True Lies
(2023)

Wasn't what I hoped it would be
Ok, if you could fet past the highly unlikely scenario that a soccer mom, who does yoga & kick-boxing as hobbies and who cooks dinner every night for her kids, could suddenly be accepted into her husband's totally covers, black-ops spy job so that they xan fly around the world catching/killing bad guys - this show is for you.

I like the husband (Steve. Howey) and wife (Ginger Gonzaga). They are a little funny. They work well together but Howey is more "Reba" in this show than Law & Order SVU. That was a strong character that could be believed as a spy.

The supporting character's in this show....aren't. And I just can't find a reason to keep watching.

Black Gold
(2008)

Black Gold - Bring it back.
This show wasn't going to win any awards, but it was a wonderful 30 minute, mindless, excursion into the oil industry & roughnecks.

Of course, all those handsome hard bodies didn't hurt anything. I really liked Oscar, Peewee, Josh, Cheston. And loved Brandon Watson. All those guys have moved on, but the series can be brought back with any Derrick crew.

The show is the "Deadliest Catch" on land and the Texas badlands make for good TV. The temperature, the danger, stretching the mechanical capabilities of the rig & machinery...but keeping the personal lives included in the work lives made for good TV.

Will Trent
(2023)

Politically Correct
I tried to like Will Trent, I did, but he's not just quirky like "Monk" but genuinely damaged. I like the character of Faith but we-ve not seen all she has to offer yet.

The character of the cheif is a caricature of what some writer assumes a black, female chief needs to be like and it's disappointing that, in that caricature, the character comes off like a buffoon.

And the characters played by Erika Christensen and Jake McLaughlin...what are the writers doing?!?! The secondary characters makes this disjointed, like the writers are writing 2 plots each week and they never meet, buy are just thrown in after the main story is resolved. It doesn't do justice to these actors at all.

All in all it's disappointing.

Law & Order: Organized Crime
(2021)

Misses the mark
I'm a long time Law & Order fan. It's crime procedural that doesn't have to try too hard to draw you in for an hour.

I really wanted Chris Meloni's return to be remarkable. His character is familiar to the L&O franchise and he doesn't change in the new spin-off Organized Crime.

And let me say, I love the new. Sgt in Danielle Moné Truitt. She's plays a smart, ambitious, tough cop that pursues justice just as Stabler does with less brute strength & more by the book....which makes it more believable.

The Wheatly story went on an episode too long but kept my attention. ( Dylan McDermott was perfectly evil, but WOW, Tamara Taylor was magnificent. The ending was great). Yet at some point, the audience remembers just how old we are getting & that this kind of "real life scenario is a younger person's world".

This is my problem with many of the procedurala these days. In an attempt to be "all inclusive" the writers want us to believe a 98 lb police officer can physically bring down a 280 lb man. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. While I loved watching Officer Jett falling for gangster. Sheamus (Michael Malarkey- a beautiful man) I just didn't buy into this episode...though I would have loved to see him live, to see if they could have woven these two together.

Anyway, it's watchable but dang, they are playing Elliot like he is still a young man...and I can't buy it.

Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.
(2012)

Love this walk through history
Dr. Gates takes the guest through history. He weaves the stories of forefathers with an eloquence that leaves the audience spellbound. The research is amazing but when Dr. Gates introduces the past to the present, it is truly magical. The profiles are beautiful and at times agonizing, but the past woven so articulately to the history of family is wonderful. It absolutely should be shown in history classes as it draws you into the eras of yesterday while letting the guests learn about occurences and activities that lead to who they are today. Brilliant work.

I didn't realize this is a show from. 2012. I found it on late night PBS. I love this slice of history. Dr. Gates is masterful.

Archetypes
(2022)

A Self Serving Debacle
While I really would have liked to hear more from the quests, Markle has an annoying habit of interjecting herself into the conversation. It is less interview or even chatting "with a friend" over a defined topic and more a dissertation on how Markle perceives herself. It's forced, uninteresting and exemplifies why people have said in other reviews, that's its more about Markle, less about quests. Mariah Carey at least got a few words in. I won't tune in again. I have no interest in a podcast with celebrities that don't get to speak while Markle spends so much time on her favorite topic....herself.
