Meat Market
(2000)

ups and downs for zombie hounds
I bought this film without know or having heard anything about it. I was determined to buy SOMETHING that night, and this was the only interesting thing, so i bought it. There are some really great aspects to this film, as well as some really horrible things. It's films like this one that enforce my belief that horror fans should NOT make their own horror movies. And by that, i mean it becomes inevitable that you are gonna try and pay homage to your faves, and throw in your own little inside jokes, and just all around try and be clever when you are, well, not. Also, i know its difficult to pull a budget together, and sometimes we just want to put something of ourselves out there so badly that we are willing to make a lot of compromises. And maybe it's just time for me to expand my mind on this subject, but for now, I CANNOT STAND WATCHING MATERIAL SHOT ON VIDEO!!! There should be some kind of warning on the box or case letting you know how a film is presented. Its just difficult to take a film seriously when it looks like you got a couple of friends together and borrowed you Dads Cam-corder to make a spooky movie. All that said and out of the way, i will say that this film is pretty good. I can honestly say that the filmmaker himself is going to be a fine director someday. The zombie make-up is VERY good. Better than a lot of movies that HAVE found financial backing. The writing is ...o.k... i think it might have come off a little better if a little more detail was paid to the acting (again, the same scenes could be shot on film as opposed to video and might have worked. It's the fault of the medium). One of my favorite pieces of the film is the storyline of Vampire vs. Zombie. I have always wanted to see this conflict in some form. Both undead, but in different ways. The film makes some interesting choices with that storyline, and id like to have seen more conflict there. Another good thing about this film is that it ALMOST never reverts to making fun of the genre or digresses into sophomoric jokes. For the most part, this movie does take itself very seriously, which gives it more integrity. I do recommend this film for zombie lovers, if for nothing else, to glimpse the early work of someone who will most definatly blossom into a great horror director.

Gone Bad: Episode 2
(2002)

GREAT ZOMBIE ANIMATION
i caught this short film at ATOMFILMS.com , and if you like horror, zombies, or great animation, you should DEFINATELY check this out also.

there are actually 2 installments to view there, and both are excellent. i hope to see more in the future.

Dancer in the Dark
(2000)

Melodram at its ultimate worst
This movie was both horrible and horribly tragic. Besides the gut-wrenching conclusion, the impossibly tragic situations in which the heroin finds herself are only slightly less believable that the fact that she refuses to do anything in her favor to save herself. This contrived ultra-tragedy tosses itself unabashedly over-the-top, far beyond the borders of even the most ridiculous of melodramas.

I do, feel that Bjork, though I'm admittedly NOT one of her fans, turns in quite a fine acting performance. More so, I think, than a musical one. She plays Selma, a Czechoslovakian immigrant factory worker who is quickly going blind, but must press on to make sure her sun gets the much needed operation so he does not do the same. I found myself comparing her character to many a Tennessee Williams tragic damsel. Most pointedly, "The Glass Menagerie"'s Amanda. Only Selma's escape from harsh reality is the movie musicals of the early 20th century. In fact, she often imagines herself in nostalgic musical numbers throughout the film. It is the bizarre little musical numbers that are...well...unbearable. Bjork wrote the numbers herself, and they truly are repugnant. The concept behind them may be clever, but the end result seems only half hearted and musically disheveled. Catherine Deneuve's portrayal of the best friend is well done, and "Cabaret"'s Joel grey does a nice job as a Czechoslovakian actor/film-maker.

If you are a fan of Bjork, or take some sadistic pleasure in watching helpless puppies get hit by trains, then by all means, check this out. But, if you are looking for a light hearted homage to the big screen musicals of the 20's and 30's, STEER CLEAR!

The Convent
(2000)

An Overwhelming Dissapointment
Let me begin by saying that I dont believe a movie needs to be "good" to be entertaining. I myself am in love with some of the worst movies ever made, and find myself watching them over and over again. If you'd like to know what they are, drop me a line.

This movie, however, is miserable. The gore isnt gorey. The Horror isnt horrifying. The jokes arent funny (and are WAY out of place).

This movie was given a lot of hype a few years ago. Trailers of the film were all over the web, and they were interesting. It was hinted that it was too graphic and violent to be released, and "oh, please help us find this future horror masterpiece a distributer before it fades away into obscurity and is never seen." Well, maybe that would have been best.

This movie semed to steal the plot of "Night of the Demons" and mix it up with some banal Scooby Doo episode. They even offer characters ripped out of Saturday Night Live's "Goth Talk".

