Race to Glory - Audi vs Lancia
(2024)

A piece of motorsport history
I honestly can't understand the poor ratings of this film, perhaps those who didn't live through those years weren't able to fully grasp its spirit. The year 1983 marks a historic moment for motor racing and automotive engineering in general, being the last year that a two-wheel drive car competed in a rally race. The film describes very well the situation of the Lancia team and the dominance of the new 4X4 technology that Audi introduces into competitions. The plot is slightly fictionalized but the story as a whole tells of events that really happened in the championship 83' Rally fans can't help but see it!

Oppenheimer
(2023)

The usual Nolan strikes again!
The film is another masterpiece from the world-class director. Although not entirely his own work as it is based on a novel, Hoppenheimer has the unmistakable quality of a British director who not only masterfully describes the story of the father of the atomic bomb but has the unmistakable touch of the artist. The protagonist's internal conflict is palpable, his ambition and at the same time his morality collide, giving the image of a tormented genius who will change the history of humanity forever with the invention of the most powerful war device ever conceived . A film that is already part of the Olympus and that awaits Oscar night as an absolute protagonist! A masterpiece!

The Batman
(2022)

Batman noir...
I'll be honest, my first impression after seeing The Batman for the first time was that of a film that was too dark and "slow" to get me excited about, but secondly I was able to better appreciate the psychological and introspective aspect of the film and better appreciate its characteristics. Of course, after Nolan's masterpiece you couldn't have thought that any Batman would bring those emotions back to life but all in all the film is pleasant, less action but more introspective. The choice of cast, although not at the stratospheric levels of its predecessor, still brightens the scene and is appreciated for its commitment and particularity. Overall a positive rating which does not hide some limitations but recognizes an appreciable attempt to give a different slant to the character and the settings.

K-19: The Widowmaker
(2002)

An impressive film.
The K19 affair is one of the many sad stories that the Cold War is full of. The film focuses on the classic story attributable to the communist regime in all its facets, from honor to the approximation of those who did not want to come second. The management of what was supposed to be just an exercise is appalling and the consequences of such obtuse insistence are disastrous. Seeing these men sneak close to a failing nuclear reactor in an attempt to repair it literally makes you shudder. A film that opens our eyes to the inadequacy of the Soviet chain of command and gives a good idea of how the Cold War pushed the performance anxiety of both superpowers to the extreme. A must see for lovers of films of this genre and otherwise. Rating 8.

Full Metal Jacket
(1987)

The Marine Corps at the time of Vietnam.
The film Full Metal Jaket directed by Kubrick is a manifesto to the military stereotype that dominated in the USA. Of the 60s/70s. Boys taken from every remote corner of America and transformed into "war machines" through a journey of hazing and deprivation. The dark side that emerges from the film is immediately clear to the spectators, the potential consequences of military training on the psyche of the weakest subjects is well highlighted. Everything then flows into a cynical vision of war that leaves no room for sentimentality except towards one's battle companion. The phrases of the legendary Sergeant Hartman have remained in the history of modern cinema, a characterization that Kubrick was able to give masterfully. Overall, it cannot be denied that it is one of the best films ever on the military theme and the war in Vietnam.

Thirteen Days
(2000)

The Cuban crisis for everyone.
This film describes in a very pleasant and engaging way the events that occurred in 1962 relating to the "missile crisis" in Cuba. The Soviet Union, in agreement with General Caastro, began to install medium-range nuclear warheads on Cuban soil. Obviously the situation immediately becomes very critical to the point of fearing that there will no longer be a tomorrow. Kevin Costner in the role of John Fitzgerald Kennedy's personal advisor finds himself involved in a secret negotiation that will lead Bob Kennedy to mediate a plan with his Soviet counterpart that leads to a solution to the crisis after the island of Cuba was placed under "quarantine" by the American military forces. A film highly recommended for lovers of the contemporary historical genre but truly within everyone's reach with a very captivating and pleasant cut. To be seen!

