Deep Throat
(1972)

Hilarious! Best porn movie ever!
Linda Lovelace finds she's unable to be satisfied sexually. A visit to a doctor discovers that her clitoris is in the back of her throat.

Miss Lovelace tests her condition on the doctor and several others. This cues her only wardrobe change -- into a nurse's uniform -- and she proceeds to treat male patients with odd sexual maladies with the skill of a professional and the zeal of a hobbyist.

True, it's dated, and we're so used to seeing plastic bodies with no flaws (and no adherence to gravity), and these bodies are natural, flawed and hairy.

It's not erotic at all, but where on earth do you get lines like "What's a nice joint doing in a girl like you?" and "Do you mind if I smoke while you eat?"

Rent it, buy it and invite your friends over and see it!

Restoration
(1995)

To this film's detractors:
I'm not sure we saw the same movie and I'm puzzled.

This is a tremendously rich, emotional film, very true to Rose Tremain's novel, and just wonderful.

The casting is divine, and I thought Meg Ryan was fine as Catherine.

Charles II is my favorite English monarch and Sam Neill portrayed him just as I pictured him.

Robert Downey was Marivel to a T, as was David Thewliss as Pierce.

The costumes and scenery were magnificent -- from the palace to the countryside and back -- and those fabulous Spaniels running through the palace and environs was just how I'd pictured England's most enlightened monarch's place to be!

How anyone can find this movie to be anything less than a gem is beyond me.

A Slipping-Down Life
(1999)

Tear-Jerking, Tender Surprise
I really enjoyed this little-known, low key movie.

The story is very simple, with little drama or fanfare, it unwinds slowly, and will touch anyone who thought they were invisible or an outcast despairing of ever being loved.

Evie Decker is a lonely young woman living with her loving, aloof widower father and Drum Casey is a lonely young man from an abusive, hateful father and apologetic mother, both decidedly lower class and an embarrassment to him.

Evie becomes obsessed with Drum, carves his last name into her forehead, and her ardor seduces him - both seek love and find it with each other, although they're an unlikely pair.

I really liked it, and Guy Pearce as Drum is beautiful with a seductive, smoky voice and you can see why Evie would fall in love with him.

The ending is left to the viewer's imagination. When Evie gives Drum an ultimatum, does he return to her? It's unclear, and purposely so. When they ride off together, is he really in the car, or is he just "with" her in spirit? He mentions on the radio that the band is heading to Nashville, and she's sold the house and packed everything into the car.

Either way, is it a happy ending? It's satisfying either way.

Shallow Hal
(2001)

Surprisingly Sweet
I refused to see "Shallow Hal" purely on the basis that it looked like yet another "make fun of the fat chick" joke. It was offered as an in-flight movie and, seeing how it was free and I was trapped anyway I decided to watch it and and was surprised at how much I liked it. The low humor it does stoop to is brief and very funny and overall it has a message that beauty really is in the eye...well, you know.

Stuart Saves His Family
(1995)

Took me by complete surprise...
I was channel-surfing one afternoon and "Stuart Saves His Family" was on HBO. Being a bit of a masochist, I thought I'd stay and see how embarrassingly bad it was going to be (as most SNL-character-inspired movies are) and was pleasantly surprised. Anyone who is or knows someone who is in any of the 12-step programs will appreciate this movie and show it to all your friends. It has a stellar cast and Al Franken is an underrated genius.
