Joy Ride
(2023)

Hilarious and Heartfelt
This movie is hilarious! I really can't understand the negative reviews,, except that there are some people who just don't like raunchy comedies, so each their own. This is like an Asian American girls Hangover or Girls Trip movie, but also with cultural elements and family sentiments like Joy Luck Club. I laughed so hard, some scenes were so ridiculous like oh, no, they didn't! The China scenes were beautiful and heart-warming. I don't know if there's any historical accuracy to it or if there is really a place called Hai Qing. Seems unlikely to see a blend of Mandarin and Toisan this way, but I still enjoyed it and love seeing Asian actors who look and speak like me and my family represented in mainstream American film. Everyone on the cast were hilarious in their own way and did a great job. This is definitely worth a watch.

The Brothers Sun

Hooked and Bingeworthy
This show is packed with action and really funny. I like all the characters, even Bruce who got some criticism as being a weak link by other reviewers. I think he balances out the show just fine. The story line opens up to new surprises along the way. Mom and Charles have a fun-poking contentious relationship.

As a Chinese American, I am always excited to see a move or that integrates Chinese and English. Also great to see such a large pan-Asian cast. Some scenes are a bit budget and some of the acting is not as strong as the main characters but not a huge bother.

I'm partway through the series, so far so good. It continues to be captivating and entertaining.

Boys and Girls

Watch it for Bay Area Scene
Kinda a rom com you can just leave on in the background. If you're from the Bay Area or ever went to Berkeley, it's fun to see the scenes of campus and nice spots around SF. But the movie is so logistically inaccurate that it may bug some people; like you would never have to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get to the airport. And you could never possibly get from SF to campus as quickly as they depict.

The story line is sort of cute and cheesy but the acting is a mismatch. Not sure if this is the right role for Claire Florlani. She is kind of flat. The other characters make it fun.

Overall, this movies isn't great but not A complete waste of time either. It's just ok.

Great Movie!
I didn't know this was going to be a vampire movie. I don't usually like vampire movies but this turned out to be a fun watch. Action packed. Decent story line, good music. The acting is great. I don't know why there are so many bad reviews. I really liked it and so did my kiddo. Only thing is, it's a little gory, but by nature expected since it's a modern vampire flick.

Father of the Bride

Great Movie! Give it a chance
Don't listen to all the negative reviews. This is a great, entertaining movie. Really funny and well done. Love the highlighting of Cuban and Mexican culture. Soundtrack is really good too. I think some people are too attached to the original and walked into this with bias. I kind of like this refreshed version better than the original one.

Hustle

Great Movie!
Heartwarming basketball movie with a good story line. Hints of Jerry Macguire and Rocky. Fun to see cameos of so many NBA stars and legends. Adam Sandler, I appreciate his more recent films, more depth without the obnoxiousness from his younger work. Queen Latina and Juan Hernangomez were great too. Really good family movie.

The Holiday

Really wanted to like this movie...
... But this movie had some dead spots and really dragged. The story line is cute and was very promising, but the whole thing just falls short. I really expected more from this cast and the budget. It has its moments of charm, but was super slow and didn't have enough interaction. Felt excessively long and the musical interludes and transitions just left it very sleepy and disconnected. Also feel like there's an imbalance. They spend a lot more time in the Cameron Diaz story than the Kate Winslet story. Still made it through to the end, but was left wondering why we spent so much time watching this pack luster film.

Give it a chance
This review is based on watching only the pilot, so may change. This is a very creative spin and fairly well done. I get that it's hard to do a reboot and not offend those who adore the nostalgia of the original. I loved the original too, but I'm trying to go in with an open mind. The conflicts between family members were always present in the undertones of the original, they just happen to be front and center here. I think the biggest adjustment is looking at this from a drama lens rather than the comedy that it was the first time. I don't feel like it's trite or that they are trying too hard. It's a modern twist that will take some time for folks to buy into. So far so good.

Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens
(2020)

Ridiculous!!!
This show is ridiculous funny! I wasn't a huge fan of Awkwafina but came to like her more after I saw this show. I feel like I understand her and her comedy so much better now. Being Chinese American myself, this show really resonated with me. This show is raunchy and overdone in certain parts, but so hilarious my stomach hurt from laughing. We binge watched the whole season in a day. I really hope she does a second season.

Mulan

As Expected, Good Movie
Beautiful movie with stunning colors and cinematography. It stuck to the storyline that we all know. Yes, they could have done a little more in character development and detail in some parts of the movie, but overall, it was a good movie to watch as a family. I've read some of the other mixed and negative reviews. I think people are going in with too many expectations with its affiliation with Disney and the prior animated movie, and just aren't giving this movie a fair chance to be its own artistic interpretation. My seven year old watched it with me and loved it and would have given it a ten. He didn't go in with any expectations. He walked away understanding the message of the story and that women can be powerful heroes and earn respect and position for their accomplishments, and with some insight and appreciation for Chinese history and virtues. While he wasn't a critic of other minor inaccuracies here and there, he did pick up on the fact that there was fighting and death but no blood. I told him, it is Disney after all.
