Karen Pirie
(2022)

Horrible Lead Character
I don't know if the blame is with the actress of the way the character was written, but Karen Pirie is extremely unlikable. She's too young, arrogant and annoying to be the lead character. Karen appears distracted when speaking with others, in important meetings with her superiors, or when interviewing a potential suspect, she stares off in space. The actress might be going for quirky but instead the character just comes off as a bit bizarre.

Recasting the lead would have helped this show. That and a new sound engineer. We too resorted to closed-captioning to understand the dialogue that was drowned out by the music.

The Christmas Train
(2017)

Love Boat on a Train
This movie really is The Love Boat on a train, but at least Love Boat's endings were silly happy, this one falls flat.

Like The Love Boat, there are familiar faces and big name stars -- Danny Glover, Kimberly Williams, Dermot Mulroney. Also like Love Boat there is amateurish acting, dialogue and unbelievable sets.

Kimberly Williams, Danny Glover and the actresses who portray the fortune teller and train conductor (I think that was her job) all do a fine job. Dermot Mulroney was stiff and bland, the recently widowed man, the former train employee and the young couple were pretty awful and Joan Cusack was horrid (every scene she's in she is twisting her mouth around in the most unflattering way, to say it was distracting is an understatement). Oh, and this train even has their version of Isaac the bartender.

As for the sets, this is the most unrealistic train I've ever seen, the private cars are more spacious than something from a 1950's movie. And has anyone involved in this movie ever been to the Amtrak station in Chicago?! Not to mention that tent party on Christmas Eve in a park across from the station? I know this is fantasy but that was really stretching it.

But wait, it gets worse. The twist at the end left us commenting -- what a waste of time!

DCI Banks
(2010)

Unlikable Leads
The stories are fairly interesting, quality cast and guest stars but two the least likable stars I've ever seen. I hated DS Annie Cabbot (Andrea Lowe) from the get-go and she became more insufferable with each passing episode. DCI Banks (Stephen Tompkinson) was tolerable until Season 2, especially his initial reaction to DI Helen Morton (Caroline Catz). I do like Caroline Catz, enjoyed her work in both 'Doc Martin' and 'Murder in Suburbia', but Tompkinson is a jackass in half the episodes I watched and Lowe is even worse. I gave up on this series halfway through, didn't see the point of watching a show where I hated the lead characters.

While the City Sleeps
(1956)

Uneven Tone Undermines Movie
Great cast and an interesting premise of the three execs vying for newly created top job by solving and profiting from a rash of serial killings. The flaw with the movie is the character Nancy.

I don't know if the fault is with the actress or the way her character is written but "Nancy" feels like she has been dropped into the movie from a Doris Day film. She even looks like a tiny version of Doris Day. Her playful dialogue with Dana Andrews is completely "off" for this film and their scenes really throw the movie out of sync. Nancy belongs in a romantic comedy. She does not belong in a drama about the media and what the various players will do to get ahead.

Safe
(2018)

Two episodes too long
It's not bad, it's just not as good as it could have been. Too much filler in this mini-series and an uneven cast.

Having watched other Harlan Coben mini-series I knew to expect frequent flashbacks and subplots but I did not expect to see some scenes replayed in almost every episode (the party scene for one). Without all the needless padding, this could have been an entertaining 6-episode mini-series, instead it was drawn-out to the point where I didn't care who did what.

As for the cast, I don't know if the fault is with the director or the actors but most of them were devoid of real emotions, it was as if they thought they were in a zombie movie. Maybe they were going for mysterious or sinister, but they came off as semi-comatose. There were exceptions - the trio who portrayed the Marshall family were great as was Audrey Fleurot (Zoe).

Lucifer
(2016)

Skip Season 6
I'd rate the first two seasons of 'Lucifer' a 9 or 10. Seasons 3, 4 and 5 were a bit inconsistent but the show was still one of my favorites and Season 5's 'Is This Really How It's Going To End?!' is absolutely phenomenal. Season 6 is awful! The actors look bored, like they're just going thru the motions. No energy, no humor and no point to most of the episodes in Season 6.

