Baby Reindeer
(2024)

It's not about a stalker
This is a fascinating true story about one man's experience with sexual abuse that spiraled into chaos. The stalker is the cause, not the effect. This show is easy to watch in that each episode of approximately 30-40 minutes long, they go fast but each episode packs a serious punch, there is a lot of content. The cinematography is beautiful and haunting, they've captured the loneliness and isolation. The actors are raw and terrifying, we get to see each one go trough pain, sadness, sorrow and redemption. This show stuck with me days after, I couldn't help thinking that this is what we attract when we suffer with hating ourselves, as 'Donny' says in his monologue, "I hated myself so I let her in" - there's more to this story.

The Holdovers
(2023)

Sweet 70's nostalgia
If you liked Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society, you'll love this film. It's a fun trip back to the 70's about a cranky professor and ultimately a young male student who got left back during a holiday break, here we take a ride with these two, a staff cook and a janitor. We get to see the people behind the scenes who make their college run, the meals they make and the stories they have. This was a delightful film, I enjoyed it. Giamatti is hard to come across as unlikeable, he's too charming and loveable. The lessons we learn, and the secrets we keep are the gifts we give one another. This is a terrific film.

Anger is the greatest teacher
I was ready for a comedy but it ended up something very different. The two main actors both won Golden Globes for their respective characters in 2024. I love both of them so this was definitely on my list to watch. I was blown away with the storyline, it's so much more than people with road rage revenge. This series tells the story of how repressing anger never really goes away, it shows up in our lives in the most (un) fortunate ways to teach us a lesson in forgiveness and love. The vehicle it chooses are self-loathing, secrets, lies, and self-destruction. This is a deep series cloaked in how quick we can destroy ourselves and the lessons how how to get back our humanity.

The Bear
(2022)

A lot of hype
Why all the hype? Seriously. It's ok as a drama and certainly not a comedy. There are a few funny moments but it's mostly anxiety-ridden, sad, and frankly a bit terrifying. It's a formulaic story, down-ridden characters, stuck in the past, fearful of change under the umbrella of a failing and broken restaurant. There's nothing spectacular here, it's all been done before. Season two is more of the same. A focus on families and the bonds that tie, it's a psychological study in dysfunction and how people show up in the world. It's story of a rag-tag cast of characters functioning together to rebuild themselves and their lives.

Fans of NM will love this!
If you're a fan of New Mexico/Albuquerque, this is a wonderful eye-candy experience, plenty shots of the Sandia Mountains, fan favorites like Silva Saloon and Loyola's. Definitely a treat with all the bright scenery. I loved this movie, I don't understand all the hate. Did everyone become desensitized to actual movies with storytelling, real actors, real emotions, and real locations? Is everyone jaded from CGI? This is a great film, I loved the adult romance from Tina and Jon, it felt authentic and real. The real star for me was Nic Mohammed, he steals the scene every time, he has the best comic timing and brings levity to a dark moment. This was a wonderful film, I highly recommend it.

Remember good acting? This has it
I don't understand all the vitriol and hate, this movie is a study in character building and imagery. Have people become so jaded by cartoonish-superhero effects that they need over-the-top action to think a movie is good. The dumbing-down of America has broke my heart. This is a wonderful movie, with a simple story of an already shocking event that we all know, this is the aftermath. Natalie Portman is a genius, let's all agree on this, she slowly morphs into the Moore character bit-by-bit, by dressing like her and finally speaking like her, she nailed her down. I also loved the animal references, from the cocoons and butterflies to the hunting fox scenes with both characters, that was a beautiful touch. This is a real movie with real faces, real places, and deep emotions.

The Whale
(2022)

Real, Raw and Profound
This story will resonate with many people because this is a story about humanity and all its faults. It's a story about a man who is a teacher, father and friend named Charlie, he is also a gay man who lost his lover, a man who left his wife and child and a shut-in who teaches writing at an online school. This is a conflicted man with many secrets, it's also a story about addiction and self-destruction. Most this is a story about pain, love, and forgiveness. The actors are at the top of their game, giving real and raw performances. I can't imagine anyone giving so much as Brendan Frasier does.

