Blood Simple
(1984)

Joel and Ethan, Please tell me why?
This was (and still is) a great movie, but I don't understand the reasons for the re-release (a.k.a. directors cut).

"Friday night is Yankee night" and "I own the place...why don't you grow up" only add to the personalities of the characters.

And (growing up on the VHS version) I prefer the "I'm a believer" sound track over the Four Tops. The mood is much better on the older VHS release.

Again, I love this movie and I recommend it to everyone, but the original (and VHS) release was much better. Sure the story is still the same, but the little nuances are gone.

Apparently only 90 seconds (or so) were cut from the movie. I can't imagine that these 90 seconds make the movie any worse. But Joel and Ethan seemed to think so.

Maybe they thought this was another opportunity to "screw with us" as they usually do.

The Song Remains the Same
(1976)

3 words... "Living F---ing Legends"
My subject is more of a commentary on the band, not the movie. I'm not really a "Led Head". I didn't discover them until the late 80's. I just wish I was born 10 years earlier so I could have experienced them (and other great 70's bands) first hand.

I was 6 when this movie was released and didn't get into the concert scene until rock was in "spin-off mode" (The Firm, Plant, Dio, Ozzy, etc.). But still... This movie is a PERFECT snap shot of the 70's concert scene... Jimmy (Page) with his cosmic pants and girls with neon blue eye shadow.

The movie isn't that great if you're looking at it as a technical piece (direction, cinematography, etc.). But it excels at helping us remember what that period was like. Again, a 14 year old Britany fan will NEVER understand it. It's for those of us who were a part of that dynasty. It's "Classic Rock Video". You watch it... and remember what it was like in the "good old days".

I'm still amazed at how these guys were gods in the music industry. Talk about leaving your mark. They defined a generation and changed the lives of millions, just as The Beatles did a decade before. This kind of fame will never happen again (in corporate America). Do InSync fan's think the same way as we thought about The Beatles and Led Zeppelin? :)

Again, this movie wasn't great (technically), but if you were even remotely a part of this era, it's a must see. I gave it a 7/10 just because I get chills thinking about how these guys were living legends and it seemed like they knew how to handle it.

Wild Wild West
(1999)

Where's Bruce Campbell when you need him?
I am still a fan of the original TV show. If you're also a fan, DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE. You WILL be disappointed.

When I heard about this movie being in production I was hoping for the best... Unfortunately, they made the worst decisions ever.

I had assumed that this movie WAS GOING TO BE MODELLED AFTER THE TV SHOW!!! That would be a safe assumption, right? Instead they cast Will smith as the lead? I don't understand this. What was the target audience? Obviously it wasn't the fans of the show, or western fans in general.

What better actor to put in this role than Bruce Campbell? You may know of him from the Evil Dead series, but I feel his true role in life was to play Brisco County Jr. (look it up). This was a Boam/Cuse production that was unfortunately short lived on FOX (1993). But it was a perfect prequel to what the WWW movie should have been. All about the old west and 'the next coming thing' (the future).

But, back to this movie... There was no real thought put into this movie. It was obviously a 'formula movie'. 1 part young popular actor, 2 parts computer effects, sprinkled with gorgeous women. The only thing that the producers forgot about formula's... Mixed in the wrong proportions you WILL create a BOMB!!!

It may not have been a hit if it were produced by Boam, Cuse, Raimi, and Campbell. But it would have been more successful and another cult classic.

I'm glad I waited for the TV version. I have better things to spend my money on. I gave this movie a 1 of 10. I would have given it a 2 or 3, but I felt the average (4) was too high.

Thanks for reading this...

... aka Cool Hand Luke (1967)
This is the Chinese version of 'Cool Hand Luke'. I didn't like the Paul Newman version but after seeing this, I've got to give Paul Newman a lot more credit.

I watch it because I'm a huge Jackie Chan fan. See it if you must, but watch the original first (Cool Hand Luke - 1967). The American version is much more entertaining.
