Le samouraï
(1967)

You've got to be kidding!
This film is absolutely ridiculous! There is a police "line-up" where a number men are wearing trench coats and hats, yet throughout the entire picture the main character is the only person on the street and in the extremely bright night club wearing a hat! Yes he's beautiful and the colors are lovely to look at. One could get caught up in his coolness but this film is as thin as the paper the script was written on. The piano player's part is reminiscent of Gloria Grahame in "In A Lonely Place", toying with a dangerous man but there is no chemistry because there is no tenderness in Jef Costello. The real criminal is the police commissioner. Many people love this film, I am not one of them.

The Quick and the Dead
(1995)

Wow! The lack of chemistry between any of these characters is astounding
The only interesting character is Lance Henriksen's and his part is so small that his talents are truly wasted. Stone is so cold that you don't know why you would even want to root for her. Ellen's not particularly smart and isn't believable. Hackman's evil is ridiculous and predictable. The mystery of Crowe's character is lost. I had heard this was bad and debated whether to continue after getting halfway through it. I didn't. This film makes me not want to ever watch another Sam Raimi film because it is so poorly executed. It is due for a serious remake with some better character development and dialogue.

Klaus
(2019)

Ugh! Terrific animation, crappy story
So horribly formulaic, as others have said, poor character development and so epically predictable. Santa's story didn't need to be rewritten this badly. If you want a good spoiled brat turned good story with interesting villains go rent "The Emperor's New Groove". If you want to see decent heroics go rent "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe". The animation in this one is prettier but pretty doesn't mean better. The voice talent is decent enough, but that all. The jokes are just bad and characters do a lot of things that don't make a lot of sense unless you are a depressive type and we all know how that makes for fun entertainment!

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson
(2019)

The title of this show is a clue to the audience to leave!
If you want to listen to someone talk about human emissions and genitalia, then this is the show for you. This isn't clever, and has an inordinate amount of bathroom humor. Robinson is a potty mouth and thinks that a dog humping his head is hilarious. The potty humor goes on far too long and your time would be better spent with "Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun". If you want something smart and funny, look elsewhere. I suspect Robinson is doing favors for someone to get this series made. Whoever is giving him the money for this should be embarrassed to put their name in the credits. I can only guess that prepubescent boys are ranking this highly.

The Family Plan
(2023)

Odenkirk and Schwarzenegger did it better.
Ridiculous movie. Knowing the premise sets you up for disappointment especially if you have even heard of, let alone seen, Arnold Schwarzenegger's "True Lies" or Bob Odenkirk's "Nobody". Both far superior to this film. A minor difference being they strap in a toddler into this film and use far too many cut away shots of the kid reacting to the mayhem. The storyline is far too predictable, and there are no plot twists that you don't see coming from miles away. Wahlberg has no chemistry with anyone he is playing opposite. Your time would be better spent with "Spenser Confidential" than this potboiler. The two adult women are wasted in this movie, the teenage storyline could have been written by any high school freshman. This is a money grab by everyone involved and not worth any viewer's time.

Will Trent
(2023)

Interesting characters, crappy plots
Seriously, the characters are complex and interesting, but the writing is absolute garbage. Common sense and logic are out the window for the storylines There is no one reviewing procedures or process for the cops and investigators and it is leaving huge gaps in the plots of the episodes. Unfortunately it makes some of the story arcs predictable. I wish it was better. I really wish it was better. The characters are interesting, Betty is frikkin' adorable. Will Trent is quirky, smart, Faith is strong and confident, Angie is fragile and for once it is her male partner who is essentially the hooker with the heart of gold in a masculine sort of way. I just wish the writers had a clue.

