Traffic
(2000)

Proving that multi-narrative can work extremely well!
The triple narrative of Traffic works well providing an insight into the drug culture that lives around us. Soderburgh's unique way of capturing the events in three places using colours: yellow for Mexico, Blue for Michael Douglas' story and normal colours for Don Cheadle's story.

I am a big fan of Soderburgh's work: my favourites being Kafka and The Limey. Both are originally in approach using experimental techniques to capture nice visuals.

The usefulness about having multi-narrative is that you never seem to get bored it is always switching. There were times however when I got abit confused about hat was happening.

Great acting by Benecio Del Toro, Don Cheadle and surprisingly Catherine Zeta Jones who puts in a great performance.

If you want a really interesting journey into what is going on in the world concerning drugs watch this. If you want to see a film with guns and drugs dont watch this. 8/10

The Limey
(1999)

Stamp/Soderbergh are both perfect!!!
This film is such a pleasure to watch. The whole idea of the low key drama set in LA works perfectly. Soderbergh creates a whole new way of vision which is exciting and slightly disturbing e.g the flash-backs and the flash-forwards. There are alot of silent shots of Stamp doing normal things:- unpacking, smoking etc. It is eerie.

The story itself is a simple one of revenge which Stamp goes all out a produces an excellent performance. Peter Fonda is a great villan who Stamp takes revenge upon. Luiz Guzman is also good in his role of aid to Stamp.

My favourite part of the movie is when Stamp goes to the warehouse to find Terry (Peter Fonda). Prior to this there are excellent visuals of him walking to the warehouse: they really show the plus points of having Stamp in a movie. The whole sequence is wonderful- even the decking he recieves is done stylishly well.

Go rent/buy this film . Just be patient and get used to the style of the film and you will not be sorry. 9/10

The Thomas Crown Affair
(1999)

A remake that is better than the Original!
The Thomas Crown Affair excels in being far better than the original. The camera-work, directing, music, acting. Almost everything about it has been pushed up at leat a notch from the 60's version.

Casting Brosnan in the lead was a good idea, though he does seem to effortlessly move through the film. Almost a James Bond like character without the gun. Russo shines as the insurance investigator sent to trap Mr Crown(Brosnan) using her charm and her lovely figure. I think this role is perfect for her: she is so suductive and sexy.

As a male i loved it. My Girlfriend however thought it was only quite good. My comments through the film probably didn't really help (mostly on Russo). And the sex scene certainly caught my attention. It is the first sex scene McTiernan has done.

The script was witty, but what impressed me was the superb choice of shots McTiernan used:- the smoothness of the it all, the way everything ran perfectly. It suited it very well. Music was also great by Bill Conti it captured the essence of the glossy thriller.

Watch The Thomas Crown Affair then watch the original and make up your mind. I think you will agree with my points. Fabulous film making 10/10

Blade Runner
(1982)

Do Not Run From This Film!
This is one of a few excellent Sci-Fi films of the 1980's even 'Return of the Jedi' didn't fill its potential. Blade Runner is superbly captured by Ridley Scott in a future that is polluted and filthy: the whole world is perfect for this dark thriller about Deckard a blade runner who must destroy four replicants. It is a simple story filled with great visuals and great acting by Harrison Ford.

Although sometimes the atmosphere gets to cloudy - we see less and less. SImliar to watching fireworks through fog. However the script is also great offering Rutger to shine as a replicant who battles to the bitter end with Deckard.

Watch the film and enjoy it. You will enjoy it and remember an englishman directed it:- need I say more. 10/10

Mr. Majestyk
(1974)

Its not great but its good
I was very reluctant to watch this film. Late friday nite channel5 (it shows garbage if your are not from the UK). However I strangly connected with it, I was fixed to it, what was going to happen next? Will they? wont they?

Charles Bronson has never greatly shined as an actor. But this performance sees him put an effort in and act.

So after succumbing to Bronson acting well and the solid story. I tried to pick apart the directing which ofcourse I could not. I siutes the film:- there are a few dodgy shots were the camera looks like it is about to fall off the car but apart from that it was fine.

Well Okay - if you like the 70's action movies, a bit of violence some chases, then you will like it. 7/10. I have seen him in worse films. I have seen better however.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
(2001)

Enjoyable mixture of fantasy and comedy
HP is very enjoyable. It has several features that make it a good film; the story- which is about magic, evil and friendship. This story works really well- I had read the book before watching it, and thought that it was a very good adaptation.

