Blue Beetle
(2023)

The Penultimate DCEU Outing...
It's got charm. Similar to the first Shazam movie. Not the second one. Let's not talk about The Fury of the Gods. Susan Sarandon shows up at the start and the end. Earns her pay check. The female protagonist has this odd speech thing that sounds almost Dutch. The main guy has a family. They are all parts of his personality. It's actually the only subtle part of this movie until it isn't. Everything just seems too convenient. The actual premise is vague. We've got Scarabs and super powers and every trope there is. For a bit I thought it was just like a DC version of Iron Man. Susan Sarandon should really not be doing this type of movie. Let's hope Aquaman 2 can end this DCEU extravaganza properly.

Oh and the comedian Mexican guy is also in it. Not the one from Ant Man.

Peter Pan & Wendy
(2023)

A star for the 3 cuts where Wendy's mouth wasn't wide open
Was she in awe the whole time? I mean, the editor, director and other crew must have noticed that during the run of the film, Wendy's mouth is open. They left it in. Was too late. Maybe a new acting school thing they're teaching to show interest. Whatever. The movie is just bland paint by the numbers. Jude law tries. My kids did too. I finished it. They did not. I know Disney is morally and creatively bankrupt at this point, but this is just soulless. The director did a good job on the action sequences, everyone plays their part but why? We know the Peter Pan story and this doesn't add anything to it. Except a wide open mouth for flies to enter. CLOSE YOUR MOUTH WENDY.

Star Trek: Picard: Imposters
(2023)
Episode 5, Season 3

A Conspiracy Thriller
It felt like a thriller to me. They've established that the changelings can essentially be anyone at this point and for Picard and Ro to have a full on head to head to discover they're still the same hard headed Starfleet officers was some of the best Trek writing since the 90s.

It beautifully wraps up Ro's storyline and even let's you feel her motivations better than before.

I love the tension that the Changeling doubt brings about. There's an uneasy feeling that around every corner there might be an Impostor!

Jacks storyline is still evolving and I'm looking forward to seeing who is talking to him.

Raffi is saved by Worf. I still can't stand her or her acting. She's that reminder of season 1 and 2. Bad taste. But like I said Worf redeems all. Now that the A and B plot have crossed paths let's get to the endgame! Make it so!

Star Trek: Picard: The Next Generation
(2023)
Episode 1, Season 3

Forget Season 1 and 2. Start here
This is how you properly bring The Next Generation into the future. Some fun banter and references, great music cues. Fantastic visual effects and sound design. I'm not sure if they can keep this up for the duration of the season but this is such a great start. The previous seasons also had pretty decent first episodes so I am weary but optimistic because the new show runners seem to get it. There are a few scenes that are taken straight from older Trek movies like when they leave space dock and my god I had the chills. Only concern is the Raffi subplot. She doesn't do it for me. Never has. I know they'll tie her into Seven and their relationship but I just don't care. Bring on the rest of the season!!

The Gray Man
(2022)

Weak sauce
This movie is further proof that "lightning in a bottle" can happen for Directors and their screen writers. Endgame/Infinity War this is not.

This is just run of the mill COVID production Netflix drivel. Utterly disappointed in this movie. Actors acted, music played. It was all there. It didn't mean a thing. They somehow try and make it sequel bait at the end of top of it? For shame.

Jurassic World Dominion
(2022)

Classic "And Then" storytelling right here
Nothing leads to a "because" or "therefore", its all "and then" this happens. Screenwriting 101...A complete mess of a movie with no actual story and the only enjoyable parts are when there's actually DINOSAURS which is about 15 minutes of the run time. Complete disaster of a movie.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe
(2022)

Return to form
While I appreciated the short lived reboot from about a decade ago, this bests it in every way. Great ridiculous story with some classic Beavis and Butthead scenarios. Mike Judge has outdone himself.

The Orville: Shadow Realms
(2022)
Episode 2, Season 3

Who is this made for?
This is not the same show it was. COVID clearly made the writing team have to phone it in. This is a super jump scare filled mess of an episode that just doesn't work. When this show was a light parody of TNG it was cute. Now it's a copy of TNG and it's just sad. Reduce the budget, focus on the story. I'm ok with recycled ship fly byes!

