Singin' in the Rain
(1952)

Tuned to perfection
The movie was just pure magic. Right from the beginning till the end, I loved every scene. It got me singing and dancing too. The entire movie was so much fun to watch and listen. This is definitely my favorite musical. The large sets, the charismatic stars and perfectly choreographed sequences kept me glued to the screen.

Debbie Reynolds is just so adorable and Gene Kelly is also so charismatic on screen but my favorite performance was by Donald O'Connor as the witty friend who stole every scene he appeared.

I saw this movie 70 years after its release but it is still fresh as a new script. I recently saw Babylon and Damien Chazelle may have adapted a lot from this movie which I also enjoyed but Singing in the rain is still the best musical for me.

M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder
(1931)

Not a typical crime drama
In this masterpiece, Fritz Lang explores the psychology of human beings when faced with a wide variety of social dilemmas when a cruel crime is in motion. Each facet of society is thrown into a turmoil unable to stir freely or peacefully. Considering the movie was taken during the nazi regime is mind blowing.

The title "The murderers are among us" has a chilling feel constantly reminding you of the bad side of society.

The movie sets the premise for the plot pretty early without any pause. Its flow is aptly set and I was particularly impressed by the editing by Paul Falkenberg. The attention to detail regarding the investigation is precise and detailed and not left to the imagination. The absence of a background score was uncomfortable at times but added to the mystery and tone of the movie.

I enjoyed every bit of the movie and this is definitely a classic.

Per qualche dollaro in più
(1965)

An adventure for the ages
Loud orchestral music, wide shots of the landscape, intense stare-downs, quickdraws, witty comebacks, and Clint Eastwood, the perfect combination for a spaghetti western. Sergio Leone goes all out with masterful camera angles and impressive shots.

Clint Eastwood is magnanimous on the big screen with his rough personality only matched by the equally charming Lee Van Cleef and Gian Maria Volonte.

The ending and the direction the movie started veering towards in the second half were not what I expected but awesome nonetheless.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 3.0 Action & Adventure - 1.5 Story & Screenplay - 1.2 Costume/Art/Set/Decoration - 1.5 Cinematography - 0.8 Ending - 0.9 Total - 8.9.

Gatta Kusthi
(2022)

Weak attempt at promoting female liberation.
Despite a strong performance by Aishwarya Lekshmi this movie did not have much to offer. The movie is set in a world of male chauvinism and fake masculinity. The lead actress attempts to transcend societal barriers to prove her independence but the movie barely portrayed any of its key points properly.

Disappointed with the way Vishnu Vishal is also changing into a mindless mass actor. I've enjoyed his previous hits but was cringing at his scenes in this movie. Munishkanth did not get enough screen time but his performance and Karunas were true to their roles. The comedy was bearable and at times good. Logic wise this movie lacked a lot. Was hoping this could be a gateway for future movies to have more equal roles for the lead female characters but only memes can save this movie.

Witness for the Prosecution
(1957)

Witness this Marvel!
Agatha Christie's favorite on the big screen. An entertaining trial throughout. What looks like a simple case, takes a lot of twists and turns.

The subtle humor caught me by surprise, brilliantly scripted and exquisite characters. The script and dialogue are a delightful tickle to your intelligence.

The witty comebacks and bickering between Charles Laughton playing Sir Wilfrid and Elsa Lanchester playing Miss Plimsoll are my favorite part of the movie. The simply charismatic Tyrone and the wild Marlene are perfect.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 2.8 Story - 0.8 Screenplay - 0.9 Costume/Make-up - 0.8 Art/Set/Decoration - 0.6 Suspense - 0.6 Comedy - 0.7 Ending - 0.8 Total - 8.