The stars of the movie, though Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are not very impressive the rest of the cast are wonderful- especially Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, and Zoe Wanamaker. (It was good that all the actors were British).

The chess scene was a highlight of the film, also the twists and turns of the plot were done well.

I feel that the use of bluescreen effects and CGI were overly used, some of the effects were not good and you could tell that they were not outside etc. Other than that piont I cant complain, though I do think that younger people will prefer it more, maybe under 16.

I have thought a long and hard about what rating to give it, there are a mixture and positives and negatives. Children will really enjoy it. *******7 out of 10*******

East Is East
(1999)

I really enjoyed this film.
I really enjoyed this film; it was funny, dramatic and very watchable. I have seen it a number of times, but dont get bored. I am not a Pakistani or a Muslim so I cannot comment on whether the film handle that part of the film well. The acting was first class, I especially enjoyed the characters Ella and Aunt Annie. One of the best British film os the 1990's.

Duel
(1971)

Tense Thriller Of The 70's Kind.
I really enjoyed this film, it is exciting, fast, and frightening. The directing was done really well. But I couldn't help noticing the number of mistakes in the film, well, not exactly mistakes. Let me explain; when Mr Mann is walking through the cafe in to the toilets you can clearly see the shadow of the camera for nearly the whole of the sequence, then there is the fact that when he is in the phone box, which is one of the most thrilling parts, you can see a figure in the reflection jotting down notes, though she/he moves when Mr Mann continues the telephone call. I still throughly enjoyed it. If you want an easy to follow thriller then this is for you. 8/10.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
(2001)

Never make a movie from a video game; like The SS Titanic it will sink
Tomb Raider joins the ranks of the many movies that try and remake a successful game; eg. Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros. and Mortal Kombat. I had high hopes for the film, it sounded promising with Simon West directing, and a wide range of cast. With the success of Con Air, how could he go wrong.

(This review does have some parts that may slightly spoil the movie if you have not seen it).

Easy with a story that is too sentimental and convoluted, a bad guy that seems apathetic, and special effects that come close in the worse special effects award 2001, coming closely to The Mummy Returns. The polystyrene rocks falling on her were probably the most danger she was ever in. Then there are the parallels that are hard not make: Raiders of the Lost Ark and James Bond. There is a sense that she is never really in danger, or is going to get hurt, only when she holds a knife by the blade, duh!

ANGELINA JOLIE has the aristocratic english accent perfect, but her acting as the all action, kick ass, armed to the teeth girl who takes no ****, is just rather dull, as the film reveals she is actually a loner who wants her Father back, what about her Mother?

The locations were promising; Cambodia, Iceland and England. Iceland filming was boring, the trek across the waste lands, Cambodia; the jeep was good, the walk around the temple, the child giving her strange mystical advice, follow the butterflies was not, but atleast the little girl had a good laugh. The sets were so set like, they had no realism, or gripping images.

Contrary to the views you now must have on me. I do have some good points about the film. IAIN GLEN, even though he came across as a dull enemy delivered his lines well. Angelina's chest gets a special merit award, for having to cope with a padded bra, and all those stairs! The action sequences were good, especially the bungee ballet sequence which is the movie's highlight. Simon West's directing certainly was not dull when it came to action: the bike, the jeep, the bungee, the huskees, the shower scene! CHRIS BARRIE as Hilary the butler was a good character, as the comic input. DANIEL CRAIG as the good/bad character Alex West, was ok, his accent was good. NOAH TAYLOR as Bryce, was the most certain and interesting character. LESLIE PHILIPS part was disappointing as it was about 5 minutes of screen time. The music was great, it helped the action, and made certain scenes very exciting.

Overall a movie that will go to number one in the UK as it did in the US. The sequel will almost certainly be made. What can I say, other than that it had an excellent advertising campaign that has worked drawing in huge audiences. MINDLESS ENTERTAINMENT- is the key word I would give to this movie, it is'nt terrible, and it is certainly not an award winning masterpiece. I would give this 6 OUT OF 10!

A Month by the Lake
(1995)

Redgrave and Fox, what a combination!
A Month By The Lake, a wonderful little film. Set at the eve of World War 2 in Italy at Lake Como. A love triangle occurs between Redgrave, Fox and Thurman. The comic aspect is done very well, notible for its Tennis and boating scenes. But this also has a sad aspect as the Major(Fox) thinks that Miss Beaumont(Thurman) is in love with him, but is really only having a little fun teasing him. The lake is so wonderful and so are the photographs that Miss Bentley take.John Irvin gives good direction to the film which again adds effect and beauty. One of my favourite films it captured me. A film of very rare excellence with three top actors of past and present. 5 out of 5, wonderful.