Raised by Wolves: The Collective
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 2

Deserves a Razzie for Special Effects
The shot of the ship flying in the opening scene is some of the best worst CGI I've ever seen. It's clear Ridley Scott has nothing to do with this. Just picture that opening shot from Blade Runner, then pour bleach in your eyes and you've got the scene from this steaming pile of wolf dung.

Eternals
(2021)

So many words...So little else
What a run time. I was looking at my watch the whole time. My wife went to bed and simply said this sucks. She loves MCU. This is not MCU. This is a little blip we'll forget about. Move along now, nothing to see here.

Chaos Walking
(2021)

Come for Tom Holland, stay for Daisy Ridleys wig
Quite possibly the worst wig in cinematic history. This film is devoid of logic. I have no idea what just happened. At least we get a shirtless Tom Holland at the end. And Daisy Ridleys wig, of course.

F9
(2021)

There's a movie in here somehwere...
I swear, they're still trying to give us a narrative to hold onto like we have in the past and for the most part they pull off the "family" aspect well. Its the superhero stuff and the planes waiting for them like they're a government agency stuff I can't see past. Action was amazing, great effects and editing! Its still impressive to watch and for that I give them a generous 5 star rating. Regardless of what we all think you know there will be a sequel, and I hope they go back to basics (no space pls) and give us a proper FF movie.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
(2021)

Could have been reduced to 3 episodes
The finale was the payoff we needed after a rather uneventful 5 previous episodes. I say uneventful because as much as things happen...I can't recall what said things were. Some well dressed and well fed people stand around while a red headed girl with some freckles and a cockney accent talks about taking down the man. The fun Sam/Bucky chemistry is non existent for 3/4 of the series run. The biggest shame is how well Marvel has done so far with being somewhat political, but this is just heavy handed. They're searching for symbolism and things we can relate to, but to be honest after the past year I'd rather escape in the Milano to a far off place of the galaxy and forget this series ever happened.

Playing with Power: The Nintendo Story
(2021)

They didn't even mention Satoru Iwata...for shame
When Satoru Iwata died, we, the gaming community mourned the loss of one of the freshest game developers to work his way up to running one of Japan's largest companies. The fact that this documentary left him completely out of the documentary knocks points off for me. This is a very well crafted and planned out docu-series with some great interviews from past competitors and Nintendo staff. Its broken into 5 parts, all dealing with a rise and fall, ending on Nintendo's biggest gamble and rise; The Switch. Give this a watch if you're in any way nostalgic as I am. There's a montage near the end of the series that encapsulates all that Nintendo is to me, they've been a part of my life and are already a part of my children's lives. Long live the BIG N!

The Goldbergs
(2013)

Stop at Season 6
Many great shows end too early. We cherish them and wonder what could have been. That wonder is what keeps a show in the back of our minds. Even more shows go on too long. This show has gone on too long to the point where the writers don't take the time to progress the characters. They're stuck in the same storylines from 3 years ago and in many ways the characters have regressed from the depth they grew over the first few seasons. The charm and heart is gone. The mother is creepy now. Adam is cringey. His brother is becoming more and more dim witted it hurts. His sister is always mad and the way they represent her relationship with her boyfriend is juvenile. The dad is still good, he's Murray. I just read that Adam F. Goldberg isn't even involved in the show anymore and it all makes sense. Make this suffering stop. My rating for the first 6 seasons is 8. Final two seasons are 1 so it brings down the average.

Psycho Goreman
(2020)

Great Practical effects
I had my doubts. Usually something campy and produced on a smaller budget can wear out its welcome fast. This movie somehow got better as it progressed. First off, the visual effects are OUT OF THIS WORLD. So imaginative and fresh and PRACTICAL. This is the greatest strength of the movie, it has a grounded visual flair that I honestly haven't experienced since I was a kid. The little girl can be insufferable at times, but PG is the hammiest hilarious destroyer of galaxies you've ever seen on screen. The gore is over the top but they forego expletives and instead use the word "Frick" instead. I love the boundless imagination this movie has. Its well written, well executed and delivers on its promise of being an old school fun gore fest B movie from the 80's. Highly recommend to people who are into this style of movie ********

