The House of Mirth
(2000)

A surprisingly good film
I feel sorry for this movie. It rather reminds me of the Shawshank Redemption in that it did not do so well at the cinema.

And yet, it is a very good film. The script is well written and the performances are very very good indeed. Sometimes you don't need those very big and expensive actors like Brad Pitt to make a film work.

This film attempts to stand high on how good the story is and how well written and acted it is, something which can be a lost art when big budgets, special effects and big actors come into play, where they hope those alone will make a movie big.

People are not that stupid.

This movie has elegance. I even had a lump in my throat for goodness sake towards the end. It simply should not happen to a grown man.

Prometheus
(2012)

This was a good movie
I was a little stunned at some of the other reviews to be honest.

The film is not that bad at all, not as bad as some are making it out to be. I am not a religious follower of the Alien films, in fact, never much liked them to be honest.

However, I thought this film was good. The story was just right, too many films these days rely on high action scenes which seem to almost dominate movies. I thought there was a good focus on the story itself. Not to mention, the CGI was pretty amazing.

I would certainly like to see a second movie on from this.

And just to add, also amazed at how serious and literal some people are. It is a FILM for goodness sake. Are we really saying all films need to be accurate or plausible? Seriously? I couldn't give two hoots about how in reality something could never happen etc, or whether someone stumbled around half cut open for too long. I don't care now and didn't care in other films like DOOM.

This was actually a really good movie and I recommend it.

Political Animals
(2012)

This could be my new 'Kings' and 'West wing'
Completely taken by surprise with this show. I honestly loved it.

Well written, good strong characters and lots of things going on, so no chance of it becoming a bore.

The series is definitely helped by the fact they have Sigourney Weaver playing the lead character. A perfect choice if I say so myself. I reckon if they had anybody else it may not have actually worked, so excellent casting.

I love the gritty aspect to the series if I am honest. The behind the doors language gives a far more sense of reality to the real world.

Loving the plots which shall remain a mystery to those who are thinking on whether to watch the show or not, but I would say, definitely watch it.

I hope the series does not get cancelled, I am left stunned by the US cable channels pulling the plug on many series and yet, the trash remains. Very puzzling.

Great casting, great show. If you liked West Wing you should like this.

Stargate: Atlantis
(2004)

A really good follow on series.
Not easy to do these types of series, especially when Stargate was such a big hit.

This was really good, good characters, good storyline. 1 or 2 episodes near the end were shoddy, that Sheperd Episode in Vegas was completely ridiculous and dull. Bordered on what Frakes did to the last episode of Enterprise.

Shame it ended to be honest. I mean they created Universe which frankly is dull. Picking up a lot now, but may be too late, but they might have been better served continuing Atlantis and having that cast on the ship.

Overall, a good series and a very good dedication as an off shoot from the original.

Stargate Universe
(2009)

Hmm, not sure what to really think
It started out very interesting, but after 1 series, it was just long winded, failed to go anywhere and was becoming a drag.

They should have avoided the stones thing, so many people I have heard, who were not original stargate fans, who got confused by all that and put off.

They should ave considered, if breaking away from the original, then perhaps the best way to get new fans would be to not perhaps use things from the other shows? Some okay casting. Still not sure about it all. Bad character development.

CGI as always is very good, gutted there is now a lot to do with Aliens at all. It does pick up, but frankly, it takes way too long and not everybody stuck with it to find out.

And then God was mentioned. Well, now it has gone off the rails. I certainly wouldn't buy it on DVD and ruin my other collections, but will continue to watch just to see, and frankly, not other much sci fi is being made to an okay standard. Best of a bad lot as they say.

Babylon 5
(1993)

Love this series
Love it, and won't hear a bad thing said about it.

Completely took me by surprise years ago, just love the whole thing, characters, story lines, the way there were some really good big story lines running through and some really good 1 episode story lines.

Good CGI, good characters. It is up there with my star treks. Very original and I go back and watch it all really often. It just kept getting better and better. Not sure about some off shoot shows and films, but those are another review.

If you want to watch a good sci fi series, and like Star Treks and Earth Final conflict etc, you will love this to bits.

I Am Number Four
(2011)

A pretty good film.
This was actually a pretty good film. Look, it didn't have bad CGI. If you want god awful CGI look at those copycat movies made by the Sci fi or Sy fy channel (again, only in America). The one which cracks me up are the ones like Transmorfers. You couldn't get any worse than those type.

No, this was a good film with a good story. Opening was a little slow, but it really picked up.

As for the Aliens, which some mention, the trouble with the aliens, is not the makeup was poor, those artists did a good job, it was just the bad guys were not bad enough. Clearly made for Teens, but I enjoyed it. And teens would have perhaps liked a real ugly looking bad guy with a bit more gore.

A pretty good sci fi film. There is a severe lack of good ones coming out these days, someone let the nuts lose to wreck some good stories.

If you want to put a film on for some quick action, fun moments, then this is it. not too long a film either.

Thor
(2011)

Bloody loved it
I checked the spoiler box, just in case.

Anyway, this film was great, and you know when a film is good, when it feels as though the film was not on for that long.

Redly good acting, good links being made between other marvel movies. Special effects were right up my street. Good comedy mix in with this one too.

Someone make a new He Man movie. Sorry, just had to get it off my chest. This is what that reminded me of a bit.

I have liked the marvel set of movies which have been coming out.

Good fantasy film with good humour. I am giving it a 9 as I am feeling good about it all. A 10 would have to blow my mind completely.

Babylon 5: The Lost Tales
(2007)

Not a good thing for the B5 days.
Not very good. Firstly it is only around 69 minutes long, not a good thing for what is basically two episodes. The story lines had no real bearing on the series. It seemed as though the first about heaven and hell was just plucked from thin air. The second although related to the actual series storyline was far too short in length and lacking in substance. A very disappointing movie if you can really call it that.

Special effect were not great either, i was informed that it had an overhaul for this movie but it seemed a little worse than the series effects. I liked the changes to the interior though. It made it more credible.

And the new technology on the ship leaves you a little baffled especially if you are a fan of the show and have seen third space.

Overall i think it would have been better if they had concentrated on the actual B5 series, they could do it later in time with the Centauri issue or even more daring and have gone for something to follow on from the Rangers movie.

I cannot see another being made after this one.