Forza Horizon 5
(2021)

If the street is your track Forza Horizon is your game!
Another hit among the Microsoft exclusives, a title now in its 5th chapter and which has always grown against all odds. Yes, because Forza Orizon is absolutely the best car game that doesn't have a track vocation but rather an open world on 4 wheels that impresses with its graphics, fluidity and playability. The missions practically never end, between races on the road, track, paths, mud with ever-changing and customizable vehicles, the continuous supply of DLC with new modes and cars never tires.

Anyone who loves cars and hasn't tested it should absolutely do so as soon as possible, it could be worth a change of console, seeing is believing.

Avengers: Endgame
(2019)

An epic ending to an epic saga.
Avengers Endgame is the ending that the series deserved, a beautiful global battle between the forces of good and evil, a shame only for the fate of Iron Man (Tony Stark) but we know something needs to be left behind before continuing. The solution to the previous extinction was a bit complex but in the end our heroes managed to bring 50% of the missing back to life. From then on it is a showdown against Thanos and his followers. As I was saying, the final battle is exaggerated but fits well into this context and brings all the characters from the series onto the battlefield, without exception. Some hints of sadness arrive at the end but a high rating is confirmed for this film, certainly a memorable film for Marvel fans.

Staying Alive
(1983)

I'm going to make the world!
Tony Manero, John Travolta in his youth, an exceptional dancer and this film is based on his recognized abilities. A must between a love story and the eternal desire for social redemption that those born in the suburbs of New York have and have spent their whole lives passing greatness, luxury and success before them. The obsessive search for affirmation in the world of dance is the common thread on which the whole story evolves, steeped in betrayal, jealousy and failure.

In the end everything will work out well giving that romantic happy ending that everyone expects. One of the most successful films that have dance at their centre, thanks to the charisma and energy expressed by Travolta in impersonating the part. If you haven't seen it, watch it, you won't regret it.

Rocky
(1976)

The legend... ROCKY
Sylvester Stallone at his best, an easy but exciting plot, a controversial and borderline character. This is the recipe that makes Rocky one of the most watched, famous and appreciated films of all time. As I often say for masterpieces, raise your hand if you've never seen Rocky, look around you won't find anyone. A semi-desperate Italian boxer who scrapes by on fake jobs, in a squalid house with 2 turtles for company, will find himself facing the world heavyweight champion in Philadelphia in front of his people. Well, a sort of male Cinderella, a dream that comes true and that will change the life of both the character and the interpreter Sly forever. There's also boxing but that's marginal... Top film!

Black Hawk Down
(2001)

The real war in Somalia!
Mogadisho is the center of this film, and the real event linked to the shooting down of the Black Hawk helicopter is its plot.

This photography and filming film captures the idea of modern urban warfare like never before. Knowing that the scenes seen in the film reflect reality is truly dismaying and opens your eyes to an African reality that we have often only heard about but which fortunately most of us have not seen and will never see.

Helicopters, tanks, assault rifles, RPGs, and a hail of bullets for almost the entire duration of the film do not give the viewer any respite, instilling a sense of encirclement as it really was in the story. A very respectable cast gives further shine to the performances and, as is known, critics will not be slow to celebrate its success. Unmissable.

The Last Dance
(2020)

The best sportsman of all time. MJ23
And this comes from someone who at that time didn't want to align himself with the masses and sided with the underdogs. But jokes aside, we are faced with the series that celebrates the best athlete of all time, there is nothing for anyone, what MJ did in the 90s is comparable to the Sistine Chapel, the representation of God on earth. It flows away without you even noticing, so pleasant for those who even partially experienced those years of basketball that you can't help but see. The story of a man before an athlete who left his mark not only in the history of world basketball but also in the most profitable brand dedicated to a single person that we have ever seen. The series describes his last season and not only with all the sporting and psychological implications, showing how a true documentary can shed light on the champion on and off the pitch. Absolutely unmissable for fans of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

NBA 2K24
(2023)

I LOVE THIS GAME
Copy and paste of the 2K23 review... I honestly don't understand the criticisms of this game, it's simply the best basketball game on the market, period. If you want to have fun shooting hoops, what other game would you buy? There aren't any, at least not up to par. Playing against the CPU is truly a pleasure for fluidity, realism and simulation, some problems come with multi where the shooting dynamics changes becoming really complicated and leading to some matchmaking limits. But overall there is nothing else to say, try it and evaluate for yourself, if you like basketball you really can't do without it alone or with friends. Seeing is believing !

