The Other Black Girl
(2023)

Be so Effing For Real. Dont Watch This!
What?! Look, the show isn't bad if you were to take out a couple of concepts. I like the idea that this other black girl is secretly out to get the only other black girl in the workspace. The smile in your face, but will stab you in the back kind of thing is intriguing. But, this show is not that. Yes, the other black girl IS trying to get the MC into her cult BUT hell, if I'm being honest, id sign up voluntarily. Id become a strong, independent successful black woman with a great job and great opportunities? Whats so scary about that?! And this show has a couple of scenes where the MC sees a ghost in her reflection? But thats never explained?

And then turns out the other black girl uses hair grease to mind control people? HUH? Be so serious. Who thought this was a good idea?

A Murder at the End of the World
(2023)

PRETENTIOUS. SLOW. PRETENTIOUS.
To be honest, I knew this show was going to be bad after the first episode. But, I kept watching it because my boyfriend wanted to. After watching 5 episodes together, hes finally on the same page as I am. WE HATE IT.

I personally had an immediate issue with the format; how they switch timelines from present to past. This kind of storytelling always falls flat in my opinion. The flashbacks are pointless, the attempt to have you become emotionally attached to the characters doesn't work and it distracts you from the main storyline. And, I had a distinct gut feeling the show was going to be artsy and pretentious. I was right.

Spoilers, I guess (even though I hope you don't watch this): three people have died and yet it feels like nothing has happened. I'm not scared for any of the characters. In fact, I don't like any of them. I have no interest in who the killer is or why. And if I was, id be SO out of luck because there are NO clues as to who it'd be. But hmm, maybe the reason why I have no idea is because the main character is a terrible amateur detective who's making it painfully obvious yet shes supposed to be a genius.

Which reminds me that all of them are geniuses yet seem to be doing nothing on this retreat. Whats the point of it again? Climate change? The development of AI? Changing the world? While also being about one of them being a serial killer yet everyone refuses to isolate themselves in their rooms. Maybe its because they all like to hear themselves talk. Everything these people say feels so forcibly intellectual and pretentious. The dialogue is probably the worst part. These people do NOT speak like real humans. So, yeah, were done watching it.

Chloe
(2022)

Unsurprising and even more unlikeable
This review may contain spoilers.

Ill start by mentioning what I did like about the show since theres more I dislike than love. The actors are good. I have no issues with the writing. But, thats it.

The overall plot of the show is about a girl obsessed with a very old childhood friend. When she learns she dies, she becomes even more obsessed over why and how. So she then decides to create a fake persona and integrate herself into her old dead friends close friend group AND start a sexual and romantic relationship with her widowed husband? She became an extremely unlikeable character from the very start.

I had hoped that with time, Id be grateful that she was doing what she was doing because maybe the friends drove Chloe to kill herself! Maybe theres something sinister and diabolical afoot! But no. You learn in the very last episode that turns out maybe most if not all of Chloes friends knew her husband was controlling and scary but did nothing to help her. And that it was *surprise, surprise* probably the husbands fault why she killed hersef.

Admittedly, I do have about 1/4 of the last episode left to watch but I was so dissatisfied and disappointed with this show that I was more excited to leave this bad review than to finally be done watching it. Promises unfulfilled.

Unbearable and slow!
The first episode grabbed my attention. But even with a good first impression, I couldn't find myself to play the next episode that same night. This speaks to what some others say about this show not being binge-worthy. Which isn't inherently a bad thing; it could just be that it's a show you need to focus on and process. But after finishing the second episode, I realized it was because it's SO slow.

I realized that the show is in actuality is really simple but tries to pass itself off as interesting. It feels so dragged out.
