My Life
(1993)

Well Acted, Well Written, Very SAD Movie
I have only seen this movie once, when it originally premiered and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. After all these years I still think it's Michael Keaton's finest performance. With that said it's highly unlikely that I would ever see "My Life" again, too sad, to emotionally draining. The sadness isn't just because of his illness and untimely death but his inner struggle with his family and heritage speaks volumes to many 1st generation Americans who have and do struggle with the same feelings.

Nicole Kidman and Queen Latifah are very good in their perspective roles.

It's a good movie and worth seeing but be prepared to cry and reflect on your own mortality.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch
(1996)

BEWITCHED IT'S NOT!
I thought the TV movie that introduced us to Sabrina/Melissa Joan Hart was very good and when I heard that they were in production for a weekly show I couldn't wait for it to start. But sadly the show just didn't do it for me. The show was poorly written, poorly directed and at times poorly acted. I give Hart credit because she really did carry the show for the 7 years. Some might say that the show was a success because it ran for 7 seasons but that alone to me doesn't mean the show was any good. Those of us in our late 20's and early 30's remember Bewitched and I think that we expected, at least I did, for Sabrina to be in the vain of Bewitched not a carbon copy of it but at least better written and more consistency with story lines. The puppet (cat) I found corny and again not funny. The aunt's had their moments but again the material for the most part was badly written. I have tried and tried to really like this show, if I watch which is rare it's because I think Melissa Joan Hart gives it her all and one can't help but like her.

Girlfriends
(2000)

A Sophisticated Comedy
This show is, in my opinion, a very funny well written well acted program. I find it to be sophisticated and not your typical "urban" comedy. The chemistry between the four actresses is wonderful and believable. I must admit that there is a familiar feeling to the format of the show but, so what there are many sitcoms that are "like" other sitcoms that doesn't necessarily mean they are bad. Girlfriends brings a fresh approach to a old format. I like the fact that all the characters are in different places in their lives and that they are different in their approach to life, I find most of the story lines to be very truthful and realistic. This show is worth your time!

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries: A Great Deliverance
(2001)
Episode 1, Season 1

A Refreshing Change
I am a fan of not only the BBC but of the PBS "Mystery" series. For years I have watched many detectives, inspectors, amateur sleuths etc and in my opinion Inspector Lynley is one of the best ones. I think the show is well written and well thought out. The chemistry between the actors is right on the money. I can not imagine why anyone would not like this series. This particular installment, which was of course the first, was especially well done. I am a fan of Elizabeth Georges' writing and I felt that they stayed true to the characters that she created which is not always easy in film form. For me this series has not only the usual elements that English shows bring with them but an added quality.

Mama's Family
(1983)

Mama, I Don't Find You That Funny!
I liked the "Family" sketch on "The Carol Burnett Show". But overall I did not and do not find "Mama's Family" very funny, it has it's moments but not enough for me. Personally I think the show became less funny when it went into syndication.(3rd season on)A few have said it was TV's first dysfunctional family, while that may be true it was no "Roseanne". Some love this show, some hate this show I think it's OK if nothing else is on TV.This is no reflection on the acting. The actors do the best they can with what I feel are mostly very weak scripts. Obviously millions of people watched the show for it to have been on a total of 7 years but I never liked Seinfeld either so you can't go by me.

In America
(2002)

An Honest Film About Real People
I really like this film! I like the direction, the writing and most especially the acting. The young actress that plays "Ariel" is fantastic but then so is the rest of the cast. I love that the writer and director show that "Hell's Kitchen", a part of Manhattan not known as a great area also has good decent people living and working there, due mostly to circumstance. The film uses an Irish family to tell it's story but the truth is the family could be from any ethnic or cultural background and it would still work. It's a story of loss and of fear but it is also a story of hope, love, friendship, courage and new beginnings. I believe it's a very realistic look at what some immigrants go through when they arrive in a new country.