Look in Any Window
(1961)

I'm here for the camp
This has to be the craziest, nuttiest movie I've seen but my god, is it blast. Every character is insane and over the top. I loved the scenery, it's the perfect swinging '60's in every single way. The story is absolutely not important but it's about literally swinging couples with a few rambunctious children running around causing chaos. It's movies like this that make me appreciate the simplicity of scripts back then. If it wasn't about aliens, outer space or nuclear war then it's about being bottled up, oppressed and acting out. This is the perfect rainy day movie for fun and mischief among friends.

Young Dr. Kildare
(1938)

The origins of Dr. Gregory House
Charming and smart. A terrific story about the desire for establishing your intellectual reputation and proving oneself. It reminded me of The 'Dr. Gregory House' character on the medical drama 'House', with the Sam cantankerous, grouchy doctor and the young and scrappy intern that's looking to impress. Literally the same mellow dramatic template, loveable and interesting. The actors are wonderful, deep, charming and thoughtful, right down to the intern who traces his patient's last steps to find out where she went and who she talked with. I loved this movie, it's a nice story for anyone who likes medical drama.

Just the Way You Are
(1984)

Kristy at her sweetest
I truly don't know why people hate this movie so much. It's a rom-com from the 80's for Pete's sake, it's supposed to be fun, light and sugar sweet and this movie delightfully ticks all those boxes. I never knew it at the time but Kristy melted my heart, she had the sweet looks of a fem girl with the razor sharp charm of someone older and intuitive. She is a delightful actress who emotes in a lovely way wi5h her soft brown eyes and calm demeanor. I loved every bit of it and every time she is on screen her charm shines right thru. This is a fun movie to watch as you drink a hot cup of tea on a rainy day.

On Moonlight Bay
(1951)

Tomboy finds love
I loathe musicals, with few exceptions but the acting and fabulous characters overshadowed all the dreamy dancing and singing. Doris Day is a powerhouse of a performer, she commanded each and every scene with humor and heart. The story is classic Americana, rebellious tomboy who plays int mud and shuns all things girly-girl, only to be pushed out of her comfortable box to grow up and find a mate. Mother does a good job helping her, but father knows best, he senses his daughter is cut from a different cloth. In meets the charming boyfriend, she's soon swooning. Hijinks ensue. I loved the clumsy and snarky maid, you'll recognize her from another famous movie role and I adored the little brother. Musical and formulaic yes but hilarious definitely.

Princess O'Rourke
(1943)

His world or hers?
This is a sugar-sweet movie and Olivia is just darling in it. I loved this story, it's one of those movies you stumble on while flipping the channels, and no matter where you land, you'll immediately know the story line. It's not a complicated story, rich and privileged young woman but poor in social life and culture dares to be free, then stumbles her way to meeting by chance a down-to-earth regular Joe. Of course she doesn't tell him who she really is, but she goes along with the facade of being an average person. Hijinks ensue. Till the truth is revealed and the harsh reality of her world or his. Fun and sweet.

The Life of the Party
(1930)

Annoying
I love old movies, the older, the better but this was awful. Sure, Winnie Lightner is fun to watch, very expressive with quick and witty one-liners. Charles Ludels ruined it for me, my god, the screaming, the yelling, throwing tantrums all over the place grated on my nerves and made me unsettled. It's an ok story, same old...."down-on-their-luck showgirls seeks rich men...and lots of hijinks ensue" nothing new, same old tired vintage hollywood storyline. Some vintage movies hold up nicely with a budding star or an enlightening story, this was sad, boring, and monotonous. It's fun to watch a 90 year old movie, glad they're still around, but don't expect much here.

Reform School
(1939)

Humanity is a story as old as time
How do you change bad behavior? Bad boys reap the consequences of their actions by spending time in a typical reform school, where beatings are a normal part of life. What if it could be done another way? What would a shift in leadership look like and would it work? Enter Mother Barton, a smart and successful woman who takes over and instills a new kind of guidance. It's a very simple story of how brutality never changed anyone, only thru trust and love. People will see themselves in the best light if you dare to. It also so happens this is with an all black cast. Humanity is a story as old as time.

