The Man in the High Castle
(2015)

I don't get all the hate
I thought the whole series was a bit slow, and that's not a bad thing. Slow in the sense it was focused on acting, on dialogue, on political and cultural intrigue. I stopped watching in the middle of Season 3 because I started other series that are more to my taste.

But I came back to finish because I love history, period pieces and I'm really curious about this idea of "what if the Nazis won?". Also, the quality is au rendez-vous.

Now, the funny thing is that I only realized there was sci-fi in this during season 3. I had to come on IMDb to make sure. Then I learned it was based on short book by Phillip C. Dick. Had no idea.

Contrary to most reviews here, I got more interested in the last two seasons. I didn't mind the end at all. I wasn't expecting something predictable and it wasn't. I don't mind cryptic or opened ended story.

John Smith has been given this name to say that anyone could become him (most common first and last name). Him and his family are my favorite intrigues. I didn't relate much to some of the other main characters like Juliana. That's one of the reason I'm no giving more than 7/10. It didn't blow me away but I'll remember a great deal of it and will talk about it to whoever will listen.

Midnight Run
(1988)

Hard to dislike but just ok. I'd say it's Good but not Very Good
It's a classic 80s action flick with car chases, cops and criminals. It's not very believable from start to finish: the FBI agents, the cops and everything that happens are not realistic at all. It requires the suspension of disbelief.

What is most interesting is the acting and relationship between the two main actors. It's fun, very comedic. You have to be in the mood for this kind of light 80s action movie.

The Giant Mechanical Man
(2012)

Good light Romcom
I wanted something fluffy, with mentions of some existential dread and people who feel misunderstood. But nothing deep, on the light side of things. I got it with this movie. Caricatures of characters, but with heart, conventional romcom but well executed. Makes you feel like you're not alone to be lost in this world without a big morale lesson. Nothing revolutionary here.

For me a 7/10 is Very Good. The 6.7 IMDb currently post of public rating is accurate, between Good and Very Good.

Movies are like songs, there's a movie for each mood. You have to pick the right one for the right mood.

Father Christmas Is Back
(2021)

Over the top comedy.
I watched it because Frasier is my favorite sitcom.

I knew what to expect from Kelsey Grammar who pretty much always plays the same character (he just did Like Father with Kirsten Bell and his character is a copy and paste. But that one had a bit more heart and successful sentimentality.)

I actually had a lot of fun watching this movie even though it ran out of gas in the midway, I lost interest but kept watching for one or two more laughs.

The characters are extremely caricaturals and very well defined with stereotypes, but it works with the ensemble. It's also quite predictable but there's a few original flash.

I give it a 7/10 which is Good for me.

I give it a 6/10 which for me means Good (between Average and Very Good).

Irresistible
(2020)

5/10 for average
I really wanted to like this one because I'm a big fan of Jon Stewart (writer and director). I also really like Steve Carrel. I was so disappointed for Jon. Comedy is hard and I was trying to imagine how certain cringy scenes were decided and my guess is that when you're in a creation bubble you can sometimes be disconnected from the end result. It happened too often in this one unfortunately.

I liked a few jokes and the scenario I guess. It does show the reality of political campaigns in the US and the very serious problems therein. Too bad it's so average. It's a very important issue. But very disappointing overall.

Finch
(2021)

Average to Good
5/10 is Average for me, between Good (6/10) and Bad (4/10). I hesitate between 5 and 6, probably a 5.5.

I love dystopian and post-apocalyptic movies. I appreciated that aspect of Finch. Also, the robot is very well made, his locomotion is agréable and it's interesting to watch his progression and behaviors. Tom Hanks does everything right, as always. It's also a family friendly movie I would say.

But the scenario is boring and nothing exciting happens. It would have been fine if something else of substance would have replaced the uneventfulness. There's only sentimentality to grip to and after a while, it's not enough to keep my interest. I think making it so family friendly did not help. It's one of those movies that I already forgot about; it's very forgettable and bland.

Minuscule: La vallée des fourmis perdues
(2013)

Not a single word spoken.
It kind of bugged me that the laws of physics and biology did not apply to this story, but I would have been a carnage. I'm guessing it's never been the case for this 3 minutes French comic metamorphosesd into a full length feature. It's nevertheless quite a success. Each character is so unique and charming that you and your whole family will be entertained. The insects and animals are anime but everything else is real images of forests forests, rocks, rivers and such. It sure is beautiful. It might loose some steams for some in the middle which is why I'm not giving more than 8.

Mission to Mars
(2000)

Has some nice graphics, CGI and ideas but the rest is bad.
I'm a sci-fi fan. I can be forgiving. But this film was asking for too much forgiveness. From the get go, scripts, conversations and editing are a problem. It's so awkward that it's hard to imagine a director looking at the final result and being ok with it. The actors playing the astronauts are not convincing. I'm sure they have some fun in space but not to this level. Laughable. The emotional mood that they're trying to sell us falls flat because of the poor script and editing. Bad decisions from top notch scientists does not help.

