The Silence of the Lambs
(1991)

Good adaptation, but aging
I had watched this film some decades ago and loved it. As it usually happens, after reading the book, I have started feeling that the adaptation was missing some aspects that make the novel more enjoyable. Particularly, I have a problem with the adaptation of the character of Jame Gumb. The essence of the novel is his hatred for his own body, and in the film we see him covered in tattoos and piercing, dancing quite confidently... -.- When it comes to performances, I guess Hannibal has started to age. Perhaps we are now used to more realistic portrayals of serial killers, and not presentations that seem almost parodic.

This film is still worth watching, but it has started to show some signs of wear and tear.

The Adam Project
(2022)

No need to make films like these
I get it... there are Ryan Reynolds's fans and nostalgic viewers that feel like watching cheap unrealistic scifi with weak plotlines done with current technology. But the rest of the film watchers don't deserve to be put through such an ordeal.

The storyline is either too simple or incredibly complex: Go back in time and change the future, in this case by destroying time travel. By now, so many films have been made on that, many quite memorable, that it could be quite interesting to see in which ways the scriptwriter solves problems like: what happens with the memory of people that time-travel? This film always chooses the worst and silliest solutions, for instance: they just forget everything. Ok...

Then we have Reynolds playing the smart guy, Buffalo playing the scientist, and so on... so we get the idea: come and play what you did in other films. Young Adam is probably the most successful character, quite cheeky, entertaining and fresh.

The film does take some breaks in the action, for the father-and-son conflict mainly. These parts are quite boring an cliche, and I guess not many people would feel moved by it.

Is it worth watching? I regret having done it. Those of us who have watched low-budget, poorly-scripted films in the 90s are left wondering why we end up watching a film like this. I guess that the audience is constantly renewed and each generation wants to regret having watched horrible films like this when they were young. So... help yourselves.

Gran Torino
(2008)

Great well-produced and executed classic
I believe Clint Eastwood managed to put together an incredible film that is both thrilling and inspiring. The themes of racism, immigration, the aftermath of WWII and family ties are effectively problematized.

The choice of assimilating with Walt Kowalski's perception is quite clever and respected throughout the film by not translating from Hmong, for instance. I also enjoyed the religion imagery that tinges the film as a whole.

The weakest point of the film is Thao's acting, which is particularly poor when he has to show feelings like sadness or desperation. Otherwise, the rest of the cast are quite enjoyable.

I believe it is a classic worth watching and that has resisted quite efficiently the passing of time.

Atypical: Antarctica
(2017)
Episode 1, Season 1

Catchy entertaining first episode
This opening certainly introduces both characters and themes of the series in an extremely effective way. Peppered with funny scenes, the series manages to present Sam's and his family's lives: all of them shaped by Sam's condition.

Zahid already stands out, even being a secondary character, as an incredible comic relief. He adds humour and strikes a balance compensating for Sam's innocent perception of reality.

The choice of Antartica and penguins as the motif to allow the character to reflect upon life is both hilarious and profound.

The story of the parents is somewhat slow at times, but it certainly adds a layer of complexity to the series.

Definitely worth watching.

The Guilty
(2021)

Tense but 90 minutes were too much
I had the feeling that I was watching Jake Gyllenhaal in a theater play, and as far as that goes and considering the low budget, the film does succeed in creating tension.

Yet, locating the action for such a long time in a dark office puts way too much pressure on Gyllenhaal acting skills to keep the audience interested, which does not always pay off.

At times too slow and with some parts quite effective, it is a film to watch with low expectations... perhaps as low as the budget.

The Good Place
(2016)

Amusing food for thought
I've just watched season 1 for the second time, and I believe this show is quite entertaining. It strikes a difficult balance in presenting philosophical questions and references while it still keeps it simple, understandable for general audiences and funny. It's not hilarious, but quite funny.

The cast has been well-chosen and the plot twists keep the series alive, although some are less effective.

I guess this series is ideal to share and discuss with friends, since the issues raised are very profound.