While watching the final season I kept wondering if there was an entirely new writing staff, one that hadn't watched the previous seasons. It's one long boring goodbye with a horrid time-travel storyline. The show had been fun, and funny, but there are no laughs in this season, just a long slog to the end.

Lucifer: My Best Fiend's Wedding
(2021)
Episode 7, Season 6

Another Lecture
Another lecture and another episode that I would recommend fast forwarding through. The only scene worth watching is Ella at the wedding reception.

The theme of this episode is an eye-rolling lecture on "toxic masculinity" featuring a rather bland and not very masculine Adam along with Maze going over the same 'I'm not worthy of love' territory that she's been through and had seemingly resolved.

It's hard to believe that this is the same show that gave us the powerful 'Is This Really How It's Going To End?!' episode in Season 5. This season on the other hand has featured back to back, cliché ridden lecture episodes.

If you skip 'A Lot Dirtier' and this wedding episode, you won't have missed anything important to the overall storyline or character development.

Lucifer: A Lot Dirtier Than That
(2021)
Episode 6, Season 6

After School Special
This episode felt like an After School Special - but worse because with those old TV movies, you knew "important message" would be coming.

I didn't expect an hour lecture on racist cops from a comedy, a comedy that for the last 5 years has portrayed the LAPD, for the most part, as decent people doing a difficult job. Now we're to believe that there isn't just one bad cop, the racist Amenadiel encountered in a previous episode, it's an entire conspiracy of racist cops going all the way up the chain of command. Seriously?

And if being lectured wasn't bad enough (and it was), the other storylines came to a halt with this episode. I want to know what will happen next with Dan, will Ella put all the pieces together, how is Chloe explain to Trixie who Rory is.

Inspector Morse: Service of All the Dead
(1987)
Episode 3, Season 1

Horrid Episode
My mother used to watch Morse on PBS because she liked the setting and "that nice man Lewis", but she did not like Morse. After watching the first three episodes of this series on BritBox, I agree with her assessment.

Morse appears to be perpetually annoyed that he has to do his job, is needlessly rude to Lewis and worst of all, when it comes to female witnesses and/or suspects, he behaves like a stalker. His behavior towards the female lead in this episode was highly inappropriate. And that's before he commits perjury on her behalf.

As for the storyline, there are numerous murders but no sense of urgency from Morse. He doesn't even solve the mystery; he just prevents the final murder in the killer's scheme.

And the "clever" filming is amateurish -- too many shots of characters in mirrors, reflections of windows, etc. Looks like the work of a first year film student from the '60s.

Season 1, and especially this episode, were a huge disappointment.

Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators
(2018)

Shakespeare & Sebastian
If this show was Shakespeare & Sebastian, I would rate it a 9 or 10. Jo Joyner (Luella Shakespeare) and Patrick McBride (Sebastian) are a delight to watch. They are two of the most likable characters on TV. It's easy to overlook the silliness of the scripts because Luella and Sebastian always look like they're having so much fun.

However, the show is Shakespeare & Hathaway and Mark Benton's Frank Hathaway is the complete opposite of his costars. The character of Frank, or maybe it's the actor, appears to be perpetually bored and annoyed that he has to do any work. He looks and dresses like a slob, insults the clients and is in general, completely unlikable. Which is why I'm rating this series a 6 rather than a 9/10.

The Bay
(2019)

Enjoyed 2 out of 3 seasons
It is hard to rate 'The Bay' given that Season 3 feels like a completely different show. If 'The Bay' only had two seasons I would give it a rating of 8 or 9 out of 10. Good cast, location, complicated yet realistic storylines. However, without Morven Christie, 'The Bay' became just another bleak cop show.

I do not understand why they replaced the main character. She was the reason we watched this show. Sure, her kids could be a bit much but that was the point, Lisa's struggles with her work/life balance. The replacement is a fine actress, but I just wasn't interested in her or the story in season 3.

