Passage à l'acte
(1993)

Hilarious experimental piece
I had the pleasure of seeing this hard-to-get experimental film at the Tampere 35th Film Festival. Out of the 9 experimental films in that showing, this is definitely the one I enjoyed the most.

So, what is this movie? Approximately 10 seconds of American dining idyll stretched out to 12 minutes with the use of continuous, recurring repetition of tiny bits of film and sound. The simplest movement becomes a magical phenomenon of its own as it is repeated, reversed, repeated, reversed, to produce a stuttering and staggering effect that first puzzles and fascinates the viewer, then forces him to burst into uncontrollable laughter. Because as original and serious as the piece may be as art, it's also hilariously funny.

If you get the chance to see this title, do it. It'll be a film experience like none before, and you're guaranteed to enjoy it.

Mindhunters
(2004)

Simple and hollow
Some people enjoy simple mindless and unrefined entertainment, like Britney Spears and Renny Harlin's movies.

It doesn't matter if the script's ridiculous, or if the dialogue is corny. Hell, it's been years since Deep Blue Sea, I'm sure everyone is ready for another "trapped-and-being-killed-one-by-one" Renny Harlin suspense thriller. More LL cool J? Sure! Lots of illogical but cool and gory deaths? Sure!

This could have been made into a great movie. Unfortunately, some people like a bit more than trying to find out "whodunnit"? For me, after it was narrowed down to 3 people, the movie lost all its suspense. Now it was time for the compulsory end-fight and corny one-liners.

I was ready to accept that it might have actually turned out to be a good movie until I realized that there was no greater depth in the storyline. We are left with no real connection with any of the characters, or the killer. It felt like a waste of time, like listening to a long joke with no punchline. After the initial "whodunnit" suspense, there is nothing left. And I felt so stupid for not noticing it earlier.

I'm sure that's good enough for a lot of people. I guess I have high standards, but this movie was a mess.