Miel para Oshún
(2001)

A Brief Look
I wasn't sure what to expect and for the first 35 minutes or so I thought the film was going to be pure melodrama. But once the film got going I realized that this film is a look at one of the many cruel realities that both Cuban's and Cuban-American's face everyday, the loss of family and self. I thought the picture painted of Cuba and it's government was not overly critical. I was amazed, having been to Cuba myself and seeing the government control that this film was allowed to be shot, in that there were certain subtle criticisms of the government. Overall I thought the film was very well made and acted. If anything it certainly shows Cuba from Havana to the countryside. I do feel however that the almost romance between the lead character and his cousin was unnecessary and did nothing to improve the movie.

Pauline & Paulette
(2001)

My First Time, Ever.
This is the first film that I have ever seen that was Belgium, my first time so to speak was really very good! From the very beginning I knew that these actresses must be very well known and grand dames of the film business in Belgium. From the very start of the film to the end I was completely engrossed. I liked that the character of Pauline was not completely mentally challenged. Often times when films are made of handicap individuals they make them complete idiots and dependent on their caretakers. I liked that Paulette's character came to see the reality of her need for Pauline to be in her life. I thought that the actress who played Pauline did an excellent job, very creditable.

The Weight of Water
(2000)

A Little Watery For Me!
This film would have been 100 times better if the "modern day" plot was non-existent. I found the film to drag on I couldn't wait for it to end. Due mostly to the "Modern Day" dilema that was placed in the movie. Why, because? No clue. I believe that they could have made two movie's out of this one movie. From my point of view, the two plots have nothing to do with each other, other than the island. And the story set in the 1800's is the more interesting story. I found the actors doing the best they could with a bad script. I did not like the character that Elizabeth Hurley plays, I thought in the "real" world someone would have set her straight way before they do. Not a good movie not even a fair movie, don't waste your time.

Fried Green Tomatoes
(1991)

THAT SIZZLED IN THE PAN !
Fannie Flagg wrote an incredible book and the movie was and is just as great. Many people have said it's a "woman's" movie and that men won't like it. All this male can say is "Fried Green Tomatoes" is a movie that can be enjoyed by both men and women.

There isn't a performance that isn't brilliant. Every actor in this movie is in top form. Rent it, Buy it, Watch it, You'll love it!!

Dead Ringer
(1963)

DOUBLE DOSE OF DAVIS
Through out the years many critics have said that the movies that Bette Davis did during the 60's were bad and campy at best, I tend to disagree. While some of them were not the best movies, Davis was always her best in them. Davis couldn't give a bad performance.

DEAD RINGER is a good movie with a good script and veteran actors doing what they do best. Definitely a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Please Murder Me!
(1956)

The Twist Saves the Film
As much as I Like both Burr and Lansbury, I do not like this movie. The only thing that saves this movie, a little bit, is the unique and rarely seen in other movies, plot twist. Once Burr's character realizes that Lansbury's character used him to get acquitted of murder he creates a situation that forces Lansbury's character to kill him, which is his intent all along. I have never seen this type of plot done in another movie and while it is intriguing and the actors do their parts well, The acting doesn't save this movie. It drags and the dragging takes away from the enjoyment.

It is a watchable movie, not the worst I have ever seen on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, I would rate it a 4.

Sorry, Wrong Number
(1948)

WHAT A GREAT MOVIE !
Many reviewers use words like "Riveting" and "Spellbinding" I am going to keep it short and simple.

Barbara Stanwyck is brilliant, the movie is Great!

Rent it, Buy it, Watch it, you'll love it!

Gladiator
(2000)

I wanted to be thrown to the Lions after 20min of this movie!
Many have said that this movie was full of action etc. And that the acting was superb etc.

Well the acting might have been good and the action scenes may have kept my attention for a minute but this movie was so boring and so wrong, in terms of historical content that it isn't funny.

To begin with the king,Marcus Aurelius, does not get killed in his tent but on the battle field by his "son". He is stabbed not hugged to death.

Also the term Spaniard wasn't used for at least 500 years after the Roman Empire fell. Spain was still Iberia hence anyone from Iberia would have been called Iberian. It may seem anal to some but they could have at least gotten those facts correct. I realize that Maximus Decimus Meridius is a fictional character and therefore this movie is part fiction but it is also part non-fiction and they could have at least tried to get the facts right.

I was disappointed to say the least, DON'T waste your time!

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
(1991)

THE BEST ROBIN HOOD EVER!
I Can't Say enough good things about this film, DEFINETLY on my top 5 favorite movies EVER!