Power of the spoken word
The movie had me gripping my seat the whole time. Mads is simply perfect playing this role. His eyes are so piercing, you can't look away. The movie is the very definition of the power of the spoken word. The way the story is set up and it's constant pace has an excellent way of making us glued to our screens. The child artists were all so convincing and incredible throughout the movie. Overall a must-watch flick. Annika who played Klara and Lasse who played Marcus were incredible.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 3.0 Story & Screenplay - 2 Art/Set/Locations - 1.2 Suspense - 1 Ending - 1 Total - 8.2.

Stalker
(1979)

A slow-paced masterpiece that meddles with your psychology
The protagonists are unique in their own way. A one of a kind sci fi experience within a zone to mess with your head. It has you questioning your desires, wishes and their impacts on society. Although I couldn't watch the movie in one go, it had me fixated for a long time.

The cinematography is crafted with painstaking detail. The long prolonged shots had me drifting into my own versions of what I expect the outcome to be. The dialogue was stimulating and the build up to the zone was interesting. I was left with a lot of open questions but overall didn't enjoy it as much as the reviews suggested.

Unforgettable memories
I picked this movie after I saw Bong Joon Ho's masterpiece "Parasite" and I wasn't disappointed. Like his other movies, it holds a lot of dark humor in places you least expect. Song Kang Ho is amazing as the overconfident detective. The movie has you guessing and doubting every detail and simultaneously making you think it's straightforward. Masterful storytelling and amazing visuals make this movie a wonderful experience.

Song Kang Ho - 0.9 Kim Sang Kyung - 0.8 Other cast - 1.0 Story - 0.9 Make up, Costume and set - 0.8 Screenplay - 0.9 Drama and humor - 0.8 Thrill and anticipation - 0.8 Ending - 1.0 Total - 7.9.

I, Tonya
(2017)

A rising star - Margot
Margot Robbie continues to prove she's an unstoppable force. Playing Tonya Harding definitely puts her on the A list if she isn't already up there. The movie makes you wince every once in a while with its gratuitous domestic violence but keeps you glued to your screen. Sebastian Stan is amazing and Allison Janney is spectacular as Tonya's mom. McKenna Grace absolutely nails her performance. Overall the movie is satirical but powerful.

Margot Robbie - 0.9 Sebastian Stan - 0.7 Allison Janney - 0.8 Mckenna Grace - 0.6 Other Cast - 1.5 Costume and Set design - 0.8 Story and screenplay - 0.8 Humor and drama - 0.7 Music - 0.7 Ending - 0.8 Total - 8.3.

War vs Tmgerines
A bittersweet reminder to the folly of war. Powerful performances by all the characters. Beautifully captured and hard to look away.

Sepearted by borders, language and culture but united by tangerines. The movie explores human nature and its tendency to rationalize war and conflict. A classic in every aspect.

The movie starts off introducing us to a couple characters and we might not even think twice about who they are. As the story progresses you are engrossed in each perspective and it gets you to think and wonder at the lengths people go to resolve conflicts without considering the simplest solution.

My rating: Cast - 4 Story - 2 Screenplay - 1 Costume & makeup - 1 Ending - 1 Total - 9.

Anantham: Chapter 1 - Maragatham
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 1

A bittersweet starting
Powerful performances by Prakash Raj and Sampath Raj start this wonderful series. The story beautifully brings out the feelings of a home behind a house. The first story kicks off with a couple and their experiences in this magnificent home.

Anantham: Chapter 2 - Seetha
(2022)
Episode 2, Season 1

Beautifully crafted storyline
A sad, melodramatic story with amazing writing and excellent performances. Amrutha Srinivasan is outstanding and remarkable. This story also taught me how the blind write which was very enlightening.

Never Say Never Again
(1983)

Age is just a number for 007
Sean Conrey's return as the invincible spy was a welcome sight. He is charming presence on screen with some good humor as an added bonus. The complexity of the plot and the advances in technology continue to feed the relevance of this genre.

Max Von Sydov as Blofeld was a vast improvement. Movie is action packed with explosive stunt sequences and impressive work by the stuntmen and as usual Bond gets invited to lunch and taken in a cruise before they try to kill him in new and ingenious ways that are bound to fail.

Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera both portrayed their characters beautifully as the damsel in distress who has been wronged and the crazy willed antagonist respectfully.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 2.5 Action & Stunts - 0.6 Story & Screenplay - 0.4 Special effects - 0.4 Costume - 0.4 Art/Set/Decoration - 0.4 Comedy - 0.4 Romance - 0.4 Ending - 0.3 Total - 6.2.

Octopussy
(1983)

Charming but a little vulgur
I liked the use of colors in this movie.

The opening credits song was a little more direct on the innuendoes than the previous versions making it a lot more vulgar just like the movie title.

This movie was also riddled with a lot more crude jokes which were more distasteful than charming. Roger Moore continues to be charming as the protagonist with a flair for womanizing. The humor was good. As far as representation goes, I was personally happy for the attention garnered for Indian audiences but as usual they are either sidekicks that are not relevant to the plot or a bad guy based on predominantly racist stereotypes.

The movie has a lot of ridiculous scenes and found it a little out of style with the rest of the elements in the movie. Felt a little downhill for the James Bond franchise.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 2.0 Action & Adventure - 0.8 Story & Screenplay - 0.4 Special effects - 0.4 Costume - 0.3 Art/Set/Decoration - 0.3 Comedy - 0.3 Romance - 0.4 Ending - 0.3 Total - 5.2.

Metropolis
(1927)

Mediator between head and hands must be the heart
A movie with a plot way ahead of its time and still relevant to the current work culture. The brilliantly crafted set pieces bring about a sense of wonder and amazement at the innovation of the 20s. The special effects were brilliantly crafted.

The movie focuses on the class divide and the sufferings of daily workers in contrast to the lavish lifestyles of those living above the clouds in their towers.

The last act gets very exciting and continues to grow in scale. The grand scale of the story and movie makes it a wonderful experience. It is pretty loud for a silent movie and more explosive that anything of its time.

If Beale Street Could Talk
(2018)

Absolutely beautiful
From the start of the movie, the lighting, the feeling of belonging and emotions were powerful and absolutely beautiful. A story about questioning the price of freedom in America. This captivating narrative is grounded in reality and truly captures all emotions. This movie left me wondering and thinking about a lot of things.

The cast were absolutely brilliant. Performances that stayed with me for a long time. This is a story about enduring love and family.

How I decided my rating: Cast - 3 Story - 0.9 Direction - 0.8 Screenplay - 1 Cinematography - 1 Art/Set Decoration - 0.8 Costume/Wardrobe - 0.7 Total - 8.2.

Pride & Prejudice
(2005)

A perfect classic.
The amazing cast brought to life this timeless classic. Keira Knightley was especially amazing in her portrayal as Lizzie Bennett. I loved the movement of the camera and the various scenes captured beautifully.

My favourite other than Keira was Donald Sutherland and his comforting presence throughout the movie. The story seemed to be fast paced at times but surely did justice to most of it. Obviously loved the story by Jane Austen and it's adaptation for the screen was as marvelous as I expected it to be.

How I decided my rating: Actors - 2.5 Story - 1 Screenplay - 1 Direction - 1 Cinematography - 1 Art/Set/Make-Up - 1.5 Costume - 1 Total - 9.

For Your Eyes Only
(1981)

Hasn't aged well
Roger Moore comes back for another time and continues to be charming as before. I wasn't a big fan of the background music in this movie. The stunts and action sequences were a fun to watch and exhilarating at times.

The technological advances were not up to my expectation but still exciting to imagine the various advancements in spy craft but the daredevil stunts sure felt like an improvement.

The inclusion of a female partner felt a little more natural in this movie and not just for the sake of eye candy. Powerfully and beautifully portrayed by Carole Bouquet.

The story seemed a little erratic at times and plot gaps were not natuarlly addressed, yet it remained to be a fun filled ride till the end.