I don't mind the fact that it's way more fiction than science. There's good ideas, good cinematography. The music is very distracting at times.

It's hard to appreciate a movie with that much ambition when you're laughing at odd line delivery and conversations from the very beginning to the very end.

Captain Fantastic
(2016)

It's a powerful, a deep movie, with a few marshmallows.
A very aesthetically pleasing critique of consumerism and capitalism, and of its opposite utopia. It very easily brings up some of the historically most important pieces of philosophy and intellectual enquiring. On top of not being empty, it's an original story that I've never personally encountered before, and it was a delight to watch it unfold. The roasted marshmallows just made it hard to emotionally connect during some dramatic moments, but not all. Every single actor is shining, but most of all Viggo Mortensen is brilliant.

If you hate progressists or granola, you're gonna be in the minority who don't like this one.

High Life
(2018)

Cerebral, dark, intense slow burn based on what we know.
I loved it. You have to be in the right set of mind to appreciate such a cerebral and dark movie of course.

I loved the slow ride in space, discovering the story with well calculated jumps in the past and in the future.

Sometimes the point is that there is no point.

It's based on things we know, so the director said that she does not think it's a sci-fi movie. Even the black hole looks like they do in reality.

It's not a happy movie. It's full of intense sexual tension and strange behaviors.

Storm Over Europe
(2016)

Perfect to really learn or consolidate that specific era
So the special effects for battles are not great. And that's the only bad thing about this documentary.

It really helped me to put things in perspective, and finally being able to understand how Rome "fell" and how the Middle-Age started.

It's a transitionnal period which had always been blurry and mysterious to me. Not anymore.

The most impressive aspects are the actual archeological discoveries being shown.

Now I can explain to someone else the big lines of what happened and the difference between Vandals and other tribes. I can explain that they all wanted to be part of the Roman Empire and admired them, that they integrated themselves peacefully.

Alien Worlds
(2020)

A fantastic documentary on evolutionary biology and its mechanisms
I think the title attracted a lot of people interested in ancien aliens hypothesis and people who actually believe aliens have visited us and/or created us. In other words: people who are not passionate about science and who do not understand the scientific method, the theory of evolution and what is a theory in science. Those people are then reason why the rating is so low.

Too many people are complaining that the focus is too much on Earth and not enough on alien worlds. I even read a comment complaining that they didn't want to learn about the sexual selection of rhinoceros beetles. It you want to imagine alien ecosystems you have to understand our own.

This documentary is an excellent exercise of explaining different aspects or mechanisms of evolution on earth, and applying it on exoplanets which are very different from Earth.

It's very well done and informative, I loved every minute of it. It's perfect for people who are passionate about evolutionary biology or science in general.

Good Time
(2017)

Disappointed
I had high hope but I was also skeptic as I really disliked Uncut Gems from the same director. I was right to be skeptic as this movie left me on my appetite.

I can't bash the acting, or the cinematography because they are good. But the scenario is dull and leads nowhere. Sure it gets you interested from the start in knowing what will happen but the thriller aspect faded away around mid-movie. Overall it's more of a familial drama between two brothers than a thriller, which explains the disappointment of many. There's also a lot of focus on Pattinson's character but no arc story or development for him.

It's always tough to admit not liking a movie with good ratings, but I didn't enjoy the ride and the whole thing felt flat. It's way better than Uncut Gems though, which I hated.

The Equalizer 2
(2018)

Unrealistic and plot hole
No matter how good Denzel is, he cannot save this movie, he can only make it watchable. It was vaguely entertaining.

The whole movie starts with the murder of a Belgian dude disguised as a suicide. We will never know who he is and why this is done to him. It's the excuse to involve Denzel's friend and himself.

Denzel's character commit so many crimes where he would be seen on camera that his whole story is not believable. He's too out of shape to do all the martial art depicted.

One exemple of unrealistic move is when the kid comes out of his hiding place less than a second after 3 killers left the apartment. Anyone who is sane would have been so terrified that they would have waited more than a second before coming out.

Drive
(2011)

Can't recommend it enough, it will age well
Awesome movie with a good story that keeps you interested from start to finish. Fantastic visual aesthetic. It has a twisted ambiance and it is action packed and tense. It's greatly appreciated from the public and the critics alike. The clash between the 80s music and the modern LA nightlife, symbolized by the pink title, helps to make this movie excellent. It will serve as a reference for future film noir directors.

Gosling playing the mysterious bad boy working extreme jobs and having a cute girl infatuated with him is once more effective (The Place Beyond the Pines).

