Wo de fu qin mu qin
(1999)

A sensational delight
This has to be one of the most rewarding, warm, and sweet films I've ever seen. There are not that many films that touch me in this kind of sentimental level. This movie is VERY sentimental, but it doesn't come off as manipultive, which is something that Zhang Yimou is clearly the master of.

Zhang Yimou does a great job as the director, as always. The cinematoaghy was brilliant. The music was inspiring.

Zhang Ziyi does a fantastic job in this film. The film couldn't be anymore simplistic, which can trouble some actors, but she was great. She will steal your heart, her facial expressions are very well done. She is in every sense of the word adorable in this film. Honglei Sun does what he is suppose to, he is not given much to do. Hao Zheng is laid back through out his scenes, but he didn't have alot to do either. Yulian Zhao was kinda annoying, but over all she did an ok job. The acting aspect was all about Zhang Ziyi in this film.

This movie is a heart-mover. Very beautifully made. Zhang Ziyi makes this film what it is. It has a simplistic story line, but involving. This movie will truely put a smile on your face, and make you very happy.

Yi ge dou bu neng shao
(1999)

The weakest of Yimou's work
I've seen all of master director: Zhang Yimou's work, and this is one of the two films of his that I didn't love. I love all his work passionately except Not One Less, 7/10 and Keep Cool, 8/10. All his other films get a 10/10 from me.

That's not to say I didn't like it. I was compelled throughout, but other problem with this film is that I thought it was a shameless rehash of the superior The Story of Qiu Ju with Gong Li. This also Yimou's most visually boring film next to Keep Cool, which atleast had a cool Wong Kar-wai, hand-held look to it. Another complaint of mine is that Zhang Yimou is good at being sentimental in his films without being manipultive, and thats one of the many things I love about his films. Not One Less was very manipultive.

This is not a great film, nor a very good film, just simply a good film. I did however LOVE Minzhi Wei's performance, so this movie is worth buying or renting.

Dung che sai duk
(1994)

WKW's underrated best film
The first time I saw this movie. I was REALLY confused. I still loved it though, but after a few viewings of this film I've grown to love it even more. This is undoubtably Wong Kar-wai's best work. Alot of people however hate this, but there is a good few who love this film, so it's a love it or hate it film.

The performances are all good. Leslie Cheung was brilliant as the cynical and bitter Ouyeng Feng. Tony Leung Chiu-wai was also great as The Blind Swordsman. Maggie Cheung's ten minutes torward the end is the most jaw-droppingly beautiful, yet haunting and sad scene ever. It is the best scene ever in a film, the film is worth it for that scene alone. Maggie Cheung is an actress you'll never forget, once you see this movie and the scene that she is in. The best performance is by Bridget Lin as Yin and Yang, who are really one person in one. I REALLY thought those were two different actresses playing those characters, amazing work by her.

The directing and cinematoaghy is off the hook. The images you see on screen are truely amazing and unforgetable. Wong Kar-wai does a brilliant job of putting this film together. This is one of my top ten favorite films.

Review:

10/10 The Japanese always make excellent films like Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Akira, and The Samurai trilogy. This is another excellent film. Japan is known for it's animated films. Now when Spirited Away hits wide release in the U.S, Japan will be known for this animated film, Spirited Away. This film is much better than any Disney film, which is saying a lot when you look at Disney's history. Ironically Disney has bought the U.S/European/Australian rights to this film, go figure.

I must say how very imaginative this film is and how colorful it is. The animation is brilliant as is the story and characters. You care you the lead character: Chiriro, which is hard to do in most other films. This will be a big film in the over the world

Rock, Paper, Scissors
(2000)

This did everything and a tad better than other films its genre
Plot: Ada and Arlene desire a man who speaks French to them. While at a restaurant they see a man named Julian who fits the description of the man they want. They both want to date him. They try doing rock, scissor, paper, but it doesn't work. They decide to switch every so often and who ever has sex with him gets Julian. Julian is lactose and tolerant and acts kinda goofy. Wacky situations that happen with in these 13 minutes so just watch it.

7/10

I usually don't like these types of movies. I however was impressed that they did in this film in 13 minutes. This movie has everything a full-length wacky romantic comedy would have except it's told in 13 minutes in this movie. This movie isn't very original either. Again there are so many full-length films that were in the same vein as this movie I am reviewing now, but those full-length films in the same vein of this film aren't funny. This has a few laughs in its short time.

The acting is very great. The 3 leads of the film are rather clumsy in their performances. But who cares about acting in a short, wacky romantic comedy. Though Ada and Arlene Tai aren't bad looking they just didn't cut it with their acting.

The directing was nothing special. May I remind you it's a short, wacky romantic comedy, So what do you expect?

The writing is better than the directing. Title cards and a few conversations, Nothing really big. It's better written than most films of its genre and kind.

Maybe if you want to get a few short laughs and be a tad amused in 13 minutes. Then go watch it

Swerve
(1995)

The best short film ever
Plot: A man who looks like suburban businessman is driving fast through a road and he suddenly swerves and his tire flattens. He pulls over and while fixing the tire, a man knocks him out. When this man wakes up he finds his car gone. This man walks in the road in nowhere, he finally stops at a café. Where he sees his car. He goes into the café and looks around and notices a man who just ran out of the café and into his car. The ending is some thing you should find out your self.

10/10

This is one of the best short films I have ever saw. It's very nihilistic. You have no idea what happens at the end. It's a real surprise and I won't tell you it. The acting by the lead is pretty good considering he has no lines. In fact there is almost no dialogue in this film, which I think is better that way. The directing is very good and is another great thing about this film. See it, you won't be disappointed.
