Carrie
(1976)

a horror classic regardless of what people say
Brian DePalma directs Stephen King's first movie adaptation about an awkward girl who one day has a period in gym class. She is the butt of everyone's jokes because she is ugly and unpopular. The problem gets deeper at home because her mother, madly played by Piper Laurie, is an overbearing religious nut. Carrie descovers she has telekenetic powers which means she can move things with her mind. Once the big dance comes around, the popular girls get up the ultimate prank for her and make the most popular guy in school her date. You might as heard about the pig blood scene but see it yourself. She gets even with everyone who crosses her path. I don't think it is the greatest horror film ever but I think that Carrie appeals to everyone who has ever felt like a outcast. Sissy Spaceck is great as the tortured Carrie and John Travolta shows up as the boyfriend of one of the pretty popular girls. Scares do exist in this movie. ***1/2

Coven
(2000)

companion piece to American Movie
Coven is the film that the strange hick from American Movie was desperate to make. It horribly follows a drunk who is trying to get sober. Through the suggestion of his friend he goes to a recovery group but it turns out they are a coven. The dialogue is and film is laughingly bad. American Movie is good but this is bad. Zero

The Devil's Advocate
(1997)

not Pacino or Reeve's best
The Devil's Advocate is about a hot shot lawyer played by Reeves who never loses a case. He was raised by a strong religious woman and is married to Charlize Theron. While he takes on a sexual harassment case with a minor and wins it he gets the offer to join Al Pacino's firm. Everything seems to fit together. Sexy women and money are around but strange things start happening which is very reminiscent of Rosemary's Baby. Soon Keanu learns the secret about the firm and who Pacino really is. Pacino is ok in this but I think the studio strived too hard to make this a blockbuster. It's predictable and not very suspenseful. **

The English Patient
(1996)

decent.has the epic feel to it but suffers from boredom
The English Patient is a multi layered story about a mapmaker (WHO'S PROFESSION IS QUESTIONABLE)who crashes into a desert and becomes badly burned. He is nursed by Juliete Binoche and tells her the story about how he loved Kristen Scott Thomas. Once he tells his story, more and more details come out. Ralph Finnes is good as the disfigured man and there is a lot of sentimental moments. The problem is that it is hideously boring. Some of the scenes feel like they drag on for eternity. Overall if you like romance tales and epic dramas you should check it out. Willem Dafoe is great in this as the thumbless man on a mission. The World War 2 backdrop works well and the cinematography is good. I don't think it was as good as people made it out to be but regardless it was ok. I'd hate to give it a low rating. I'm sure IMDB purposely doesnt post negative reviews but I have to give it **3/4.

Johnny Mnemonic
(1995)

too stupid for anybody
Reeves is carrying something in his head that he needs to deliver and there is some stupid plot about dolphins. Ice- T and Dolph Lundgren are along for this hellride and that is saying a lot. This is a grade c sci-fi hybrid that tries to go for the techno angle but winds up acoustic. Johnny Mnemonic is a terrible movie that offers no thrills or anything new that you haven't seen. *

Bram Stoker's Dracula
(1992)

Coppola's great stake at the horror legend
This version of Dracula stays more true to the book than any other form. Gary Oldman plays the role of the famous undead vampire who goes to London searching for his lost love from a previous life. He captures the lawyer fiance of the girl and tries seducing her herself. Winona Ryder plays Mina with a beem of sexual energy in her eye. Once her friend is bitten The vampire hunter played by Hopkins is brought in. The sets and the acting are good. The effects are wonderful. Coppola does a great job directing this. ***1/2

Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III
(1990)

leatherface isn't even scary anymore
In this entry there's some more savage deaths to unwilling travellers. This time leatherface isn't even scary. He is a buffoonish cartoon who stumbles around unmenacingly. Instead of the old man and the family, who perished in the second TCM we have a complletely lame hillbilly clan who pose as much threat as a toothbrush. You the horror viewer's know the concept. Victim gets trapped in the hellish home of these weirdos and if they survive they have extreme mental problems. Unfortunately if you like horror films or the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, this one will leave you with a stupor of mental problems. 1/2

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2
(1986)

TCM should have been left alone and no sequel be made
The original Texas Chainsaw was one of the most shocking and innovative horror films ever made and along comes this entry. I've seen this one many times before I saw the first because it scared me. Leatherface is the perfect fear because he is complex in his simplicity. He is a slow child minded redneck who only knows about killing. His real face is never shown and he wears a mask of stiched human flesh. This is more of a campy remake of the first. A radio host gets a lewd phone call from drunk teenagers on the road and in the process they get killed by the Sawyer clan and it is broadcasted. The DJ goes to Dennis Hopper who plays his role as if he was having a midlife crisis. Leatherface and co come after her in order to silence her. A new addition to the cannibal clan is some steel plated weirdo. Apparently the hitchhiker from the first is now a corpse that the Sawyers drag along as if it were real. It can be called very dark comedy because of it's outrageousness but in the end Tobe Hooper is just ripping himself off. Some decent chainsaw moments and over the top gore. **

