Kyôfu kikei ningen: Edogawa Rampo zenshû (1969)
Bad, and not in a good way
A horrible waste of time. I'm all for non-linear narratives, but this made no sense and never paid off. Characters have beards or an eye patch in one scene, then not in the next. You can't tell which characters actually exist, or who they are to each other. There's no coherent visual style, or rhythm, or any logic whatsoever.
The Butoh dancers are probably supposed to be "artsy" or intense, but they just come off as silly, capering about with great commitment and no discernible purpose.
While there's some resemblance to the Dr. Moreau story, this movie is too goofy to be shocking, and too disorganized to ever build up any fear or potency.
What you do get: a random, unintelligible story, bad special effect violence, and a fair number of bare tits. (That actually makes it sound better than it is.)

Pretty Ugly People (2008)
Unfunny & unwatchable
I went to see this today at the Laemmle Sunset. I like Missy Pyle, but 15-20 minutes in and she had barely appeared. What showed up instead were an entirely implausible group of "friends" spouting banal, dreary quips about how they still happened to be connected--which I did not buy in the least.
I was pleased that the cameo from the always-marvelous Allison Janney came within those first 15 minutes. It wasn't well-written, but she did the best she could.
After a joke about black people being noticeable in the West because there are so few of them was made not once, but 3 times, I walked out. Life's too short for bad work like this nonsense.

Painfully bad writing, not even rendered bearable by Philip Baker Hall and the delightful Amy Hill.
There's no consistency to the world or reality to the characters, who all exist as unmotivated puppets of the writer/director's trite imagination. Scenes begin randomly, go nowhere and end for no reason, other than convenience; any interesting proposition (a partnership, a duck at a 12-step meeting) is quickly quashed by denials trained out of a good writer in Improv 101.
The whole thing feels like a bad college play, in which street people are the wisest of us all. Feh. Rent "Harry & Tonto" instead.
