Bakemono no ko
(2015)

An excellent and funny coming of age fantasy adventure that strategically combines some of the best ingredients: a buddy story, supernatural beings and epic fights
Positive:
  • perfect for all ages
  • refreshing story of two individuals who find their place in the world together
  • original mix of different well-known stories and concepts
  • touching moments
  • impressive fights and pictures

Negative:
  • nothing.

No Country for Old Men
(2007)

A magnificent and epic classic from the start
Positive:
  • dark humor and artful dialogues
  • brilliant staging and intelligent narrative style that casts a spell
  • memorable characters, notably Javier Bardem as a slightly different psychopath

Negative:
  • sobering end.

Top Gun: Maverick
(2022)

Emotionally gripping and breathtaking old-school thrill
Positive:
  • breathtaking and virtuosic flight scenes (without visual effects!)
  • quick and clear staging
  • good balance between flight scenes and interpersonal drama / despite character drama a real "male" action film
  • good balance between nostalgia/homage and reinvention
  • powerful images and sound

Neutral:
  • politically neutral, but still military propaganda

Negative:
  • a little too much egomania by Tom Cruise; the film doesn't have much else to offer besides him and the aerial spectacle.

Tian · Huo
(2019)

Entertaining trash movie with some good moments
Positive:
  • surprisingly emotional moments

Negative:
  • series of questionable moments (where people curiously survive)
  • low budget special effects
  • unimaginative story.

The Wonder of Animals
(2014)

Entertaining, exciting and informative
Positive:
  • very different animals keep the documentary exciting and varied
  • mainly scientifically substantiated analysis, but conveyed in an exciting and lively way

Negative:
  • nothing.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
(2022)

Owns much of the typical Harry Potter magic
Positive:
  • Mads Mikkelsen as Grindelwald
  • stunning sets, meticulously designed animals and costumes and an excellent sound (and D-Box!!) production make this a cinema "beast"

Negative:
  • with Dumbledore in the focus, it feels more like a Harry Potter movie than a Fantastic Beasts movie.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
(2021)

Surprising and entertaining superhero fun
Positive:
  • outrageously entertaining and dry-humored, but at the same time emotional, tragic and gloomy
  • non-stop surprises
  • the once again fantastic Tom Holland gives his character a whole new depth and the chemistry with Zendaya is phenomenal
  • banging action and an impressive excursion into the mirror dimension
  • many future MCU spoilers and an exciting cliffhanger at the end

Neutral:
  • merging with the non-MCU Spider-Man films (enriches the story, but feels somehow wrong to bring back these old characters)

Negative:
  • letting May die (in this way), only to give him his own "with great power comes great responsibility" moment.

Don't Look Up
(2021)

An outrageous but terrifyingly believable story about human stupidity and ignorance
Positive:
  • the film raises important issues that describe the current social situation and the failure of media

Negative:
  • too long
  • exaggerated and painful humor
  • ridiculous end that fails to convey a convincing message.

Rurôni Kenshin: Sai shûshô - The Final
(2021)

Starts leisurely, but explodes into a peerless action spectacle towards the end
Positive:
  • breathtaking action choreography (fast-paced and spectacular fights in anime style that still don't seem unrealistic, including original techniques and sets)
  • besides the action you will also be faced with tragedy, anger, despair, loss and and inner conflicts

Negative:
  • flat and clumsy script that makes the film too long and very slow-moving at the beginning
  • no serious character expression apart from Kenshin (the characters look blank if you haven't seen the predecessors)

Eternals
(2021)

Epic and excellently staged superhero film, but using the usual MCU scheme does more harm than good
Positive:
  • gripping action scenes
  • impressive backdrops and breathtaking images
  • immediately emotional despite numerous new heroes
  • refreshing dramaturgy with clever twists and no typical CGI orgy as a finale

Negative:
  • the integration of MCU-typical humour and all sorts of allusions feels forced and wrong in addition to the epic narrative and spherical style. As a standalone film "Eternals" would have been more rounded.

Zack Snyder's Justice League
(2021)

Respect that the version was realized, but it's still an exhausting four-hour monster that actually doesn't benefit anyone except the few who demanded it
Positive:
  • great entertainment
  • thrilling superhero story that's taught like a great fairytale
  • new look, background stories, supporting characters and ending
  • enough backstory for every hero, so you can identify with them when they finally step onto the team pitch

Negative:
  • seems endless (and partially pointless)

Tenet
(2020)

Cinema is not dead! - this philosophical experiment proves to be another Nolan-masterpiece
Positive:
  • unique & overwhelming action spectacle, with strong staging that deserves the big screen
  • cool cast
  • film music / soundscape

Neutral:
  • not always easy to understand the complex plot of the film, which at the same time makes it great

Negative:
  • nothing.