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
(1983)

a great ending of a series
As a kid I watched Jedi the most out of the trilogy and always enjoyed it. The Star Wars films are extremely entertaining and are a fun series of films. I enjoy Jedi and can get past the fact that the Ewoks are cutesy overdone creatures. In this episode the robotic duo goes to Jabba the Hutt's palace and attempts to get Han Solo in his carbon frozen state. Leia is hot in this. I always thought she was very hot in her golden bikini. Once Han is rescued they get briefed on a mission to shut down the shield generator for the second Death Star. Luke must comfront the evil Darth Vader and he faces Vader and the Emperor. The Emperor was always a fave character of mine and after seeing Phantom Menace, I enjoy his role in this better. Han, Leia, Chewbacca and the droids go to the planet Endor which is a huge forest with small furry primitives. The Vader/Luke/Emperor scenes are awesome. This has it's weak lines and Solo is almost a different character but overall it is effective. I'm not about to place the order of quality in the Star Wars series but Return of the Jedi is a great ending for a trilogy. ****

Addams Family Values
(1993)

not better than the first
Contrary to what people think, I dont think this is better than the sequel. The Addams have a new baby boy and the kids go off to camp. Uncle Fester is being used by Joan Cusack as a nutty nanny who wants Fester offed so she can get his money. Hokey and lame. If the Addams are so weird then how come nobody goes to their house and messes them up? *

The Addams Family
(1991)

doesn't hold up
If you enjoyed the Addams Family growing up then there is no point in watching it again because you will be disappointed. The movie revolves around the weird Addams clan and a scheming banker who wants the Addams fortune. The banker's scheme involves passing a goonish thug off as the long lost Uncle Fester. I had the hots for Christina Ricci and still do. Everything about this is goofy and I dont think it holds up well with time at all. **

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein
(1948)

good mix of horror and comedy for the family
I saw this as a little kid and enjoyed it because it managed to show most of the classic horror monsters and had the comedy of Abbott and Costello. The duo are baggage clerks and the crates contain strange things. Dracula shows up and wants to revive the Frankenstein monster. Soon the comedic duo are faced with Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man. Good clean fun for the family. ***

Un chien andalou
(1929)

oh i was moved by a screen dream
Pure madness cannot be crtiqued and surrealistic dreams cant be described. Surrealism is about reality and insanity so it is nearly impossible to write about what Un chien andalou actually means because it's goal was to not make any sense. Brilliantly in the end, the abstract form comes together. The film opens with a man sharpening a razor and then slicing a ladies eye as she looks on to the clouds. A young beautiful woman watches possibly a lover dressed like a nun fall off his bike and awake in her bed which different clothing. His hand is covered in ants and he and the girl watch a girl dance around a severed hand in a crowd. The man grabs the lady and making a pass towards her and as she runs from him, he is seen pulling two pianos filled with dead donkeys. Filled with complete crazy scenes and really out there for it's time. This movie should be watched and open for interpretation by anyone with a mind. Brilliant camera work and great examples of messe en scene. ****

Bronenosets Potyomkin
(1925)

classic Soviet montage
This is one of the true greats. In the height of the Russian Revolution, a battleship filled with sailors feel poorly treated by the officers. They are served maggot filled meat as a dinner and when they work hard and get nothing but disrespect out of it, they turn against the officers. The film works well because you care about the characters and most of their names arent even given. The battleship arrives near Odessa where a crowd of people wave them on. What follows is one of the most intense scenes ever filmed. The Officers massacre people. Baby carriage and steps, mother clenching her dead child. These are images that are real and get stuck in your head. Go out and rent this. If you cant appreciate silent films then I guess you have no business being on this site. ****

Scream
(1996)

the beginning of the end
Scream is a pretty good horror movie but the problem isnt in the film it lies with the treatment of how the american public overhyped this movie and how suits milked it for all it was worth. One scream makes fifteen other imitations. It is a self aware version of teenagers who know how to survive cheesy horror movies. The film opens with the impressive Drew Barrymore scene and soon we are taken into the life of Sydney prescott. A masked killer taunts her as every cliche in the horror vault is examined. It's ok and if people accepted it for what it was instead of making it overblown it would be long remembered. Rose McGowan is very sexy in her role. Too bad she gets a stupid death. ***

RoboCop
(1987)

cool ultraviolent sci fi
Robocop is one of those movies that kids weren't allowed to see but wanted to and did anyways. In Detroit a cop is killed by a drug lord and is brought back by a greedy company as a cyborg programmed to fight crime. The sleaze that killed Murphy has an devilishly programmed robot built by the same company pose a threat to him. The guy who plays the villain was very good and freaked me out as a kid. It's weird to see him on that 70's show. Peter Weller does a decent job as robocop and Murphy. Some of the movie doesnt hold up wiht time but the effects and violent action still hold up. The scene that always freaked me out was when the red head dude is hideously mutatedby toxic waste. Cool for action/adventure and sci fi fans.***