The New Avengers
(1976)

Steed, Purdey and Gambit on top form. the 70's rock.
The New Avengers, seven years after the original series stopped. Three instead of Two, 70's instead of 60's, Flares instead of slacks. Those are the differences in the two brilliant programmes. Steed is now in his 50's and fatter and slower, Gambit is a suave action man played by Gareth Hunt with excellent wit and charm, He is the action man of the series partly because Steed is old. Purdey the new girl played by Joanna Lumley looks stunning as a sexy super spy who combats crime with Gambit. Sexual tension also builds up between them. 26 eposides of pure action, drama, comedy and style. The first eposide is one of the best, with a guest appearance from Peter Cushing, battling against Neo Nazi's in Scotland. Yet the last eposide was one of the worst in the series, filmed in Canada the team has to keep a hand print safe on the top of a car. A sad demise of such an excellent series. Guest appearances from Peter Cushing, Lewis Collins, Martin Shaw and others. Cool action scenes and car chases. Laurie Johnson provides a superb incidental music score. Brian Clemens makes the most of what he has and makes excellent stories and narrative. This is a very good series that has turned into a cult classic, a classic in any crime and action fans list. 10 out of 10.

The Persuaders!
(1971)

They persuaded me!
Lord Brett Sinclair and Danny Wilde are drawn together by Judge Fulton to use there wasted talents and use them for the fight against crime. Top notch action and comedy the Persuaders were the oddest of couples that got on very well. Lord Brett Sinclair and aristocratic, suave and stylish with clothes to match was the true English Gent. Danny Wilde a millionaire with wit and a very large wallet. Cars, Girls, Guns and one liners was the best combination of this powerful suspense series hat ran for only 2 years, it is a real shame. No one has ever come close to the partnership of Moore and Curtis. Sinclairs lucky number was 7 and he drove an Austin Martin, a pre-James Bond role which made him an international success. Everyone with a thing for action and suspense must watch this.

Genevieve
(1953)

Stop it both of you your hauling like broligans!
Such a classic in film history. Genevieve is a 1908 Darrack(car), the McKims are on there annaul Car Rally from London to Brighton, only this time on the way back to London, its a race against ex-friend Ambrose Claverhouse. Classic incidents in which form a race where anything goes will be firmly in your mind for ever. Dinah Sheridan plays an excellent Wendy who thinks its absolutely absurd bouncing around in these old cars. Kay Kendal plays the trumpet playing model Rosilind Peters who also thinks that its all getting rather silly, she has also bought her dog along for the ride. Kenneth More plays the sarcastic and terrible flirt Abrose who is determined to win. John Gregson plays the moody, long suffering and jealous Alan who also wants to win the race. I promise that this will have you in tears of laughter, a splendid film of a brilliant era of English film making, no film of this type has even come close. This is my favorite film, 5 out of 5.

For Your Eyes Only
(1981)

The Best Bond EVER...
A solid James Bond film that goes back to proper action and espionage. Espionage which slowly got pushed out of the bond films of the 70's especaily in Moonraker which is one of the most ridiculous Bond films ever made. Roger Moore on top form, sauve and cool he battles for ATAC, a Royal Navy machine for tracking their ships, in the wrong hands though in this case Kristatos an illegal dealer to the Russians. A brilliant climax with a traditional raid by Bond and a small elite team of experts. A wonderful Bond Girl Mellina Havelock, has brains and a Crossbow, which is quite a rarity. A sudden death of Blofeld in the opening sequence, with Bond dropping him into a chimney stack,is qiute a shocker. Shot in lovely locations including Italy, Greece and London. The best Bond film since From Russia With Love, and the best of all the Roger Moore films. I love this film and must be a must for all action fans let alone Bond fans. The tension is terrific, you will be on the edge of you seat while bond is on the edge of a mountain. 5 out of 5.

Oh! What a Lovely War
(1969)

Oh, What a lovely film.
A unique satire which expresses the fact that war is bad and does not solve anything. A unique film directed by first timer Richard Atttenborough. Film entirely on location in Brighton it shows the Smith family enrolling and slowly getting killed off. A star studded cast in the greatest musical satire ever, reason it has feeling, emotion and laughs and shows an accurate portrayal of life for soldiers in World War 1. 10 out of 10, for real film fans.
