.

Saving Grace

an excellent surprise
one of these movies where you don't hear a lot about it and then it comes in like a bomb... the little alternative theater in my town is being sold out every single night for this movie! everybody comes in - from the grungy 14-year-old youngster to the silent 80-year-old ladies - and they all love it! just like Waking Ned Devine this movie will be a huge success on video I guess because nobody will be able to stop laughing... :) great recommendation!

Parting Shots
(1998)

sad... really sad...
what went wrong with this movie? - some great actors, interesting plot, superb music... but what came out was just plain boring. well, take away the fact that Chris Rea really is no actor at all, it must have been the really bad directing and camera work... even a student movie might contain better pictures... I liked Ben Kingsley - as always he shows a great piece of acting here. I just wonder why he would work with such a horrible director who seemed to just finished his first TV movie... it's really sad because chris rea brings over some decent black British humour but still, something is badly missing...

Runaway Bride
(1999)

Not even worth the video tape...
This is probably the worst ever film I have seen with such a famous cast. Already the story plot is more than stupid - why should a journalist take any kind of interest in a woman just because she dumped a few men? It's just so ridiculous and boring that you want to switch off after a few minutes. Jokes are missing, there is no real romance at all, you really ask yourself why so many plastic had to be produced for the video tapes of this movie - thats a case for Greenpeace actually!