Wonder Woman 1984
(2020)

Stick behind the camera, Patty
When a director is given too much freedom..you get what we have here. Failure to communicate the story she had in her head. This is why there are professional writers, screenwriters and then directors. Clearly the success of the first Wonder Woman let Jenkins call the shots and not be controlled by the powers that may be at Warners. Unfortunately, she appears to have gained too much control and the result is this movie. No spoilers. Its just a boring film to get through. There is a roughly 70 minute 2nd act where noting happens, action-wise. There are some exposition dumps but other than that nothing of consequence. This is a big step back for the DCEU. They'd had some moderate creative success and I suppose we'll have to wait for James Gunn's Suicide Squad to get the taste of 1984 out of our collective mouths.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga
(2020)

Solid effort with a big heart
Its overly long, yes. But this is easily Will Ferrells' best movie in years. Rachel McAdams is a great fit too! I loved the very European theme and the music was seriously solid. Definitely worth a watch if you enjoy making fun of Americans and looking at how gosh darn good looking Pierce Brosnan is!

Slappy and the Stinkers
(1998)

What is up with Stifler's moms voice?
So Stifflers mom is in this. But she does this accent. It's like half deaf person half Swedish. It distracts me. It's a good thing. This movie sucks.

Tiger King: The Tiger King and I
(2020)
Episode 8, Season 1

Unnecessary
If you can get past the first 2 minutes I hope you realize how unnecessary this is on a profound level. Joel McHale spends more time being a cocky self indulgent host than a journalist of any sorts. A shame. Shame on you Joel.

Spring Breakdown
(2009)

If you think it can't be as bad as they say you are wrong
It is terrible. It is not even so bad it's good. I have a strange disability that forces me to finish a movie no matter what and this really broke me to my core. Absolute garbage.

Midway
(2019)

Laughably bad
I wish this was in the "so bad its good" category, but alas, it is just plain bad. Ed Skrein is such a strange choice for a hero, and the fact that he's married to Mandy Moore in this? I think its just miscast. The action, although bombastic is so clearly green screened when the actors are in it. It has a sheen to it like the Star Wars prequels. It was painful to watch this story unfold, a competent cast but a flawed film.

The Affair: Episode #5.11
(2019)
Episode 11, Season 5

I have issues with this show...many issues
What started off as a 2 prong story in season 1 was diluted into this crap. I just dont understand how the finale can give people satisfaction. "Beautiful ending" and "This is the way to end a series" were not going through my head at all. First of all, the "dance" in the last scene. They expect me to think back fondly of this dance, when in truth they hamfistedly forced it down my throat throughout the episode. If this was some family dance that had been around throughout the series, I'd understand, but they're being sentimental for something they just wrote? I'm just at a loss. So we spend 10 episodes in season 5 focusing on Noah being basically a sexual predator and Rogue from XMEN is addicted to rough sex all for it to be thrown by the wayside so Noah can do some dance at the end? I have issues with this show...many issues. A truly terrible ending to a show that showed much promise but failed on every level in the final season. Complete waste of my time. For shame.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 4: Sanctuary
(2019)
Episode 4, Season 1

A step back...
Felt like an episode of Stargate SG1 at points. Had the cheesy local population with a problem the SG1 team...err...Mandalorian had to fix...all filmed in what is obviously British Columbia... Weak story in this one, but not all can be gold. Lets hope next one is better.

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

Didn't need Linda Hamilton and REALLY didn't need Arnold
The first 20 minutes before Sarah Connor showed up were intense and really impressive. Then she shows up and takes over the movie for no reason. Mackenzie Davis as Grace was more than competent enough to carry this movie. Then they shoehorn in Arnold with a really questionable reason to exist and you've got a broken movie. Seriously, they didn't need to tell us that "Skynet sent a bunch of other Terminators" and then have that as the excuse to have Arnold in this. He's 25 years past his prime, 4 years since the last disastrous Terminator. This is a serviceable action movie made by a great director, but the 15 screenwriters and 12 story credits really start to show after the first act. Huge letdown, but decent action flick if you have no prior Terminator love.
