House of Cards: Chapter 52
(2016)
Episode 13, Season 4

Am I the only one who gets scared when Underwood talks directly to us???
I still don't know if I want Frank to win or to die...

Boardwalk Empire
(2010)

You can't be half a gangster
You know it is going to be good when it is produced by Martin Scorcese and starred by Steve Buscemi.

The directing and writting are incredible, it never looses quality and you know that no matter who gets wacked it never fills like something is missing.

It isn't as good as The Sopranos, though. Both shows have their slow moments/episodes, but the comic side of The Sopranos and the funny acting of James Gandolfini makes the show more entertaining.

Still, another incredible success from HBO.

Nomadland
(2020)

An emotional story filled with superb acting and extraordinary directing
First of all, Nomadland is a very slow paced, character-driven movie. It is surprisingly deep and emotion and it is this emotion, along with Frances McDormand inspired performance, that keeps you hooked to the screen.

Having done my share of travelling and bonfires, Nomadland reminded me a lot of those times and I believe everyone who has had the oppurtinity to travel and sleep in the open will relate to it.

The directing is truly amazing, every shot was carefully planned and the landscapes are gorgeous.

To sum up, don't except any suspense or twists or secret meanings. This is just a simple, yet beautiful movie about Fern and his journey.

Soul
(2020)

Don't let your life sleep away
I don't believe this was meant for kids. The message behind it is incredibly beautiful and deep and important, but it is completely meant for adults.

There are silly, childish scenes meant for kid's entertainment and emotional scenes whose message only makes sense to an adult.

The storyline isn't as thrilling as in other Pixar's movies, but the message behind must never be forgotten.

Morals and fables aren't just for kids, and adults need to be reminded so that they can learn from them too.

The Father
(2020)

Loosing my mind
First of all, Anthony Hopkins gives one of his best performances as a man struggling with dementia, only topped by his role in Silence of the Lambs.

Secondly, The Father shows how powerful storytelling can be. It shows incredibly well what it is like for a person with dementia to realise his slowly loosing his mind and there is nothing to be done about it.

It isn't confusing or complex. It is just storytelling at its best and a short set of actores giving some of the best performances of their carrers.

One of the best movies of the year.

Pieces of a Woman
(2020)

30 minute masterpiece, 90 minute average
The first 30 minutes of the movie are astounishing. The way it is all filmed in one shot and builds up to the tragic conclusion of the first act is truly remarkable.

From there it is a slow paced movie supported only by the amazing performance of Vanessa Kirby.

There is also a scene with Martha's family (also filmed in one shot) that is also pretty good, but it never gets as good as that beginning.

Watch it for the first 30 minutes.

Sound of Metal
(2019)

Masterclass in Sound Editing
A drumer tries to move on with his life after loosing his everything: his ears.

Of course that, in such a movie, the sound would be a major aspect of it, but I never thought it could overshadow the visuals. From noisy concerts to moments of stunning silence, the movie's audio plays a key role in letting us understand what deaf people go through and how peaceful silence can be.

The photography and directing are also great, but it's funny how it is the picture that complements the sound and not the other way around.

In addition, Riz Ahmed proves, again, how good an actor he is, playing a role which isn't always easy to grasp.

To sum up, Sound of metal is a movie about very aspects of life, from relationships to self-destruction, but I think its main message is how someone's everything may turn out to be nothing at all.

Hope you watch the movie.

Da 5 Bloods
(2020)

I can't understand the bad reviews
I know the movie has some issues, but it is still great filmmaking. I loved the way the characters developed, from idiots dancing at the club to traumatized war vets trying to survive Nam one last time. Their search for gold also reminded me a lot of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, by Sergio Leone.

Delroy Lindo gives one of the best performances of the year and he's not even nominated??? I hope the Academy doesn't snub this movie...

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
(2020)

Powerful movie with great performances
I really liked how they shot the movie like a play, with everything happening between two sets in a short time frame, filled with play-like monologues.

Every character is very tridimensional and their development is excellent, specially Levee, played by Chadwick Boseman.

By the way, amazing performance by Boseman. He steals the show, he even outshines Viola Davis. By far one of the best performances I've seen in the last years. Totally oscar-worthy.

Promising Young Woman
(2020)

An interesting mix of darkness and romance
I didn't have my hopes very high for this movie, but it blew me away. The story is very original and you can never predict what's going to happen next. Emerald Fennel does a terrific job writting and directing, creating a very dark atmosphere. Great job by Carey Mulligan too, she deserved that Golden Globe.

Best movie I've seen this year. Should have done better at the globes.