At the time this movie was released many "critics" were obsessed on two things: 1- that Costner's accent was nowhere to be found and 2- that if it wasn't for Alan Rickman the film would have no value. I remember the British press saying that the British actors saved the movie, meaning of course not only Rickmans performance but G.Mcewan as Mortiana, B. Blessed as Lord Locksley And N. Brimble as Little John to name a few and I Guess they had a point. Whatever the case it was and still is a GREAT MOVIE!

I Thought Costner was good not only in a dramatic capacity but humorous as well. M. Freeman was well, GREAT as always. M.E. Mastrantonio "IS MAID MARION", she did a superb job as the not so helpless maiden.

And of course all though he is in the movie for about 4 mins, Sean Connery is AWESOME as King Richard!

Again, this is a GREAT MOVIE and as one before me has said: Swashbuckling Medieval Adventure at its Finest...

Stone Pillow
(1985)

GREAT MOVIE, SOME BAD CASTING!
Lucille Ball was 74 when she made this movie. Not only was it shot on location in New York but it was summer time and unusually HOT. The rumors are that Lucy fainted a number of times during the filming because of the heat.

Now putting those things aside, I felt this was one of Lucy's greatest performances but as per usual many "critics", not all, had negative things to say about her performance. I have often said too many people expected to see "Lucy Ricardo" in anything that Lucy did, and frankly that wasn't fair to her but, who says Hollywood is fair!

The casting of Daphne Zuniga was a mistake. I never felt the connection between the characters was good. In truth Lucy carried this entire movie as far as I am concerned, unfortunately some areas of the movie suffer because of it.

With that said, I highly recommend this movie! Lucy is wonderful in it and it is worth a Sunday night.

Now the question is can you find the movie?

Leaving Las Vegas
(1995)

GREAT ACTING BUT....
Cage and Shue are great actors and they are the only reason I didn't walk out half way through the movie. I did not enjoy this movie at all and years later still wonder why so many people love it!

I have seen dark movies before and have liked them but this movie just dragged and dragged and I couldn't wait for it to be over.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
(1989)

GOD I LIKED HIM BETTER BEFORE HE DIED!
I know that many, many Trekkies weren't thrilled with this movie, in fact many down and out hated it. I am not one of them I actually Really liked and still like this movie very much.

That isn't to say that I loved everything about it, The encounter with the God like creature isn't great. But the line that comes at almost the end of the movie where Kirk is going to hug Spock on the bridge of the Klingon ship and Spock says "Please Capt. not in front of the Klingons" is timeless.

The reason I loved this movie is because of the exploration of the relationships between the crew. I am well aware that many argue that Uhura and Scotty's love affair came out of no where but I thought it was a nice touch. The scenes with Kirk,McCoy and Spock in Yosemite by the camp fire are timeless and it makes the movie worth watching. The scenes where Sybok is exploring McCoy's and Spocks source of pain gives a better insight to why they are they way they are, in part at least.

If your a Trekkie,Trekker or just a SiFi fan and haven't watched V in awhile you should go back and watch it again and you'll see what I mean.

It is a good movie and I thought Shatner did a good job at directing. The fall from the mountain is a very cool scene and directed well.

Mame
(1974)

HERES TO THE UP-JOHNS
Personally I have never understood why so many people didn't like this movie. I do not believe that it is as bad as some think. Certainly it isn't "The Sound Of Music" but it isn't suppose to be. Many people rave about Russell's performance, I'm not one of them. Russell's version wasn't bad per se but it didn't make me laugh as much. Lucy's version of Mame was written more with comedy in mind, most probably due to Lucy's comedic timing.

Sure there are things I didn't like about Mame, like the fact that Bea Arthur should have had more air time. She was brilliantly funny in this movie and it is a shame that they didn't use her more. I thought we should have seen more of Mame's and Beau's relationship.

Now as far as the comments about the 10 pounds of vaseline that they filmed Lucy with, what she's the only actor in the world who has ever been filmed that way, please give it a rest. The problem is that people want Lucille to always be Lucy Ricardo and when she isn't they complain.

This film is funny, entertaining and even touching at times I believe that was the goal of all involved. And although it didn't do well at the box office, it has done very well in video, go figure!
