ClearMind
(2024)

Clever drama about the mind
What would you do if you could live thoughts of revenge through VR? Can Virtual reality heal trauma? These are questions that this indie gem asks and answers quite well. What makes all this work is the clever writing, the clear direction and the amazing performances that the actors give, especially Rebecca Creskoff.

Also, the concept itself is pretty awesome. Get all your friends together at a cabin and grab an axe! Is it real or is it just a game? Are the loss and the grief real?

I also enjoyed that it's a mix match of genres, it's funny but it's also dramatic, it's a thriller but it's also a sci fi. If you want a movie that challenges you, give this one a go.

Metamorphosis
(2022)

Great psychological horror
I'm not a fan of slasher horrors so this slow burn, character driven psychological horror was a breath of fresh air. There are 3 main characters in this gem, the man, the woman and the location and the connection between the 3 is what makes it work. The man is going through life altering changes, the woman is trying to hold on to her sanity and the setting glues them in. It's unsettling, creepy and beautiful in the same time.

The Extraordinary Ordinary
(2019)

Finding your way
This indie gem is a coming of age drama about a young woman Erica who is battling mental health issues while trying to heal the wounds of the past. She finds community in fellow sufferers and begins exploring a new romantic relationship. But the journey to healing is never easy or straightforward.

If you enjoy serious dramas, give this one a go.

Chasing After You
(2019)

Between love and faith
This beautiful indie explores the conflict within a woman between love and faith when she meets a man who's spiritual journey is different. As she tries to navigate through her oposing feelings her discoveries create a lot of distress.

If you enjoy romantic movies as well as religious films, watch it as it's an awsome combination of the two.

6 Hearts 1 Beat
(2013)

The power of love
You can't choose who you fall in love with, however loving someone despite hardship and adversity is a choice. This movie explores the complexities of a relationship and the family dynamics when children are involved. It's a beautiful character study of an abandoned family and how they all learn to heal.

If you enjoy family dramas give this on a go.

Pelícano
(2019)

Dark melodrama
This is a heavy artistic drama that develops slowly through a series of flashbacks. The story follows a selfish mother who's choices tend to destroy those around her. It's a character driven drama that relies on a crafty script, great cinematography and a silky piano score. If this sounds like your cup of tea, give it a go.

Mute
(2018)

Original but uneven Sci Fi Drama
If you like sci-fi and dramas, this movie is for you. If you are expecting a fast paced thriller, you will be disappointed. The acting is top notch, especially Paul Rudd. The production design also deserves praise. The story is as original as possible. This could have been an excellent movie however the pacing makes the movie really drag on.

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard
(2021)

It's exactly what you expected
You get Ryan Raynolds doing what he does best and then you have Sam L. Jackson doing what he does best, ohhh and then you have Antonio Banderas doing what he does best!!! It's more comedy than thriller, but the movie never takes itself seriously and neither should we. The plot is ridiculous, the action scenes are even more ridiculous but man, it's just dumb fun! And that's exactly what the doctor ordered.

Archenemy
(2020)

More heart than Marvel
Look guys, it's an indie, with a lot of heart and a small budget. But I swear it was more fun than the last few Marvel or DC attempts. It actually had a story to tell and didn't rely solely on VFX. Give this one a Go!

F9
(2021)

I used to enjoy fast and furious...
But it's sinking lower and lower and I'm losing my patience with it. Just as an experiment, watch the first one which is a solid film, with some character development and realistic scenes and then watch this... The first one had 10% of the budget F9 has yet it's 10 times better. Maybe the producers should just do the same, go back to basics and end this franchise on the high note before we see F11 on Nickelodeon.

Black Widow
(2021)

Meh- not bad, but nothing extraordinary either.
This new instalment could have been awsome. Instead you get the same old, tired formula. A lot of unnecessary fight scenes (the one between the sisters who first try to stab each other, then one says "peace " and all is forgotten).

The villain is basically a Bond villain copy, not very menacing. The action and CGI are good and there are a few funny scenes.

Both Scarlet and Florence are great actresses, unfortunately they don't have a lot to work with.

All in all, you get what you paid for, a no brainer popcorn flick, nothing more, nothing less.

Texas Killing Fields
(2011)

Solid thriller
This movie is moody, dark and well directed. Solid acting and a great storyline. It's not original nor without flaws but really good nonetheless. A solid 7 from me.

Supernova
(2020)

Tender lovestory
This is a beautiful film about love, commitment and loss. Tucci and Firth both give amazing performances. It's slow, tender yet angry in parts, and shows how far someone would go to protect the one he loves.

Song One
(2014)

This is an indie at it's best
Sure, it's not mainstream, it's not for everyone but it has lots of heart and cool indie music. Perfect for a Saturday night in.

Army of the Dead
(2021)

Cool concept, average execution
This is a popcorn movie so looking at it as such it was entertaining. It has an original approach on the zombies but the execution was formulatic. Not special but entertaining non the less.

RocknRolla
(2008)

Guy Ritchie at it's best
This movie is soooo much fun. Great humour, witty dialogue, original concept and execution.

It's a hybrid between the gangster genre and a heist genre, pepered with comedy. Excellent performances from the whole cast.

If you like Guy Ritchie style, you will love this.

Brightburn
(2019)

Great concept, good execution
I really enjoyed the reverse take on the SuperHero genre mixed with horror elements. This movie is original and captivating. It has it's flaws but it's entertaining none the less.

The Woman in the Window
(2021)

What psychological thrillers should look like
I really don't understand how people can give this movie such low ratings. As far as acting, direction, production quality goes it's excellent. Fans of the book, don't expect a movie to capture the whole complexity of 350 pages in 2 hours of film. It's impossible. Enjoy it for what it is, an adaptation where creative licence plays an important part.

I recommend this movie to everyone who likes psychological thrillers.

Introspectum Motel
(2021)

The sexiest thriller since the original basic instinct
Watched this last night at a friend's house because it was recommended by a Facebook group. I went in without big expectations but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It's by no means a flawless film, but considering the fact that it's an indie with a smaller budget, it looks great. The acting is solid throughout and the story puts a fresh perspective on adultery. There are a few steamy sex scenes shoot very tastefully but it's definitely not for prudes. If you are offended by sex, you should not watch it. I am not so I quite enjoyed it.

Another aspect that surprised me were the twists, especially in the last half an hour. I did not see a few things coming.

If you are looking for something different, that isn't afraid to push the boundaries, give this film a go.