Greenland
(2020)

Chaos and destruction only as a backdrop to the story of a family's desperate survival
Positive:
  • emotions and tension instead of pure doomsday
  • the focus is on the human scale of a crisis, which makes this a realistic feeling rarity of a disaster film
  • strong main actor pair

Negative:
  • too many plot twists and always new obstacles to overcome
  • in some moments a bit rough
  • not consistently convincing CGI effects
  • unfortunately genre-typical heroic towards the end.

Bad Boys for Life
(2020)

Toughness, coolness, wit - better than its predecessor
Positive:
  • punchy humor, surprisingly great emotions and still an excellent chemistry between Smith and Lawrence
  • fresh characters

Negative:
  • with the excessive action and violence, the film sometimes overshoots the target
  • not every gag fires.

After We Collided
(2020)

Not only sexier and funnier, but also a better film than the first part - but anyone who has no interest in romantic drama anyway can stay away from this
Positive:
  • the sex is wilder than in the first film and conveys that they really want each other
  • in spite of a lot of drama, inbetween there's good mood and humour

Negative:
  • thanks to the constant back and forth between Tessa and Hardin and a lot of narrative idleness, the film drags on noticeably towards the end.

Chaos Walking
(2021)

Conceptionally inventive, but possibly a prequel would have been more exciting and could have been the start for a trilogy...
Positive:
  • top-class cast with two charismatic main roles
  • Todds clumsiness with blurting out things
  • some fascinating ideas and an ingenious visual implementation of the "noise" and some related effects

Negative:
  • many briefly opened storylines which are not actually pursued
  • the filmmakers could have made more out of this actually exciting concept.

Bloodshot
(2020)

Funny trash
Positive:
  • entertaining
  • cleverly staged, so you can experience the disorientation of the protagonist
  • play with the question of what is reality
  • Vin Diesel at his best gives the film identity and charisma
  • heavy action sequences
  • futuristic gimmicks and special effects background

Negative:
  • tries to start its own superhero universe, but just recycles a lot of well-known elements
  • underdeveloped script that has no sense of character development, background story or emotions and instead serves dull action and thus does not exploit the potential of the interesting basic idea
  • the secondary characters appear flat
  • partly bad computer effects and too hectically cut scenes.

The Craft: Legacy
(2020)

Good approach, but poorly implemented
Positive:
  • easy-going tone, which gives the film a lively, not too serious energy
  • the pace of the story development

Negative:
  • predictable high school drama story with the gradual change of the main character into a self-confident young woman that has been seen enough times
  • not very well thought out figures
  • disappointing and abrupt finale, that ends the film completely unsatisfactory.

Monster Hunter
(2020)

Fantasy Monster Scrap, that's not as epic as you'd expect
Positive:
  • convincing stars
  • sophisticated visuals
  • pretty cool designed gear
  • humorous and enthralling
  • something different

Negative:
  • reduced storyline
  • typical Hollywood ending / showdown.

Iron Sky: The Coming Race
(2019)

It's what it's trying to be: Trash
Positive:
  • a few funny scenes

Negative:
  • dramaturgical lean periods
  • really bad actors
  • absurd and silly.

Into the Beat - Dein Herz tanzt
(2020)

Disappointing at times, but still quite thrilling
Positive:
  • great main actors
  • many fresh and varied dance performances
  • good vibes, but also touching moments

Negative:
  • often seen film idea without great surprises
  • overly educational.

Just Mercy
(2019)

A portrait of injustice
Positive:
  • Depicts the injustices of the US judicial system and its killing system powerfully by showing the horror of death and how deeply prejudice and racism are rooted in society
  • great acting performances

Negative:
  • nothing.

Captive State
(2019)

Gloomy, fascinating and strange at the same time - but you'd better wait to see if there's a sequel!
Positive:
  • clever ideas and gambling with sci-fi elements
  • uniquely designed aliens
  • exciting and unpredictable

Negative:
  • confusing action that requires constant following and thinking
  • no completed story, you are left with a cliffhanger.

Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn
(2020)

In some ways it's art, but not a masterpiece overall
Positive:
  • refreshingly weird with a wide repertoire of everything (tricks, clothing, surroundings)

Negative:
  • tends to exaggeration
  • the lack of a serious plot and even a single charismatic star except Margot Robbie.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado
(2018)

A completely different film than its predecessor, but also exciting and dynamic
Positive:
  • well done
  • hard action
  • fantastic performances by Josh Brolin and Benicio del Toro

Negative:
  • gloomy-pessimistic mood. Sicario 2 is missing what made the first part: the breath of hope that Emily Blunt exudes in between all the violence and ruthlessness.