Hawaiian Eye
(1959)

Show Had Potential But ...
The first season was fairly interesting, pretty basic scripts and awful backlot sets but the guest stars were usually pretty good. Plus, Robert Conrad is gorgeous, Connie Stevens is adorable and Poncie Ponce is a real find.

That's the good, now for the bad.

Anthony Eisley (Tracy Steele) is an adequate actor but a bit bland. Grant Williams is dull and talentless. Then the show really sank in the final season with the addition of Troy Donahue, he's a horrid actor. I'm stunned to learn he was once a teen idol.

Monte Walsh
(2003)

Boring
I never saw the original so I'm not comparing Tom Selleck's performance to Lee Marvin's but Selleck seemed all wrong for this movie. I've enjoyed him in other Westerns but in this movie he came across as an arrogant jerk. I never felt the connection he supposedly had with his friend or his lady friend (I've forgotten the character's names).

As for the story, there isn't much of one. Cowboy way of life is coming to an end but based on these characters, it's ending with a shrug rather than worry or sorrow.

On the positive -- beautiful location, good soundtrack and good cast who unfortunately weren't given much of a script.

Before We Die
(2021)

A Bit Boring
I like moody, slow-paced mysteries but 'Before We Die' isn't slow-paced, it's just awkwardly slow. There were several scenes with long pauses, not dramatic pauses but pauses that gave the impression that no one knew who has the next line. And the younger members of the crime family looked like they went to Soap Opera Acting 101 - the least subtle glances at enemies and/or love interests.

The other negative, the filming location. Based on some of the buildings I thought the story was supposed to be taking place somewhere other then the UK and the audience was to ignore the fact the cast was speaking English (like Kenneth Branagh's Wallander). Really couldn't figure this out until I read some reviews after watching the first two episodes.

Sister Boniface Mysteries
(2022)

Painfully Silly
I enjoy "cozy" mysteries and don't expect much realism from them but I do expect clever plots and interesting characters. You won't find that with Sister Boniface Mysteries.

Lorna Watson speaks too quickly, in too high pitched of a voice and pushes her glasses up her nose in every other shot. I assume she's going for quirky but she's just irritating. The immigrant cop, female cop and the cop who likes the reporter are fine but we don't spend much time with them. The actresses portraying the other nuns and each week's guest stars are embarrassingly bad. Though given the poor scripts this might be the best they can do.

Murder in Provence
(2022)

Disappointment
I was looking forward to watching this show when BritBox added it but wow, what a disappointment.

I thought this was going to be about a retired British couple living in France who end up solving mysteries. If I'd known it was a British and American, Keala Settle, cast pretending to be French my expectations would have been lower.

As for what the show is rather than isn't, it's boring. The conversations between Antoine and Marine are stiff and they seem more like friendly coworkers than a loving couple. The characters on the show have various British accents, which makes it difficult for the viewer to imagine they're supposed to be French. Then there are the pointless, snide comments about Americans, isn't that the show's target audience? It is a BritBox original.

All in all, other than attractive scenery, this show has nothing to offer.

Lost in Space
(2018)

Too Much Family Drama, Not Enough Space Exploration
We loved the first season, great special effects and an interesting premise. But the second season is an absolute bore. Season 1 focuses on life in space and Will's robot (is it good or evil). With Season 2, the show became a dreary family drama. There was far too much time is spent on flashbacks of life on earth and their relationships with one another and not enough focus on where they were currently.

In Season 1 and 2, Penny is great, she's the only normal Robinson (the rest of them are either unbelievably intelligent or special) and Don West adds much needed humor but he's woefully underutilized.

The Coroner
(2015)

Nice Scenery, Terrible Show
Love the setting of this show but that's the only positive.