Pro Evolution Soccer 3
(2003)

Football in your room
This Pro evolution Soccer is particularly close to my heart because, even though it has a referee on the cover, it is probably the football video game that has most marked the history of this genre and which launched the Konami product into the world of virtual football, overwhelmingly taking first place. In fact, for the first time, the movements and physiognomy truly followed the main players, and the gameplay for the time was fluid and pleasant. A real craze for PES was born, so much so that tournaments between friends and reunions were set up everywhere for recreational purposes. It was the beginning of the golden era of football on consoles, which sadly ended, as we know, fifteen years later. But PES will always remain PES, nothing else needed to be said.

Per un pugno di dollari
(1964)

Spaghetti western, a myth is born.
Sergio Leone forcefully enters and literally gives a push to Hollywood's absolute dominion of film production, and what a push! Yes, because if we try to ask around what the best-known Wild West film is, they won't say exactly that, "A Fistful of Dollars". A true stroke of genius from the Italian director who transforms the Sicilian scene into the old west and presents to the world what will become one of the best and most awarded actors/directors in the history of cinema, Clint Eastwood. The ability to make the scenography credible is unique, the director's shots and timing are masterful. A true masterpiece of his kind thanks also and above all to the masterful soundtracks of maestro Ennio Morricone, a highly esteemed and highly awarded genius of music and cinema. Italian cinema at its best, unmissable!

Amici miei
(1975)

Friendship first of all!
Ah well now I'm having fun! Reviewing AMICI MIEI is like diving into a tub of champagne after just getting drunk, there are so many things that come back to your memory and make you smile that it would be enough to list them. But I won't do this, I will instead say something more significant for us Italians, this film (and its trilogy) is and will always be the best comedy produced in Italy. Point! He expressed in the most true and realistic way a cross-section of the best way of experiencing friendship in the Sixties/Seventies, a true, sincere, inter-class friendship, I would dare say almost a brotherhood. There are truly irresistible, contagious hints of irony, which we would all have liked or tried to make fun of like Count Mascetti played by a splendid Ugo Tognazzi, or to pose as the professor. Sassaroli (Adolfo Celi), or why not fall in love like the architect Melandri (Gastone Moschin), manage a bar like Perozzi (Duillio Del Prete and Renzo Montagnani) and go on "escapes" like Perozzi (Philippe Noiret). How beautiful, what a pleasure, how many memories... a cult film, authentic inspiration for entire generations! Masterpiece by Mario Monicelli.

Starfield
(2023)

The boundless space...
Never before has a video game been able to give that sense of depth that space as a starfield can give. I'll say it right away for the most demanding, this is not a game that is worth its high expectations but it is so vast, complex and original that it is still worth a high rating and a purchase. Unfortunately, a fluctuating frame rate and 30fps resolution have weakened Starfield to the point of making some define it as a big disappointment, but that's not the case. Bethesda certainly promised something unattainable which was not achieved but the production remains solid, original and well studied, with an exaggerated amount of things to do and secondary missions to discover. Not excellent but certainly excellent, worth trying!

Jaws
(1975)

The shark... nothing else.
As happened in certain films such as the Exorcist and very few others, after this film representation the term Shark took on a new image, a new stereotype, a new cliché, unfortunately not pleasant for the great white. It cannot be denied that when we think of the white shark the first or one of the very first images that come to mind is that of the film. Spielberg has hit the mark once again, with a wealth of awards and recognitions that are all deserved, there's no doubt about it, the pathos with which we observed this screening is certainly unforgettable. The game of special effects mixed with shots framed by a soundtrack that is nothing short of epic in the history of cinema have made Jaws a cult film, seen and re-watched by several generations, always with the same atmosphere despite the special effects being nothing short of artisanal compared to to those of today. One of the masterpieces of cinema.