Monster
(2022)

They got it right
They could have got any skinny white actor to play a crazed, deprived version of Jeffrey Dahmer, and it would have been a good story but they did something very special here. They focused on the mid-western "Milwaukee" accent and muffled persona. This was the first thing that stuck out to me, as Jeffrey wasn't a man of too many words, but when he did speak it was clear, he was a product of his surroundings. They got the right actor with the perfect range for this role. It's more than just the horrors that one man inflicted, it's about everyone in his orbit. The families, friends, neighbors and businesses that he left cratering in his wake. He lived like he was invisible but the ripples from his life are being felt far and wide. This is a phenomenal series, everyone put their heart and soul into it and every scene is heartfelt and powerful. It's a must-see.

The Bobo
(1967)

Britt's Blue Man
If you like Britt Ekland, this is for you, she's the main character in this film. Sellers is a supporting character, he's in and out, almost a supporting character, but his charm is still very much felt. The chemistry between them is palpable and sweet, although this is their last pairing together. There is nothing Sellers can't play, he's a human chameleon, if you're a fan, this is a gem. The story is nutty and the dialog is nuttier but it has heart and soul. It's a fun watch, with not many laughs. It's not a zany story or filled with hijinks, but in these movies, the people are sweet and genuine, and everyone gives it their all. I'm sure the blue paint on Sellers was uncomfortable but that's the tenacity he has, he delivers.

Caccia alla volpe
(1966)

A laugh or two here and there
Another Sellers gem. More characters actors being silly and over-the-top. A wild ride of a story, lots of hijinks. The scenery is gorgeous, the people are beautiful. Sellers is in rare firm, fast, witty and present. It's the kind of movie you get a laugh or two but something you keep on while doing your nails. If you're a Sellers fan you'll appreciate it. This felt more like a showcase for his wife's career than an actual classic Peter Sellers movie, as she keeps up with the action and the blends seamlessly with the pace, she has a face that the camera loves. Overall, it showcases the genius that Peter Sellers can mimic anyone, anywhere and with perfect ease.

The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu
(1980)

Heartbreaking
You won't find a bigger Peter Sellers fan than me. I consider him a mad genius. This is hard to watch, Sellers is clearly ill and a shell of a man he use to be. This is ashamed to be his last picture. I don't know why he did it, ego perhaps. The characters are silly and all around offensive and inappropriate. The story is all over the place, it's impossible to follow, and why would you? It's nonsensical. Helen Mirren is fun to watch, great timing and delivery. The ending is mind blowing awful, who thought of an Elvis Foo-Manchoo? I clearly wasn't high enough to enjoy it. Still, it's hard to see the weakness in Sellers eyes. It broke my heart.

Meet Danny Wilson
(1952)

Who loves Frank?
Classic Sinatra, all the giddiness, and swooning love songs. It's Frank at his best. It's a fun little movie, light on its feet, a few shoot'em up moments from gangsters but to me this was really about a singer and his piano player who are smitten over the same woman. In reality, it was 'Michael' who was in love with 'Danny', and who could blame him. It's a subtle message in there, but it's there.

Bandolero!
(1968)

Leave this on in the background while you fold laundry
Just because a movie has big superstar names doesn't mean it's gonna be good, this is the movie is a good example of that.

James 'Jimmy' Stewart, Dean Martin, Raquel Welch and George Martin star in this typical shoot'em up western. The story and plot are all what you think, the script is a typical and formulaic as they come. The stand out lines are from Raquel, "I've been a wh*re since I was 13 and my family has never gone hungry". To me, Raquel outshined everyone, I liked her accent and her fervor. James was ok, seemed like he did it for the money, and Dean, yawn. Truly nothing spectacular. Yet Dean and Raquel's characters were written to be smitten yet they didn't share too much dialog.

If you like western, deserts, shoot'em up gun fights and bank robberies this is for you. I organized my toiletries while having this on and I still enjoyed it.

Nobody
(2021)

A new action hero emerges
If I could do my life over again I'd be an assassin. 'Nobody' is just that, it's a fun story of your suburban dad who gets shaken up by some thugs who break in and roughs him up - he calls on some family members for help and then the party starts. It's a little long and monotonous, plus a lot of shoot'em up's and chase scenes, which got a tad boring, but the end is satisfying. I loved seeing Christopher Lloyd as the retired and sleepy dad. It's a short movie, it's fun and who knew Bob was such a badass? Now that Bruce Willis is retired, I think we have a new action hero in our midsts.