Suspiria
(1977)

great horror flick
Suspiria is about a dancer who goes to a prestegeous dance school where strange deaths have been occuring. She senses something there is wrong especially after she gets sick someone dissaears. She begins to hear voices and then learn the dark secret of where she really is. The terror is displayed very well by Argento and there are some cool dark scary moments. If you are a fan of horror and haven't seen it check it out. ***

The Last Detail
(1973)

great Nicholson movie
Nicholson gives a remarkable job as a Navy officer who has to escort a young Randy Quaid to jail. Him and (sorry I forgot the black actors name) travel and instead of giving Quaid hell, they try and give him a last fun time. The dialogue is sharp and all the actors do a great job. There are alot of cool memorable scenes and I think more people should check this movie out. It is rather excellent. ***1/2

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari
(1920)

german expressionism at it's best
Cabinet predates all the horror films and films with plot twists and takes you into the mind of Francis brilliantly without knowing where you are going. It opens with two friends telling tales of the weird and Francis goes on to tell a story after he sees the beautiful Jane wandering. His tale involves the town fair and how a scheming mad doctor has a zombie-like person who he can command and tell fortunes. Things are not what they appear to be in this world. The sets are remarkable as it the design of everything. It is a classic. ****

The Deer Hunter
(1978)

one of the greatest war movies
The Deer Hunter follows four steelworker friends on their enlistment and throught the horrors they experience in the Vietnam War. They spend most of their time drinking and hunting deers. Hunting deers is serious for the DeNiro character and he carries the hunting mentality and his marksmenship to his being of a soldier. They have a big bash celebrating their departure and they dont even have the slightest clue whats going to happen to them.

When they reach Vietnam it is a hellride for them. Dead bodies are everywhere. One of them loses movement of his legs and when they are captured they are forced to play a sadistic game of russian roulette. DeNiro and the injured friend return home and face the aftermath. Walken is one of the friends turned soldier and he gives a great performance. His character remains in the war and is affected heavily by it. Meryl Streep and they guy who plays the handicapped veteran (john savage? i didnt look at the cast) do great work. Solid direction. This is a fantastic war movie that depicts realistic friendship. ****

The Godfather Part II
(1974)

one of the best sequels
Godfather part 2 is a worthy successor to the original. It has a flashback sequence that chronicles the young Vito Corleone, magnificently played by DeNiro, coming to America and getting into crime. Then it shows how Michael runs the business and how it turns into something big. The FBI starts a trial in order to bust Corleone as the family builds tension. Pacino is explosive as Michael who's marriage is failing because of the life. He makes a hard choices in order for whats best regardless of who gets hurt. I really dig this movie. Duvall, Diane Keaton and the whole cast goes a great job. Coppola is a cinematic god. ****

Mean Streets
(1973)

classic gangster flick
Mean Streets is DeNiro's first collaboration with Scorsese. It involves the followings of four friends who lead lives in crime. Charlie is greatly played by Harvey Keitel and he is the most likable character because of his Catholic morals. DeNiro by far carries the picture as Johnny Boy, the fast talking in debt hustler who is always getting into trouble. This is a strong film and stands the test of time. The Jumping Jack flash scene with DeNiro is as good as it gets. Great direction and acting. ****

O Brother, Where Art Thou?
(2000)

visually stunning and goofy fun
This stars Clooney as a Dapper Dan hair obsessed prisoner who with his two dim witted sidekicks escape from prison. They have a long cool journey which is loosely based on Homer's Odyssey. There are a lot of cool comedic moments but personally I didn't like the musical numbers. The acting was cool and quirky and the supporting characters made the movie. Overall I think it was a beautiful movie but not one of the Cohen brothers best. ***

Girl, Interrupted
(1999)

not a female One Flew Over the Cukoo's nest
Girl, Interrupted isn't a terrible movie but it tries so hard to be edgy. A beautiful and talanted actress like Winona Ryder hasnt had exposure for years because of her choice of movies like this. This might have been a labour of love for her but to me it was just a hokey movie. Ryder stars as a troubled girl with a personality disorder who goes to a mental institution. Inside she connects with the world of the inpatients and she forms a bond of friendship with Angelina Jolie. Jolie- well the verdict is still out on her. She might have deserved her Oscar but I dont think she'll ever live up to it. She is more of a media skank the same way phony people are. The acting is OK and some of the scenes are OK but it's underworked. **

Dark City
(1998)

decent sci fi
Dark City is about a town without sunlight that is a huge mystery. A man cannot remember his life and struggles to find answers. There are tons of nutty side characters such as Kiefer Sutherland and William Hurt. The big threat comes from a group of dark bald guys who want people's souls. The plot is incoherant but it is visually stunning. Jennifer Connolly is hot. Movie has some definate boring parts but it comes out not being the worst out of the sci-fi genre. **1/2
