Ripley
(2024)

The Italians!!
So much has been written about the magical cinematography, lighting and lead actors but I haven't seen much about the Italian actors. They were Magnifico!! If not for them the pace of the film might have been hard to bear. Every one of them had a distinct character and an interesting face. Inspector Ravini was particularly intriguing. His dialog was subtle - and even hilarious at times - and he played it with aplomb. The hotel front desk clerks were wonderful and distinctly memorable. All of the Italian supporting cast in minor roles were also delightful. Seeing the towns, the cities, the art, the roads, the homes, the architecture, the cars, was visually sumptuous. I'll be watching it a second time, just to see it all again and discover what I missed.

Luther: The Fallen Sun
(2023)

Snuff Film About Snuff Films
Horrible. Don't watch unless you are into "snuff films." Hard to believe Elba would make this. He must need money. Every evil trick and twist in film was used. All the actors should be ashamed - especially Elba and Cynthia Erivo. I guess the film makers knew those actors and the Luther character would compel fans to watch it. Shameful. Elba looked old and tired. My opinion of him certainly went down a few notches and I'm sure he ruined any small chance he ever had of being Bond, although that was close to zero anyway. Watched it - for some reason - until almost the end and then turned it off. Sorry I spent any time on it at all.

Lisey's Story
(2021)

Five or Six Episodes Too Many
This story could have been told in two or three episodes but it went on and on and on for no discernible reason. And what the heck was wrong with Clive Owen? Has he gotten too old and tired to act? Seems as though he'd rather have been anywhere else than in this movie. In addition, who can possibly comprehend the mind of Stephen King? There is plenty of evil and repugnant behavior to go around. Something kept me watching but I couldn't tell you what it was. Maybe my dark side. If all you have is time on your hands, then give it a try but prepare yourself to be bored and disgusted. "Babyluv, my Babyluv." That's your only prize, in the end.

The Gray Man
(2022)

So Disappointing!
Gosling got to show off his athleticism (and probably got paid well) but his talents were lost in this mess. So disappointing. Couldn't wait to see Reje-Jean Page but his performance was lackluster. So disappointing. Very cliched story line. So disappointing.

Fire in the Sky
(1993)

Probably the Best Abduction Scene Ever
Mediocre until that abduction scene. It almost looked real. Not sure why it hasn't been touted and/or replicated in some way. Fun to see the young cast that went on to great things!

The Thing
(1982)

Shockingly Overrated
I thought it was dumb in 1982 and watching it again 40 years later, it's even dumber. I honestly don't understand how anyone can call it anything but amateurish. I suppose Carpenter learned some lessons making it, so that might make it worth something. One dimensional characters - just a bunch of names - and who put MacReady in charge? Simple minded gore fest, if anything.

Ozark
(2017)

A Cautionary Tale?
I'm not sure I've ever seen a series where there is not one redeemable character - and there are at least 20 of them. Every decision they make goes directly to the dark side and there are no boundaries. Interesting ensemble of actors and parts. I like the setting. So many despicable people - but I kept watching. After the first season I was hoping that everyone wouldn't be evil, but that didn't happen. Pretty much destroys your faith in humanity so it might have been made as a cautionary tale, although it could be too late for all of us.

Master
(2022)

Too Heavy Handed
Pretty good premise, pretty good acting by the two main characters but a bit too heavy handed for my taste. Maybe most of us white folks need to be hit over the head but this would have been a much better film had it been done with a lighter touch.

Nightmare Alley
(2021)

Cooper and Mara Miscast
Yes, it's too long and lacks any draw emotionally. But the worst of it is the miscasting of Cooper and Mara. It's beyond me why Cooper's performance is being praised. The only electricity coming from Mara is during her Carny act. Blanchett tries hard but doesn't pull it off either. Her plastic surgery is very disconcerting. Such a shame. The carny scenes are the best part of this dreary film.

Halloween
(1978)

Not What You Think
Watched this for the first time today, 10/20/21. It's not what I thought it was. It's really just about a town full of raunchy teenagers. Oh, and there is also a psycho killer.

Scissors
(1991)

Sharon Stone is Lovely
Sharon Stone is quite beautiful in this very weird "thriller." I have a better appreciation for her after seeing this. Her scenes with the raven are realistic and more believable than any from "The Birds." A twisted approach to a standard storyline makes it somewhat watchable - in addition to Stone as the ingenue. More disturbing to me than the plot though, was the highly irritating sound of shoes clicking across the floor! Thank goodness film sound experts have learned how to eliminate that in films!!

A Day in the Life of America
(2019)

Strange Mix
It was a strange mix of life in America. Seemed like a lot of bias in the editing. I guess its pretty hard to depict "a day in the life" from the perspective of 300 million people though.

Bridgerton
(2020)

Rene-Jean Page
Four stars for the pleasure of observing Rene-Jean Page. Not much else is worth the watch. I did like Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington) though.

The Expanse
(2015)

Too Bad About the Bad Acting
This would have been a somewhat better series if it had stronger lead actors - especially in the role played by Steven Strait. Also, David Strathairn's acting borders on the laughable. Pretty good sci-fi although I'm not really qualified to comment on that. Pretty good production values. Sub plots are a little weak. Overall it was fairly entertaining.

The Frozen Ground
(2013)

The Story Was Better on the ID Channel
Bad directing, bad script, mostly bad acting. I've seen this as a crime documentary of the ID Channel and it was done much better. Loaded with cliches. Very mediocre movie. Sadly, Cage lost it a long time ago.

Spotless
(2015)

Mixed Feelings
There were things to like about this series. Some of the acting was quite good - Denis Menochet was remarkable. Marc-Andre Grondin certainly had his moments but his brooding and the constant look on his face of disgust or anger or hopelessness or whatever it was, got a little old. There were some plot twists, some pausible but many more, implausible. Overall I had very mixed feelings about this series. It didn't help that I couldn't separate Brendan Coyle from his role in this versus his role in Downton Abbey.

A Kind of Murder
(2016)

Marsan is Great
Eddie Marsan is great, as always. Jessica Biel is miscast. Storyline is disjointed and far fetched. I would say this is 1958 or 1959 - not the 60's as stated in the synopsis. Patrick Wilson tries hard to make it all believable but it's not enough to carry the film.

It's a Man's World
(1962)

Certainly one of the best TV shows of the 60's.
I was 14 when this show first aired and I thought it was wonderful! I have no brothers so it was fascinating to me to see these 4 men and their lives. The show has stayed with me all these years and its thrilling to see that others have forgotten it either. Oh how'd I'd love to see it again. IAMW, Star Trek and Rocky & Bullwinkle were my favorites. After the 1970's I stopped watching network television because its so dumbed down. I think Hill Street Blues was probably the last show I admired. I did like Barney Miller though. It was sad to learn that Glenn Corbett died. I don't think he ever had a role after IAMW that suited him as well.

Planet of the Apes
(2001)

Don't waste your time or your money.
Tim Burton, Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth - could it be that bad?? Yes!! Its that bad and worse. Don't waste your time or your money. I did not expect much but thought I would at least be somewhat entertained. I was wrong. This movie is boring and stupid. The same things seemed to be happening repeatedly and pointlessly. Roth's was the only part that had any kind of emotion or character. On the surface there should have been tension in the plot but none whatsoever was conveyed. The dullness of the characters and even the so-called action scenes, was astounding. There is no mystery about the ending of the film and it would be another waste of time to try to decipher one. I suppose it would have been an even worse film if there had been no "surprise" at the conclusion - but I'm not so sure. I think the end just added another note of idiocy. Its difficult to understand why any critic would ever recommend this film.
