Don't Say a Word
(2001)

Intense movie
This film kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire two hours. I had heard this film was comparable to "Ransom", which I liked, but I thought this movie was even better. This has a more intricate, but believable, plot and keeps you on edge throughout. Between the mental patient and the bad guys, you never knew what to expect next. I rate this show 9 out of 10.

The Prince of Tides
(1991)

Don't judge it by its cover
I avoided this movie because I did not care to see a romance involving Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. When we finally rented the movie, it turned out to be so, so much more. An incredibly intense film. I was never of fan of Nolte, but what a tremendous performance! It moves me to tears every time I watch this film. I am amazed the IMD reviewers give it such a low rating.

Parenthood
(1989)

Realistic and hilarious view of parenthood
I saw this movie when it first came out, bought the video, and have watched it at least a dozen times and am not ashamed to say it is one of my top five all-time movies. The movie is so true to life about the joys, the struggles, the emotions of being a parent, yet does it with some absolutely hilarious scenes. There is a great cast and the story flows so well, there are lots of laughs with never a dull moment. I see my siblings and my parents in these characters and the "roller coaster" analogy of life describes my wife's and my outlook too well! What tops off this great movie is the ending. I am frequently disappointed at how many comedies are very funny early, but once the gags are used up, struggle to find an ending. The end here is both surprising and extremely satisfying. As my kids get older, problems of their adulthood loom on the horizon, I am reminded of Jason Robards' words near the end of the movie about parenting..."It never ends, it never ends!

The Loneliest Runner
(1976)

Never humiliate your kids
I first saw this movie as an immature college kid and was amused by the subject matter. I saw it again a few years later, this time as the father of young children. What a different perspective. Watching the manner in which the mother humiliated this poor boy, I vowed NEVER to embarrass my children, especially in front of their friends. My heart ached for the boy in this movie. A great movie for parents to watch - I wish I could run across it again sometime on the tube.

When a Man Loves a Woman
(1994)

A very powerful movie
A couple friends had told me this is not a good movie, but after watching it for the first time last night, I disagree. It is a very moving and thought-provoking film. The movie dealt realistically, to me,about the effects of alcoholism in a family. How very sad it was to see the look on the older daughter's face as she dealt with her mother's alcoholism. Andy Garcia, the husband, loved his wife deeply and his despair was powerful as his marriage and family fell apart. Meg Ryan was great - she is my favorite and is always lovable. However, the way she treated her husband late in the movie angered me after all he had gone through when she was drinking heavily early in the movie. Perhaps I am looking at it only from a husband's point of view. That's what was captivating about this movie - besides the alcoholism, it touched deeply on marital and family relationships - "I'm worried...worried you don't know how much I love you," Garcia tells the older daughter. At times the dialogue got a little long and I wondered a bit how good this movie was. But in the end, my heart ached for some happiness for the characters, which proved to myself how moved I was by the film.

The Untouchables
(1987)

Ruined by ridiculous scenes
I was just checking out the IMDB list of top movies and was shocked by how high this movie ranked. Everyone has their opinion, but what did people see in this movie?

Don't compare this movie to the old TV show - the TV show was realistic. Kevin Costner is ridiculously over-dramatic playing Elliot Ness. The movie is filled with long drawn-out scenes, most of which are totally stupid. The scene in the train station with the baby carriage going down the stairs is one of the silliest things I have ever seen in a movie.

Typical is the scene where Sean Connery scares the bad-guy into a confession by riddling an already dead guy full of bullets. DePalma seems to like to use these unique scenes to get your attention. But the sum total of his work usually adds up to stupid movies.

The Wedding Singer
(1998)

Enjoyable throughout!
This is a cut above Adam Sandler's other goofy movies. He and Drew Barrymore have great chemistry. She is totally charming. And what a delightful ending! I could watch this movie every night and be entertained by the music alone.

The Shawshank Redemption
(1994)

Unbelievable performance by Tim Robbins
What a fantastic movie! Tim Robbins gave the best performance I have ever seen by an actor and Morgan Freeman was excellent, also. There are some unbelievably moving scenes in this film. I foolishly passed it by at the theater and at the video store. When I saw it on cable for the first time, I realized it was a truly special movie. Why? I could not put my finger on it until I read the summary on the video box in the store. It really is a triumph of the human spirt with a tremendously satisfying ending. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and it will be added to my collection this Christmas!