The Equalizer
(2014)

The vigilante Denzel never disappoints!
Here is the usual Denzel Washington taking charge of a character, of a discreet but not too refined plot and making it a semi-masterpiece, certainly an engaging and adrenaline-filled film. The events that revolve around Robert McCall (Denzel) are full of violence, exploitation and crime destined to crash against this ex-military man with absolutely unique abilities. The double register on which the film flows sees a person with kind and refined manners transform into a ruthless and infallible killer determined to help those in need, in this case a young prostitute. The characterization of the "bad guys" contrasted by Robert's exploits makes the film truly exciting and non-trivial even if, as I was saying, the plot is not the most original. I liked it a lot and as often happens, the first in the series is preferable to the sequels, which are pleasant but predictable. Great movie, great character.

The Green Mile
(1999)

A tale from death row.
The Green Mile is a fairy tale that tells of the ability to do good and to be influenced by it beyond what the general context expresses. The demonstration of how even in an extreme situation you can leave room for goodness that will overwhelm everyone for better or for worse. A film that flows pleasantly between ironic and grotesque situations, alternating with moments of pure cruelty. It will be pleasing to see how good ultimately triumphs over evil while leaving behind a trail of injustice obscured from the sight of blind men. Highly recommended for all age groups and for lovers of fairy tales in general.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
(1982)

Home phone...
When I saw this film I was 9 years old. Probably the first film I watched at the cinema, certainly the first I remember and to which I am attached. R. T. It was a heart-stopping experience for everyone, young and old, a true fairy tale that involved and moved the whole world, rightly awarded and recognised, a triumph for Spielberg. The values expressed in this film were and are powerful and transcend the spatial nature of the subject. A manifesto to friendship, generosity and all those feelings that populate children before they are "corrupted" by adulthood. A legendary film that all children should see at least once in their lives. A masterpiece!

Dr. No
(1962)

Bond... James Bond.
And who doesn't know the most famous secret agent in the world? Nobody! And who doesn't know the actor who masterfully first played the role? Nobody! Sean Connery and his character made cinema history! Thousands of films after 007 will have been inspired by him, alternating different fortunes but Bond remains the undisputed number one of every era. It becomes difficult to make an original review of this saga, because "License to Kill" will only be the first of about thirty films made about the British secret agent. Here too, as in all cult films, there are jokes that have become commonly used and features inextricably linked to the character, such as the Aston Martin car for everyone, 007's car or the Walther PPK, Bond's gun. In itself the plot was not the most ingenious or complex but it created a dress that fit Connery so perfectly that it made him an authentic idol for entire generations, as well as one of the most internationally appreciated actors of all time. Legendary film!

American Gangster
(2007)

New York and its dark side...
In the post-war years, the most beautiful and controversial city in the world experienced all the evils that characterize large metropolises but, as in its style, amplified the results. Drugs, delinquency, corruption all masterfully represented in this film by Ridley Scott and with the certification authenticated by two names such as Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe. The two share the scene equally, one representing the ambitious and shy crime boss and the other an incorruptible policeman from New Jersey. Drugs in the background are the main business that dominates the scene and the way in which Ftrank Lucas (Denzel) obtains fictional drugs is a reality specific to those years during the conflict in Vietnam. The code of honor respected by the tough gangster clashes with the noisy competition and represents the ferocious desire for redemption of the black society of that era. On the other hand, the picture of absolute corruption of the police forces makes Richie (Russel) a stubborn and incorruptible white fly who will prevail in the end. A film not to be missed, among the best of its genre.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
(2004)

Snake's epic continues.
Third chapter of the series and third masterpiece of Hideo Kojima, probably the highest point reached in the series with a variety of characters, new actions and in-game situations like never seen before. It may not have the wow effect of the first Metal Gear as it was all unexplored territory and everything was a surprise, but certainly everything is proposed with new polish and creativity.

The plot thickens, the events intertwine, leaving room for future chapters with great curiosity. The Snake-eating Solid Snake seen in Metal Gears is probably the most "strong" of the entire series, at the height of his strength and fighting capabilities. The opponents are tough and always well characterised, in short, an experience truly not to be missed and we will soon also have a next-gen version of it.