The Adderall Diaries
(2015)

Doesn't feel achieved
Some scenes are brilliants by themselves and the performance of Ed Harris, James Franco, Amber Heard and Christian Slater are nice to watch. But the crime aspect/court scenes are not linked efficiently to the rest of the movie. It lacks something in the scenario or in the montage, and we can understand why Stephen Elliot (the original book author) was not satisfied with the results.

It's not a great movie but it's interesting to see a reflection on memory, perception mixed in with Klonopin, Adderall and Vicodin. It showcase a real aspect of the human experience, it's that we modify our memories with time.

John Wick
(2014)

Guns guns guns
It's the story of Theon Greyjoy who kills the puppy dog of a professional assassin(irony?). This assassin has no purpose in life other than to shoot other assassins. They all hang out in the same club and buildings, which is very practical in this kind of situation of course.

As the French would say, not bad for an action flick. But I'm definitely over gun fights and gun choreography in movies so I didn't enjoy this one as much as some people. There's really not much in terms of story arc and character development.

The Book of Eli
(2010)

A pretty container without content
The story of a man in a post-apocalyptic world who risk his life to save the last bible in order to start another 2,000 years of warfare, discrimination, ignorance and division.

I liked the Fallout style atmosphere. Because if there is one thing this movie has it's style. The nuclear post-apocalyptic ambiance is brilliantly achieved with its own fashion. The yellowish filter works but ultimately gets frustrating for some reason. None of the acting impressed me, in fact I had the feeling that I had seen those same actors playing the same characters in other movies. It's a collage of past performances.

Whether you believe or not might influence your feelings about this movie. But if you put aside this specific aspect of the story you're objectively left with a pretty container but no content. There could have been much more developments with the story and more explanations about the background of the neo society (or absence of). Special mention to the hands verification that they perform to know if they can trust someone. It takes some time to figure out why they do it but it's subtle and gives an uneasy feeling. A search on the Web confirms the science behind it.

Having said that, it's a movie that entertained me well enough to remember it for years to come (no small feat for me as I usually forget about movies which didn't have an emotional impact).

Birkebeinerne
(2016)

Longest ski chase in the history of cinema
Anyone who likes medieval action movie or historical re-enactment will enjoy this film. It's not a memorable film unfortunately. Sure there's dynamic double axe battles, Nordic landscapes to admire and history but it lacks that special touch masterpieces have.

Two men carry and protect the baby son of the dead king of Norwegia across the mountains from Lilhammer. They are Norwegian Ski Infantry (Birkebeiner). The Church wants this baby dead in order to take control of the other half of the country. Inspired by true events, these heroic stories changed Norwegian history forever.

Modern Birkebeiner racers also re-enact the famous ski tour, this time around going in the opposite direction. They are all required to bear a backpack weighing at least 3.5 kilos, meant to represent the pack containing the royal infant.

Bloodline
(2015)

Family shenanigans and nautical activities
The story of a family ravaged by rampant alcoholism and a careless attitude towards boating safety measures in the Keys.

It's captivating to watch them guzzling booze like there's no tomorrow while sharing dark anecdotes and bad memories until awkwardness ensues.

There's quite a few skeletons in this family, so many in fact that painkillers addiction and cocaine abuse look pale in comparison.

The characters, their relationships and the Keys are realistic as hell and make for a great series in all seriousness. I get hot and want to lay on a beach in Florida while I watch Bloodline. It also makes me want to start a fight with my own family, it looks like the thing to do: get drunk, fight with siblings and do regrettable things.

War of the Worlds
(2005)

Worst dad ever
Worst dad ever, Tom Cruise is really mean with his kids in general; he even scorns his daughter for having bought humus with the lunch money he gave her.

Memorable moments : Tom Cruise covered in pulverized human powder ; the little girl screams "terrorists!" when she first gets attacked by aliens ; the flaming train.

The montage is weak and the scenes didn't flow properly. It could have been a memorable sci-fi movie but sadly it never rises. Action wise there's a few good flash but nothing more. It's not Spielberg's best work.

Breaking Bad
(2008)

A totally addictive TV Series with exceptional acting
I just finished watching all 4 seasons in just under 3 days. I was totally addicted at first, somewhat lost my enthusiasm during the 3rd season, and regained it with the fabulous 4th season.

The writing is of the highest quality and the acting is exceptional. Bryan Cranston(Walter) and Anna Gunn(Skyler) are amazing. A special mention to Giancarlo Esposito(Gus) for one of the creepiest TV character ever.

It's nice that there is a main storyline linking all the seasons together. The main quest remains the same, and all the subplots revolve around it. Something Tim Kring was not able to do with Heroes for example.

The only critics I have (and it is the only one really, otherwise I would rate it 10/10) is that I found some of Walter's decisions rather foolish and hard to justify. Also, in a few episodes, montage was weak and didn't contribute to a satisfying pace.

I am now hooked on this series and can't wait to get my next fix in 2012 with season 5.