It opens in 1959 with the torching of a all girls Catholic school/convent by a disgruntled student. She hauls guns, gas and explosives into the chapel and destroys everyone in sight, all to the tune of Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me". Next, we are brought into present times with two girls, one a simple sorority pledge and her former best friend, a goth chick. The goth chick is the only interesting/sympathetic character, so of course she is the first to go. Some more 'zany teens" show up, and all head off to "The Convent". Its become the local urban legend hot spot and make-out point.

That is really all you need to know. You know where its going...you know where it's gone. Someone gets possessed, they, in turn, possess someone else, and so on, and so on, and so on. Until someone has to run and get the chick that torched the place 40-some years ago in the first place.

Its just horrible. Im so sorry for Coolio, who has a sad little cameo in the film. Im so sorry for Adrienne Barbeau who apparently doesnt have anything else to look foreward to.

Stranger in Our House
(1978)

a fun, but difficult to find, teen witchcraft movie
This film is based on one of my favorite books from when i was younger. "Summer of Fear", which was written by Lois Duncan, who wrote many teen horror novels in the 70's. It involves a young girl (like most of Duncan's books) who finds herself confronted by the possibility that her 'dear' cousin is actually a witch hell bent on destroying her family and small circle of friends. The main reason im writing this comment is because im having a very tough time finding this film ANYWHERE. If you should happen across this review, and perhaps KNOW where i might find a copy, PLEASE...send up a smoke signal.

One Dark Night
(1982)

KINDA LIKE A ZOMBIE FILM, BUT NOT QUITE
i saw "One Dark Night" in the theater when i was 12 years old, and BOY...was i scared! HEHEHE Seeing it now, im obviously not shaking in my seat, but it its still a fun ride. A lot of 'zombie' movie fans have a lot of trouble with this movie (evident of the other comments on this page), but the corpses in this film aren't really zombies as much as puppet-like instruments used by the 'psychic vampire' to terrorize those trapped in the mosoleum. i will agree that this film takes an awfully long time to get off its feet, and all the talk of psychics and psychic power being inheritied bog the story down. However, once Meg Tilly finds her way into the deserted mosoleum, its a lot of fun, and a little gory (which is fun in itself, right?)

Shock Treatment
(1981)

'Rocky Horror" sequel more fun than first
Yes. I said it. It IS more fun! Mostly because you dont have to have 300 screaming idiots around you to liven up the party. And take my word, I was one of the 'screaming idiots' for over 13 years. There are a lot of nods to the first film, as well as many reoccuring characters though minor in 'Rocky'. Also, a lot of inside jokes and flat out making fun of over-enthusiastic audiences. In this film, they actually LIVE in the studio! Look for the notorious 'Dame Edna'(actor Barry Humphries) as the bizarre gameshow host, Bert Schnick. Also, Jessica Harper, who plays Janet, can also be seen in one of my favorite Italian Horror films, 'Suspiria'. if your not familiar with it, check it out.

Les démoniaques
(1974)

If this is the top in French horror, WHY???
This film was garbage. plain and simple. It did not have the gore to make up for its weak story line. It did not have enough sex to make up for its lack of gore. There was not enough nudity to shock in place of gore and sex....YIKES!

I guess I am twice as bitter, because i bought this DVD sight unseen. It does not even have any camp value. The closest thing i can compare it to is an ABBA video gone horribly awry.

Flawless
(1999)

annoying Hoffman ruins yet another fairly decent film
'Flawless" would have been just that had it not been for the over-acting, obvious and over-the-top exploits of Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I could not suspend my movie going disbelief enough to accept that this drawling, mincing, Norma Desmond-wannabe of a drag queen was supposedly the cream of the crop against the likes of Joey Arias and Raven O. It just was not happening. I must confess that i saw this film solely because of the cameo performance of Jackie Beat, as well as many of the incredible New York drag performers recruited to give it a legitimate drag backdrop. Much like 'To Wong Foo' which demanded we believe that two action heroes in dresses out shine veterans of the drag stages of the world. In both instances, the performers picked the most obvious and charictured acting choices to portray drag queens (limp wrists and southern drawls to name a few).

I would like to say that Robert Deniro's performance is incredible, as usual. And the plot is quite interesting. However, i cannot recommend it, simply due to the performance Hoffman offers. sorry

Zombi 2
(1979)

leader in "living dead" genre
Fulci's zombies are like no others. The gore in this film is exquisite, as well as the claustrophobic ambiance. The only 'bad' moment is the shark/zombie sequence. Along with 'The Beyond', 'Zombi 2'is the shining star in the long career of Italian director, Lucio Fulci. It's sad to think he will never again paint the screen with his brilliant and morbid visions of horror.