Lead actress, or maybe it's the character and not the actress, is painfully dull. She has no chemistry with anyone. Her daughter, mother and mother's boyfriend are ridiculous as are many of victims and suspects in each episode. It's as if the coroner is in a serious crime show and everyone else is in a slapstick comedy.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
(2016)

Too much CGI, not enough script
I'm not judging this movie against the Harry Potter series, just on its own and on its own, it's a boring mess of a movie. There's far too much time is spent on the CGI beasts and they're not that interesting nor are they original (the little green creature is a weak Groot ripoff).

The other big flaw in the movie is Eddie Redmayne, he's awful. He mumbles throughout the movie, his daft 'aw-shucks' routine is grating and he never seems to understand the seriousness of what's happening around him.

The positives are Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Colin Farrell. The true star of the movie (for me anyway), Dan Fogler.

Silent Witness: Schism: Part 2
(2006)
Episode 10, Season 10

Too Extreme
Other than Nikki and DCI Mumford, the characters in this episode were very annoying (Harry, the "spook", the mother at the medical board hearing) or flat out hateful (Claire, the pharma guys, Leo). Leo has never been my favorite and after what he did at the board hearing, I truly hate this character. As for the storylines, both were predictable, the only surprise being just how extreme the torture scenes were.

Kim's Convenience
(2016)

4 out of 5 Seasons are Pure Delight
For the first four season I loved watching the Lee family, Kimchee, Shannon, Gerald, Pastor Nina and everyone else in this delightful world. Then Season 5 arrived and it felt like a chore watching the show.

I really disliked Umma's storyline in Season 5. I watch comedy for an escape from the curves life can throw at you, not to be reminded of them. Janet's life was aimless, the rental car crew seemed lifeless, the entire season felt like everyone was just going thru the motions.

My recommendation: watch Season 1 - 4, skip Season 5.

Lightning Strikes Twice
(1951)

Worth Watching for Ruth Roman
This is a fair mystery with some good performances and one real clunker.

Richard Todd does a good job of keeping the viewer guessing -- did he or didn't he and if he didn't kill his wife, who is he protecting? I really enjoyed some of the supporting cast, especially Kathryn Givney and Zachary Scott. Ruth Roman was wonderful, she is the reason I stuck with this movie to the end. Mercedes McCambridge horrid performance is the reason I was tempted to turn it off before the conclusion. Her flat voice and her over-the-top acting brought every scene she's in to a screeching halt. She has fans on this site but for the life of me I can't understand why.

Battlestar Galactica
(2004)

As pointless as 'Lost'
Like 'Lost', Battlestar Galactica's beginning is thrilling. Also like 'Lost', by the end of the series I was bored, frustrated and hated the way the show ends.

The miniseries and Season 1 of Battlestar are top notch, worthy of a 10 star rating. We enjoyed Season 2 as well but the first half of Season 3 is a bit slow, second half absolutely boring (too much politics). I watched the next season in the hopes the show would improve. It didn't. In fact, Season 4 is worse.

The show spun out of control as soon as 4 of the "final 5" are revealed. From that point on there were too many episodes that felt like filler, too much talking and not enough action, too many deaths, too many "surprises" that aren't surprising at all. And the finale is even more disappointing than the 'Lost' finale, and for me, that's saying a lot.

Nashville
(2012)

Quickly Lost It's Way
Season 1 was fantastic, Season 2 less so, gave up during Season 3. I'd only recommend it for the music and for Juliette - she was never boring.

As for the music on the show, it's amazing. From the performances at the Blue Bird to the big showy numbers, they were all great. Unfortunately, after the first season there was less and less music and more soapy drama.

Bigger reason I lost interest, too many characters I didn't care for and no couples to root for. It's hard to get invested in a couple when in another episode or two they hook up with someone new. The frequency these characters fell in and out of love was ridiculous.

Bloodlines
(2010)

Too Short
Too much was left unexplained -- his full background, his motive, the other son mentioned right before the credits. Given the runtime of the movie, they could have easily expanded it to clear up some key points. When we finished watching, I looked this case up on Wikipedia to fill in the blanks left by the movie.