Overall a partial improvement with room to be more.

How I decided my rating:

Cast - 1.5 Action & Stunts - 1 Story & Screenplay - 0.4 Direction - 0.4 Music - 0.2 Comedy - 0.4 Drama & Romance - 0.3 Cinematography - 0.4 Visual Effects - 0.2 Ending - 0.3 Total - 5.1.

Moonraker
(1979)

A lot to take in
Another fun filled installment in the Bond franchise. This time it's out of this world. The story wasn't up to the same level as the previous movies but the movies continue to come up ingenious new technological advances.

Though the charm continues to live on and a little less misogynistic than previously, the movie wasn't very interesting.

The Batman
(2022)

Vengeance is good business
Truly enjoyed every moment of it and can't wait to watch it again for all the Easter eggs and scenes that I may have missed. This was more of a detective movie than a comic book hero movie.

A vigilante still in his early years with lots of room to grow as a protector and guardian of a criminally corrupt city which is so badly infested that you don't even smell the gutters anymore.

The movie has this raw and unnerving feeling that lets you know that it's not going to be sunshine and daisies. From the opening shots of a dark alley under the giant sign in the clouds, you know you're in for a ride you'll never want to get off.

The Spy Who Loved Me
(1977)

Love at first spy
We get to see better stunts and action sequences aling with new exotic locations and great set pieces. There was a significant improvement in the overall background music and artistic presentations in this installment of the franchise.

Roger Moore continues to play a charming James Bond. The franchise does employ a few strong female roles but continues to reduce most other women to eye catchy semi clad damsels.

An assortment of bad guys with deformities that are suit a p practically.

My rating Roger Moore - 0.7 Other cast - 1.3 Story - 0.8 Romance - 0.4 Technology - 0.8 Music - 0.7 Screenplay - 0.7 Action and stunts - 0.8 Ending - 0.5 Total - 6.7.

The Man with the Golden Gun
(1974)

Bond vs Dracula
Another interesting plot, the franchise continues to employ efficient writers to keep things fresh. As always the technological advancements in the movie are ingenious.

I love the minority representation in this franchise and the opportunities it offers but continuing to cast them as deviants becomes tiresome.

The women continue to be scantily clad and misused but add to the charm of a spy who is a womanizer and will use anyone for queen and country.

The main highlight of most Bond movies are the bad guys and Christopher Lee is by far my favorite in the series. He's captivating and a force to reckon with.

Live and Let Die
(1973)

Sign of the times
Bad guys continue to come up with ingenious ways to kill Bond instead of the easiest way to just do it.

A lot of racist stereotypes included in the movie but with a lot more minority representation than expected in a mainstream predominantly white movie. Freakishly awkward at times.

The action excels as always and the Roger Moore does a good job filling in these shoes. An exciting plot with expensive set pieces and locations. There bond franchise continues to be strong and interesting.

Rating break up: Characters - 1.5 Plot - 0.8 Screenplay - 0.8 Technology - 0.5 Humor - 0.5 Action - 0.8 Drama - 0.2 Ending - 0.4 Total - 5.5.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions
(2021)

Engaging but unsatisfying
The movie was fast paced and continued to surprise with a few ingenious moments. The characters were not interesting enough nor was the overall plot an illuminating experience. The dull comparison to the previous installment in the franchise but worth a watch if you have time to kill.

Rating: Characters - 1.5 Screenplay - 0.9 Story - 0.5 Thrill - 0.8 Ending - 0.3 Total - 4.

Hridayam
(2022)

A little too much
This movie tries its best to milk the nostalgia trend. It tries to cover a lot in a long movie which felt too stretched out. Good performances by the lead characters but not enough by side characters. Movie repeats a lot of cliche scenes and builds on the success of past nostalgia based movies.

Overall wasn't too excited after spending 3 hours of my weekend on this movie.
