Palm Springs
(2020)

puerile...
It's puerile, but I guess 13yo boys might like it.

Curb Your Enthusiasm: Elizabeth, Margaret and Larry
(2020)
Episode 8, Season 10

Brilliant!
This is what happens when you get Curb + good actors. John Hamm as shadow Larry was just freaking genius. Larry at his best, even with a bleeding rectum. Sorry, gotta go!

Little Women
(2019)

What's all the fuss, really?
I was expected to be mind blown given the reviews and fuss made about this movie. But after ten minutes in I was bored. Totally and irredeemably bored. It just jumps from scene to scene and provides no story line. It's as though each page of the book has been brought to life but without the benefit of the author's text to fill in the details.

Is it technically good? Maybe, but what's the point if there's nothing to hold on to.

Flatters to deceive. Style over substance. Dialogue over exploration. And ultimately just a bit, well, boring.

Winchester
(2018)

loved it
Maga gun nuts will hate it, so it deserves 10 stars. spooky!

Knives Out
(2019)

Disappointing..
Turned out to be a bit of a mess in turns of the plot, it felt like they made it up as they went along. The film was longer than it needed to be, and the camera spent way too much time zoomed in on the pretty nervous girl, whose basic role was to conjure up as many facial expressions (some variation on anguish and confusion) as possible.

It was obvious the old man committed suicide, so the whole "whodunnit" aspect of a supposed murder mystery was thrown out of the window after 20 minutes! And we all know Trump s*cks, but movies are supposed to be about escape, I don't want culture wars in my movies as well, thanks.

This did not live up to the acclaim. And I just wanted it to end. And when it did I was underwhelmed.

Marriage Story
(2019)

Pointless and boring
It's really just privileged people complaining about their lives, or interfering in other people's affairs. Sorry, but I just don't see what the fuss is about. The endless, mindless, persistent talking about their uninteresting lives, it's just all so very dull and insipid.

Official Secrets
(2019)

An excellent and important film.
It's been so long since I last sat through a movie as good as this, that I didn't want it to end.

This is a film that needs to be watched. The politics of it speaks for itself, and you will wonder how we let the government do what they did. Real footage of the day was interwoven so well that you wouldn't be blamed for thinking that it can't possibly have happened. But then the reality of it slaps you in the face.

Keira Knightly's performance is superb, and deserving of best actress nominations. Whilst Ralph Fiennes as the swaggering lawyer Ben Emmerson was a joy to behold. And Matt Smith showed a subtle, poignant acting energy that was on the money.

A real treat, and one that will leave you jubilant, but also very angry.

Anna
(2019)

Didn't think it could be worse than Lucy
But it was. It really is a trashy film. Derivative, muddled, and a very bad script. Not even Helen Mirren or Cillian Murphy could redeem this one. Luss has some presence but she's either a poor actor or the direction is lacking (probably a bit of both).

Luc Besson is really just laughing at his audience now, as he knows there are enough suckers to fall for his "style", and the odd big name actor to give his films a veneer of credibility. Anna isn't even bad in a good way, the kind of Jean Claude Van Damme bad that you might actually be able to sit through if you were desperate for a distraction.

I couldn't even finish it. It was just not worth wasting any more time on. I think Besson has defined a new genre - Trashploitation.

The Witness
(2015)

Interesting and gripping, until the final scenes..
Remarkable tale and insight into how the media treated the "facts" of the case. And a few revelations came to light about Kitty that portrayed her as a mysterious but loved character.

But what on earth was that ending about? I thought wanting to meet the (clearly delusional) killer was a step too far - it seems his son inherited the whacky delusions as well. But the recreation ventured into obsession, if not a fetish role play. Very bizarre, and hard to see what that proved.

A better director and story editor could have made this so much better. It has all the elements of a great true story. But I think because there was a sense of no real closure, the end was staged to inject some excitement. Bad decision.