Elvis
(2022)

Just No
What is it with these biopics that can't tell a story without some gimimick. The gimmick in this film is a fat suit and a horrible Tom Hanks accent. Ten minutes in and I was done. This is the Elvis story on speed. We all know that Parker had an influence on Elvis but do we need a film that focuses on Parker in this way? I couldn't get past it which is really too bad because I was enjoying Austin whathisname as Elvis. Same died blond hair, heavy eyelids as Elvis, a nice bit of eye candy, but the film is god awful. It's so far removed from the heart of what made the king the king and I just couldn't stomach it to continue watching.

Bullet Train
(2022)

Jerry Welbach grows up to be in Bullet Train
After marrying Sam and things not working out, of course, Jerry Welbach continues his hapless path. He becomes an assassin in an organization of killers and thieves and after a nervous breakdown and some much needed therapy ends up on a high speed train to retrieve a case under the watchful eye of his handler Maria. You'll wonder who is double crossing whom and whether this was Tarantino rip-off of an Asian action flick minus the tricky dialog with loads of explanatory, explosive flashbacks. Regardless, this is a fun thrill ride that barely makes sense but you can't help cheering for Jerry the whole ride!

Hap and Leonard
(2016)

Season one was a fun ride, skip the other two seasons
Seriously, what happened to this series! Season one was so much fun, there were twists and double crosses and the lead characters were great. Season two turned into something else, barely tolerable and predictable at best. Season three is intolerable. I couldn't get through the second episode. The chemistry between the two leads is fun. Leonard is surly and enjoyable. He does a lot of things we wish we could get away with. You might appreciate the chip on his shoulder. Hap is a sap. He's ruggedly handsome and old boy charming, but still the character is a sap. Watch the first season and then walk away.

The Witcher
(2019)

Season one was great, then season 2 happened
Wow, how did this get to be so bad!? Maybe it's the two year gap because of the pandemic. Season one was enjoyable to watch, but three episodes into season two and the writers must have had some kind of a breakdown because the stories are now awful! We are now in the overly predictable phase with no surprises and poor character development.

Die Austernprinzessin
(1919)

Silent film with modern title cards
Why?! The title cards are no way appropriate for the era. The music is great and appropriate but the title cards are not. I hate this! Why is IMDB forcing me to add more words for a review? Some people are more succinct than others! For Pete's sake!

Red Notice
(2021)

Gawd, this is so bad!
Predictable, check, check and double check. No story, no chemistry and a lot of money wasted. People who rate this film have never seen a good movie and have incredibly low expectations. If you are going to watch this then turn it on in the background while your attention is elsewhere because you will miss nothing by being distracted.

I Wake Up Screaming
(1941)

Not so noir
This film can't make up its mind. It's as if multiple people wrote the screenplay, part comedy, part drama with very little noir. The worst part is the overuse of "Street Scene" and "Over the Rainbow". There are some good licks in the penultimate scene, its straight out of film noir, but there's too much romance and the only hard dame is the dead one.

Santa Clarita Diet
(2017)

Three episodes in and I'm done
I admit many people enjoyed this show and were disappointed when it was cancelled. I cannot say I am surprised. The writing is predictable and as one note as Barrymore herself. It is is not difficult to figure out who will be a victim and the only one surprised is Olyphant and he does it unconvincingly. It is mind numbing to watch this show and yes this is what some people crave.

The Many Saints of Newark
(2021)

Not worth your time
I wanted to like this film, but I simply could not. There was no character I could connect with. This film lacked the richness and depth of characters that six plus seasons of "The Sopranos" was allowed to develop. The characters from the series that appear in the film are so unrecognizable in appearance and personality that it is as if no one involved in the series was associated with this film. Worst of these was the casting of Johnny Boy Soprano. I cringed every time the actor appeared on screen. The only saving grace was seeing Michael Gandolfini slip into the mantle of the young Anthony Soprano. Though the story line faltered his portrayal of a younger version of the beloved Tony rang true. Seeing how badly the overall film played out i wonder if this would have fared better as a mini-series. It certainly would have given time to build tension for what ended up being a blatantly obvious ending.

