Moonnam Pakkam
(1988)

Simple yet touching story
It would take a really tough person to watch this movie in entirety and not be moved to tears. Its a simple story of a grandfather, how the arrival of his grandson and friends, turns a sleepy house into a fun filled one. The title of the movie means "on the third (day)". This is another one of the genius Padmarajan's work. Unfortunate incidents happen and how traumatic it can be for an elderly person forms the main the theme. The directors excellence lies in the fact that he took a story that can be told in a single line and made a tear jerker out of it, and boy what a job he did! Thilakan as the grandfather is thoroughly believable and you cannot help feel sympathy for the person. The songs of this movie are also enjoyable

Dasharatham
(1989)

Ahead of its time
Dasharatham is a movie that was made far ahead of its time but was still appreciated well. Made in 1989, when the protagonist wants to have a child, he goes in for artificial insemination. In most movies in other Indian languages, some even as recent as 2002(Chori chori chupke chupke), whenever the heroine was not able to bear a child, the hero would have to sleep with another woman or something like that. This one is sans any melodrama and the climax too has been dealt with in a professional and believable manner. Its admirable that the director had the guts to make the movie at that time when this technology was not even that popular. Kudoos to him for presenting it in an excellent manner.