The Suicide Squad
(2021)

The worst
Incoherent predictable garbage! I'm so glad I didn't pay money for this. James Gunn must have been on drugs when he wrote this. He needs to get to rehab stat!

Supermarket Sweep
(2020)

It's about time!
Leslie Jones is such a great host! She brings her sass and swagger! She is the reason I started to watch and I love the humor she brings to the show from the jokes with the "security" guy and ribbing with the head checker to her encouragement of the contestants. This is a game show of the modern age! Episode 2 had me crying!

Thunder Force
(2021)

Missing so much but there are worse films
I love Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer is a wonderful dramatic actress. Unfortunately whatever has made these ladies friends for the past twenty years does nothing for their chemistry in this film. The script struggles, the premise is barely a good start. Two women, who are over forty years old, become superheroes. Spencer's character is so one dimensional it hurts to watch this. McCarthy plays a lot of the same jokes she has played in other films yet again. They threw in a daughter for Spencer and it's an embarrassment for the young actress playing the part. What works in this film? Bobby Cannavale has some funny bits with his staff and Justin Bateman plays up his character well opposite McCarthy. It is a real shame that this is a women's movie but the female characters are the worst developed. I saw that part of the team that works on Archer contributed to this film, too bad the Archer team didn't write the script.

The Killers
(1964)

The original is so much better
Cassavetes has no chemistry with Dickinson! Her character isn't as well defined as Ava Gardner's in the original. Cassavetes has no intensity like Lancaster. He is a competitive race car driver and has nothing! Marvin and Gulager have more chemistry and intensity and are the only thing that saves this film.

Cast a Deadly Spell
(1991)

Ugh!
This has the worst dialog of any detective film I have ever seen! The dialog doesn't click, it isn't crisp. The monsters are gooey and not even scary. This is a shame because Fred Ward is a generally goos, but he could not save this film.

The American Barbecue Showdown
(2020)

Hosts add nothing
They are not Padma Lakshmi nor are they Noel and Sandy. If they could bring any of the charisma, style or charm to that these folks bring to Top Chef or The Great British Baking Show I could tolerate them. They are talking heads with no charm and add nothing to this show. Without the hosts this show could develop a real following.

The Monuments Men
(2014)

Uneven but a necessary story
The story is uneven, Cate Blanchett is wonderful, the sets and lighting are beautifully done. Drama/comedies are hard to pull off and this film is proof. If Clooney had gone more comedic or more towards the drama it would have done better. The basic story is true, the Nazis also burned pieces symbolically and used art to finance the war. It is a complicated story for certain.

Stuber
(2019)

Fun and cheesy
Kumail's one liners made me laugh out loud on a flight home. He is the hapless Stu but with a heart. Realistic? Hell no! Foreshadowing galore? Hell yes! Fun? Absolutely!

High Society
(1956)

So much talent, so little chemistry and charm
I really wanted to like this film. It's a musical! There is singing with Bing and Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong and this just does not work! Grace Kelly as beautiful as she is comes off as a bigger snob than Katharine Hepburn ever could be in the original film. This film lacks the charm of the original and the young woman playing Caroline is grating. While Virginia Weidler was just charming and adorable. In the original film the relationship between the older and younger sister is evident in this film they barely tolerate each other. The entire chemistry is all wrong. I tried many times to watch this entire film and failed. I was only able to get through it once and I never want to go through that experience again. I would much rather watch the "Philadelphia Story" a dozen times over because it has so much that this film lacks! I recommend that you do the same!

Yentl
(1983)

Barbra at her most self absorbed
This film is only for the true Barbara fans. If you want to hear the beautiful tones of Mandy Patinkin go somewhere else because they are not in this musical movie. Barbara might've won the Oscar for directing if she would stop singing and just done a play. Because the singing is more of a distraction than an enhancement. It's really a shame because as a play, this would've been great. So watch this movie with your finger on the fast-forward button and you'll be fine!
